In 2004 I got the chance to design my own family's week-end house in the village Pigniu. This fabulous place at 1300 meters above sea in the Surselva Region of Graubünden province, above the Town Ilanz, was well-known to me, for my parents owned an old farmhouse until the 1980ies here. The Spiral shaped chalet has the form of a band, changing outward material from concrete in the base to wooden shingles in the upper floor.
The house is designed to connect us to the landscape we love.

The space
Even if the house is freestanding, an articulation of subdivided volumes is reached shifting the two levels to each other – this dynamic structure is loosening the massiveness of the house and connecting it to the alpine panorama with centrifugal forces. The materials of the house are chosen in relation the surrounding houses and barns. Its constructive language is connecting traditional elements wit modern techniques. The lower part is kept in concrete with a flat modular formwork – te upper one is of prefabricated wooden elements, covered with hand-cut larch shingles. The larch windows and shutters are the same for both parts – accentuating the continuity of the band. While the house is integrating with its outer appearance the inner spaces are completely different. The open spaces are divided only by levels and sliding walls. The continuity of the spiral is reflected in the spatial structure and thereby in the daily movements of the inhabitants. The soapstone fireplace is the centerpiece of the movement – continuing over two levels from oven to “chaise très longue” and ending in the kitchen.

I am a Landscape Architect, father of 3+2 children remarried to a lovely mother, living in Zürich and near Paris. I love landscapes, architecture, cities and their inhabitants in all their local varieties. I travel often for teaching, design & surveys of landscape architecture and for my pleasure with family. As traveler I either chose individualistic small hotels or book myself at private house via AirBnB and others. Starting from my own architecture developments I am renting out since 2008. I am your host in two very different architect’s houses on AirBnB with local hosts Kurt, Giselle, Justine, Paul and Andreea. Landscape Achitects Chalet Pigniu in Switzerland is my own design built in 2004 Landscape Architects Hofje is a former printer‘s house in The Hague was refurbished by an architect-couple who lived there until i bought it as my private residence in 2015. As a professional designer of living environments and sideways host I like to get inspired from other people's way of hospitaliy in an authentic manner to improve our own. As a traveler I never look for „best practice“ or , worse „standard“ properties - which you will probably also not find at those homes of mine. I was estate manager of urban boutique estates Parques Guesthouses. In Kralingen Rotterdam 2014 and Rietberg Zürich 2016 we provided 8 rooms each in typical local family townhouse or apartment until 2019. They where managed by my business partner Mascha and we had up to 7 extra staff. You will find more host reviews on Parques in Mascha Leummens profile who now runs Parques Pico in Wassenaar on her own.
