This quiet, rural retreat for four is nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains at 4000 feet between Banner Elk and Valle Crucis. The Cottage is "family friendly" for families with children 12 years and older. From here you can explore the many trails and waterfalls in the area or relax on the porch swing & watch the chickens play.

The space

"The Cottage" is located on 2 1/2 acres along with our house and the barn which includes "Bluebird's Barn" which is also on airbnb. It is suited for four which could be a small family, two couples, some girl friends off for a weekend and even just one couple. It can also handle a fifth guest on a cot. You will enter the Cottage by way of a big front porch that has a porch swing and plenty of wicker seating for relaxing and visiting. The living room and dining area are in a comfortably decorated very spacious room with a TV that is hooked to cable. Free WiFi is provided. The sunny kitchen is equipped with all you need for cooking and eating, a dishwasher, microwave, toaster and an old enamel topped breakfast table. There is a little back porch off the kitchen where the early morning sun shines and is a perfect place to drink your coffee. We provide you with organic herbs we dry, Karl's famous garlic powder that he grows and processes in small batches, salt and pepper and olive oil. There is also coffee, tea, cocoa, sugar, creamer and honey. A full bath is off the kitchen with towels for your use. At the top of the stairs is a spacious bedroom with hard wood floors and a king size bed. In one corner is a drafting table and some artist supplies if you feel so inclined to play around with them. There is also a wall covered with old art magazine pages and photos from the early 1900's up through the 60's and on up to present time. You may want to add something of yours there. Off the big bedroom is a little bedroom with two antique iron twin beds. All sheets and blankets and pillows are provided for you. If there is a fifth guest, we provide a cot with a cot mattress that is made up like a real bed. Down a little path off the kitchen porch is a private patio with a table and seating for four and a propane grill. Here you can enjoying grilling out and eating. As hosts on airbnb we want you to know that the rentals and the yard around them will always be clean and look nice, but the rest of the acreage is always a work in progress. Being older now it is hard to keep everything pristine, so don't expect it to be. We have free range chickens to entertain you along with a quiet and peaceful place where you can recharge your batteries or use as a base to explore the High Country. From this country setting you can travel one of the NC Scenic Byways several miles to fine restaurants, golf courses, trout fishing, horseback riding, hiking trails and waterfalls. It is also close to parks, shopping including antiques, locally made arts and crafts, the Old Mast Store, an alpaca farm and even a local brewery. So come, bring your clothes and food and enjoy mountain living at 4000 feet. Such a deal! NOTE: We only rent to people who have a completed profile, which includes a picture. Airbnb is a community and we want to know you from your profile like we hope you now know us from our profile and listing.

The cottage was very cozy and fully stocked. Claudia was great and gave us helpful information. We were only a few miles away from downtown Banner elk and it was super quaint, great food and the people were very friendly!!

We stayed sadly only for one night. Which was not long enough. The Cottage is the perfect place to relax and have a great time. We really enjoyed the art supplies. A nice touch was having items like shampoo, soap, and even face wipes, that you may have forgotten, supplied. Even though we didn't have a chance to eat the eggs, they were a sweet gesture. Being from the south myself, Claudia and Karl showed true southern hospitality.

We really enjoyed our stay at The Cottage. It was both spacious and cozy, and there were so many things that made it special: the freshly laid eggs from the 14 gorgeous chickens (who also provided excellent company); the cheerful, cozy but well appointed kitchen; the art supplies; the warm welcome from Claudia and Karl. The location is great for exploring the beautiful mountains in the area, and we would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking for a perfect perch in the mountains.

For anyone who just wants to relax in a tranquil environment, this is the place to be. I chose the cottage because I wanted a place that wasn't too remote and had no more than a 3-hr drive in it for me. The cottage fitted the bill exactly. For those who want trails right outside the doorstep, this site may not be quite what they're looking for, but the surrounding attractions and walks are no more than a short pleasant drive away. The cottage is very well equipped and lacks only a fireplace if you were to consider a winter trip and like a log fire. For any other time of the year it wouldn't matter at all (as it didn't in our case - we spent most of our time on one of the two porches, in the yard at the fire-pit, or barbecuing at suppertime in the nicest possible surroundings.)

My husband and I live on 2 1/2 acres in the mountains of North Carolina. Karl is a retired timber framer, an organic gardener, a wood turner, 100% disabled vet, and known far and wide for his famous organic garlic powder. I am an artist with a degree in art education and a masters in special ed working with preschool children. I loved working in glass and now I make jewelry, quilt, work with fibers and love to do a little herb gardening. We live with free range chickens, and one big yellow tabby cat that rules the place. We grow many varieties of garlic along with some organic herbs, a few veggies and fruits. Our gardens aren't as big as they used to be. I guess that has something to do with adding up all those birthdays! We have two rentals with airbnb on our property: Bluebird's Barn and the Cottage. Part of the winter we spend at Hunting Island, SC and are Lighthouse Keepers there for the state park. Our favorite pass time in the winter is to wander around in our little motor home making plans as we go.
