Experience staying in Europe's most sustainable floating neighbourhood, Schoonschip in the heart of Amsterdam. Just google 'Schoonschip Amsterdam' and you can read all about this amazing project. We offer our home to couples with or without children who want to experience this unique neighbourhood in one of Europe's most beautiful cities. The 3 level house is surrounded by water. You can have a swim or if you don't want to get wet, you can take one of our two canoes. A stay you won't forget!

The space
In the Johan van Hasseltkanaal, a side canal from the IJ river in the north of Amsterdam, lies a new floating neighbourhood called ‘Schoonschip’. Literally, Schoonschip can be translated as 'clean ship'.
The neighbourhood consists of homes for 46 households and a community center on 30 floating plots. Some of the plots hold a singel home for one household. Other plots, like the one we live on, holds two semi-detached homes, for two households to Iive in.
Schoonship has attracted a lot of media attention. News crews from Japan, Sweden, China, the USA and many more countries, have been here to film and interview the people that live here. The reason for that is the techniques we use which make Schoonschip the most sustainable neighbourhood in Europe. Just to name some of these special techniques:
- vacuum toilets (like in the airplane!) so we only flush with 1 litre of water instead of 6 litres
- water recycling shower (we only us 1 litre per minute instead of 15 litres per minute)
- solar panels generate electricity which is also saved in batteries if there is more energy generated than used. So no energy gets lost. We share the energy in the community with a smart grid software system
- and much more!
The great thing about the house is that it is surrounded by water. The 30 plots are connected to each other with a jetty/boardwalk. There are swimming stairs so you can have a swim and then get back on the jetty/boardwalk. This makes it such a great place to be in the summer! You really feel the outside but are in the middle of the city.
It is really a unique place and I would love for you to experience it!

My work: Freelance photographer
Speaks Dutch, English, French and Spanish
I consider myself lucky to live in one of the most beautiful cities of the world, together with my son Dylan and daughter Bo. After having lived in the center of Amsterdam for 18 years, we have made the move to a new part of the city, Amsterdam North. We have built a beautiful floating house in the Schoonschip neighbourhood, which is the most sustainable floating neighbourhood of Europe. We love to travel to far away places, South Africa being one of our favorite destinations. As soon as Dylan and Bo are old enough, we will teach them to snowboard, so they can join us on winter sport holidays. When I'm not traveling or enjoying free time with my family and/or friends, I work as a freelance photographer. I want to share my love for Amsterdam with the guests staying in our home. I hope that some time in our home will give you the feeling of having lived here, if only for a brief time.
