Where you’ll be

Au Sable Forks, New York, United States

Hiking, biking, Skiing and the best fly fishing in the state. less than 30 minute drive from most of the ADK high peaks, and about an hour to the famous Wild Discovery Center. Sit by the wood stove enjoy a drink, or relax in the back yard by the camp fire and roast some marshmallows or hot dogs. At night the stars come out and you can grab a blanket lie down on the grass as a family and star gaze. Located on a quiet, private, dead end road, but less than 2 miles to the local Stewart's gas station and Tops Market. If shopping is more your thing, come visit the quaint shops of downtown Lake Placid, the Olympic museum and "Herb Brooks" 1980 ice hockey arena. You can also visit the Adirondack Museum, or Saranac Lake or drive up to the top of Whiteface mountain in the summer.

As we transition from summer to winter, we wanted to provide a word of caution to all our guests and include a special note about winter hiking and camping: The weather in the high peaks can be -20 or more, with sustained winds of 40, 50 even 60 miles per hour and can change ata moments notice. The ASRC weather station on the summit of Whiteface has recorded wind speeds well in excess of 100 MPH. Weather above the tree line especially at altitude can be 10-20 degrees colder than at the trail head parking area. Snow, Sleet, and freezing rain can occur at any time of the year.

To prevent "postholing" NYS DEC regulations mandate that snowshoes or cross country skis be used on all trails if the snow depth is 8" or greater. Bear canisters are required between April 1 and November 30. Fines for non-compliance for either of these violations can be up to $250. Losing your food to a bear or other animal can have dangerous consequences.

The high peaks have received significant snow fall as early as October and as late as July on many of the summits. If you are going to attempt to summit, dress accodringly, check the weather, and be prepared.

Look up and carry the "10 essentials". Have proper equipment to store food to prevent black bears and other animals from poaching your stuff. For a full list of hiking and back country camping regulations please visit the NYS DEC website, or look up "high peaks camping and hiking". Our family are experienced ourdoorspeople and have been recreating in the high peaks for over 35 years, feel free to tap into our knowledge base to assist you with trip planning.
