Our home is a converted barn with huge exposed oak beams in Hawkswick - a small, hidden gem in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Listen to the river and owls at night, then in the morning take the footpath over the fell to Kettlewell.

The space

The converted barn (semi-detached - the farmhouse beside it is not ours!) is our home where we live and we are delighted to share it with our guests - we have 3 spare bedrooms. Our village has stunning scenery and a lack of tourists. Perfect for walking and cycling and a great base for exploring the unique, unspoiled countryside of the dales or the cultural and historic wealth of Yorkshire.

Guest access

An en-suite bedroom; 2 extra bedrooms with a private bathroom available for family or friends, one with double bed, the other with twin beds; a warm, farmhouse-style kitchen with breakfast provided (it will either be cereals and toast put out for you or a cooked breakfast, dependent on whether or not we're around) and other meals available on request; a comfortable living room with log stove, music and TV; Wi-Fi internet; a lovely garden to sit in. Be warned - we do have some stone steps and some creaky floorboards. If you like things to be ultra-quiet you may need some earplugs, although we do tiptoe about the place when we have guests.

Interaction with guests

As much as we are able and they would like.

Other things to note

Great for country lovers and those who want to get away from it all - far from the madding crowd.

Jonathan & Sonia are the perfect hosts who live in a wonderful barn conversion set in a jaw-droppingly beautiful part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. On arrival you will be impressed by the setting of their barn - nestled at the foot of Hawkswick Moor, towards the bottom of Littondale with the River Skirfare flowing close by. You immediately feel relaxed and comfortable in Jonathan and Sonia's company - they strike that careful (and difficult) balance of providing everything you need - tea, coffee, milk, directions to the pub or good conversation, whilst giving you the freedom to make their home, your home, for the duration of your stay. We stayed in two rooms - a double room with excellent en suite facilities and a twin room and use of the house bathroom which was good. When we returned home each day, the house was warm - loads of hot water for showers, baths. The fridge is situated in the hallway which means you don't have to disturb anyone if you want to make a hot drink in your room and need fresh milk. You also get a couple of nice chocolate bars in your room :) On both days we enjoyed possibly the best breakfast I have experienced at any hotel or B&B - fresh porridge, homemade honey, bacon, sausage, scrambled egg, fresh homemade bread/toast, jams, marmalades......(all homemade) and all washed down with fresh coffee or your choice of tea. Our bikes were kept safe in an outbuilding which can be locked if necessary. The barn has a nice lounge with wood burner where guests can relax, read, watch tv.... Phone signal is limited but wifi is provided. All in all a great weekend of cycling which was further elevated by the hospitality we received from Jonathan & Sonia. Quality and value - quite rare these days! We are going back, you should go too....you will not be disappointed.

Thanks so much Jonathan and Sonia for being such wonderful, helpful, welcoming hosts into your beautiful, unique home. We felt so welcome and relaxed as soon as we arrived after a long drive, (the emails with directions were so helpful!). We loved our stay and were sorry it was so brief as we arrived late and got up early for our Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge (completed in just over 12 hours but we are now a bit tired and achy). Particular thanks for letting us heat up our chilli and make our sandwiches for our trek. The breakfast was delicious with home made bread, granola, preserves, and dozens of teas to choose from. I really loved the absolute quiet, and the scenery we finally saw in the morning and hope to be back again!

I thoroughly enjoyed staying in Jonathan and Sonia's lovely rural home, far from the tourist hordes. They are very experienced and welcoming hosts. The room was well equipped and very private and comfortable, and breakfast was excellent. A memorable airbnb experience!

Jonathan and Sonia have a beautiful house in a small picturesque village. Jonathan welcomed us warmly with tea and slice. He was even making granola for breakfast! The room was clean and had everything we needed and it was wonderful having breakfast provided. We could even pick our own currents and gooseberries from the garden! Jonathan and Sonia are wonderful hosts who made us feel at home - especially our three-year-old daughter who Jonathan took the time to get to know. A great place to visit!

Jonathan & Sonia User ProfileJonathan & Sonia is a superhost.

My wife Sonia and I live in a converted barn in a delightful, small village in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. I teach English as a foreign language and we provide English immersion courses, with young people and adults coming from all over the world to stay with us. If you are coming from abroad and fancy an English immersion course we can also provide that. We are also members of HOST UK and like to give hospitality to international students staying in English universities.

Sonia is a Care Worker and works in a care home that specialises in dementia care. One day it would be good to provide an airbnb break for someone with a partner or parent with dementia - I have also worked as a Social Therapist on a dementia unit, so we are both experienced in that area.

We both love gardening and cooking with our organic vegetables. We can provide a range of breakfasts, from porridge to grapefruit and pancakes to the traditional full English - all cooked in our Aga. We also like to bake bread and make our own marmalade and jams. We keep bees, so there is also our honey on offer - and for the brave you can sample our home-made wine.

We like reading, watching the BBC and films, walking and travelling. Both our children are now in their twenties and living in London, but do come back up north from time to time - you might even be lucky enough to meet them (they're great fun). For cyclists we are right beside the 2014 Tour de France route. For walkers we are near both the Pennine Way and the Dales Way. There are lots of lovely local walks - go along the river to the pub at Arncliffe or over the fell to the lovely village of Kettlewell (host to the world-famous Scarecrow Festival). Within an hour's drive of where we live there are many places to visit. The idyllic Dales village of Grassington is a 10 minute drive away and our local market town of Skipton (judged by the Sunday Times in 2014 as the best place to live in Britain) is only 14 miles away. If you want to travel by train we can collect you from Skipton station. We are members of HHA (Historic Houses Association) and Newby Hall and Ripley Castle are nearby - as are Bolton Abbey and Fountains Abbey.

So if you love nature and want some peace, tranquillity, fresh air and wonderful countryside then do visit us. We'd be delighted to meet you.
