The Old Kennel is set in the High Weald AONB. This delightful self contained cottage is set next to and shares a drive with the farmhouse. The charm here is the peace and tranquillity of the countryside surroundings on our working beef farm. The cottage itself is set apart from the workings of the farm to allow your quiet enjoyment. With glorious morning to early evening sun and the garden benefits also from shade if needed. The space is ideal for a couple or two adults with 2 children.

The space
The cottage is beamed and very charming in this respect. We have tried to keep all features exposed even when this means one has to duck a little sometimes. The accommodation is made up of one double bedroom, well equipped kitchen / sitting room, marble shower room and a mezzanine sleeping space suitable for 2 older children (access via steep bunk type ladder.) The sofa in the sitting room is also a double sofa bed. Underfloor heating throughout makes for a very cosy stay. Wifi, gas BBQ & bike storage also available. The property is a no-smoking property.

Guest access
The cottage is all yours. It has its own front door access and is self contained. There is a shared driveway, but separate parking.

Other things to note
There are many good walks on the footpaths and bridleways surrounding the farm. With National Trust - Nap Wood just at the end of the lane, the walking in Ashdown forest is also extensive and holds the wonders of Winnie the Pooh and Christopher Robin and a trip to walk on the South Downs is also worth the effort, maybe ending up at a quaint village pub at the bottom of the hill.

There is good cycling locally too. We are on the Avenue Verte (London to Paris route) as the Cuckoo Trail is very close to us for good family cycling. Close too are The Bewl Water Resevoir with many cycle based activities, Bedgebury Pinetum with its extensive cycle tracks and walks.

Good local pubs and cafes in our and the surrounding villages are also a feature here. We would recommend the George Inn and Abergaveny Arms in Frant, The Huntsman in Eridge, The Middle House or Rose and Crown in Mayfield, The Crown Inn in Groombridge and The Hurstwood in High Hurstwood. Our local garden centre in Mark Cross has a very good cafe and sells excellent cakes and also locally caught fish on Thursdays to Saturday mornings. Within walking distance of the cottage is the Deer Park Cafe situated on the edge of Eridge Park which has a wonderful array on offer.
There are also two excellent local farm shops in Mark Cross (Renhurst Farm Shop) and Frant (Fullers).

Eridge Park (which the farm backs on to) hosts a number of events each year such as the Black Deer festival- June '21, The Decorative Living Fair- May and October, Muddy Dog Challenge - September and the Eridge Village Fayre June '21.

Local rock climbing and activities including dry slope skiing can be found at Bowles outdoor centre, High Rocks and Eridge Rocks.

Tunbridge Wells is the nearest main town with the historic Pantiles, many pubs and restaurants and if you time your stay right maybe a jazz, arts, beer or gin festival. London is under 1 hour away on the local trains.

There are many good beaches again within under an hours drive for example Camber Sands at Rye for fish and chips or Birling Gap with lunch at the Tiger Inn at East Dean. Brighton, Eastbourne and Hastings all make good seaside days away. Lewes and Rye also make good inland day trips for browsing the 'antique' shops.

Golf and trout fishing is available locally and the Bluebell Railway may interest a railway enthusiast.

We are also based close to a number of National Trust properties and other places of interest: Groombridge Place, Sissinghurst Gardens or Sarah Raven's home gardens of Perch Hill, the not to be missed tulip displays at Pashley Manor (timing dependant), Charleston Farmhouse (the country meeting place of the Bloomsbury set), Batemans (Rudyard Kipling's home), Scotney Castle, Penshurst Place, Leeds Castle, Battle Abbey, Hever Castle or the Observatory at Herstmonceux.

Making this the perfect location for a very varied stay.

Rotherfield, England, United Kingdom

The farm was originally built as the Eridge estate's model farm, taken out of the estate (the family home of the 6th Marquess of Abergavenny) some 50 years ago.

Hi and welcome to our rural retreat. We are a family of four living in the farmhouse near the Old Kennel. The farm has been family run for about 50 years and we love all things about this very special place. We hope to be creating a space where this can be shared with you.
