This was our first experience of using Airbnb as we normally stay in Hotels on our travels. I visited Rosedale on the first day of the holiday so I would get an idea on its location, all looked good on the quick tour I had with Karen apart from a couple of areas that looked like …
Response from Tom & Karen:
Golly—our first less-than-positive review! We’re sorry to hear that you had some issues with Rosedale and are in contact with our staff on the island to address some of them. Before we hear back from them, however, I will just make a few points. When we invited you over to the house in the week prior to your stay at Rosedale, we took the time to give you a fairly thorough tour and were very receptive to any concerns you raised at the time so we’re puzzled as to why you did not point out the ‘couple of areas that looked like they hadn’t been cleaned’ as we would have addressed those prior to your stay. We’re sorry we forgot to mention about the neighbourhood dogs—the preferred security measure for most Bajan households it seems. Mea culpa; we became used to them years ago and no longer notice the occasional bark. We will certainly put a note about this on the listing, warning that Rosedale is in a residential neighbourhood with individual properties around it (and not a hotel or tourist complex with security patrols etc.). We will arrange to have any thorny plants replaced with a thorn-free species. But we will also mention on the listing that Rosedale’s is a tropical garden and that we cannot be held responsible for any adverse affects arising from contact with plants therein—there may be berries or stingers as well as insects that could harm an unsupervised child. We are very sorry to hear that one of the upstairs bathrooms did not work. We are investigating why our housekeeper might have stated that it “had been like that for a while” as we were unaware of this before your stay and the Managing Agent, had he been aware of the problem, would most certainly have addressed it. We would be happy to negotiate a partial refund for the lack of this facility and are making every effort to ensure it is repaired forthwith. Similarly, we are looking into your statement that beds were not made up as this is one of our housekeeper’s daily tasks and she’s always performed it well. She usually waits until all guests have arrived downstairs each morning before venturing up to the bedrooms for modesty’s sake and, when we have more information, we’ll look into how to improve communications on this matter. Similarly, all surfaces are dusted daily—and bathrooms cleaned—and we would welcome more information from you (either in a private message or on this thread) about deficiencies in these areas. Dust is a constant problem in the West Indies, due to the trade winds (I know from my own experience that, within an hour of cleaning any surface, it will be gritty again) and the only way to combat it, really, would be to close up the house and air-condition it round the clock. In a beautiful old colonial house, this would of course be madness. We are aware that some our bedlinen is less than brand new but none of it is threadbare and none older than a year or two. Similarly, the brightly-coloured towels are thick and absorbent and with no fraying edges. If you felt that the linen in any particular room was sub-standard please let us know but please also understand that we are a private home rental and not a hotel. We were sleeping on those sheets and using those towels the week before your stay and, in fact, reviewed all the linen and purchased some replacements during our stay. We make no mention of an alarm system on our listing and this is not on offer. We’re not sure, therefore, why you enquired about this from our managing agent. You don’t state whether you left a message for him when you ‘tried to contact’ him (he’s assiduous in returning calls) and he would certainly have addressed many of your complaints had you done so. Likewise, we do not state the housekeeper’s hours as these are necessarily flexible. For the record, our housekeeper is at the property daily from 8am until early afternoon on each weekday (excluding Bank Holidays) during any rental. As stated earlier, however, we are looking into the issues of cleanliness and bed-making you raised and hope to get back to you soon regarding these. Kind regards Karen and Tom Horan
