Sunset across the Stour from Ha'penny PierThe adjustable double Aerobed, it's very comfortable. The cottage is really warm and this room rarely gets cold, and there is an affective thermostatic fan heater in the bedroom for winter months as this room doesn't have central heating.

About this listing

Our lovely cottage with courtyard garden is on a very quiet street in old Harwich, just one road back from the pier. Excellent pubs and beach staggeringly close, 5 minute walk to train station, 2 stops to international ferry to Holland, London 1hr20m. To avoid confusion, contrary to what's listed below in Amenities, it's not suitable for pets or families as not enough space.

The space

The cottage is close to the international ferry services (2 stops & 5 minutes on the train), beaches, excellent pubs and restaurants in the immediate vicinity, and reputedly this coast of Essex has the sunniest microclimate in Britain.

Guest access

You will be sharing the cottage with us and you have access to the kitchen, wifi, (HD) TV, open fire in sitting room. Upstairs you have your own comfortable small bedroom which has a double Aerobed bed, a chair, a small set of drawers, a mirror, lamps, rug, etc.

Interaction with guests

Guests will be welcomed by us or a good friend of ours if we are away, and you have free rein of the kitchen, sitting room and garden. It is a homely cottage, (read 'not always tidy'), and your bedroom is your own domain while you are here.

Other things to note

The cottage was built in the late 1700s / early 1800s by the Dutch, who are notorious for maximising the use of space, hence the stairs are steep with narrow treads and high risers, just like on a boat.

Sarah welcomed us very freindly and showed us around the wonderful town. She was a perfect host. The very lovely cottage was great for a short (or longer) stay. All was perfectly equipted and clean. It has a beautiful garden and a great neighborhood. Few pubs, a little supermarket and a lovely beach is in walking distance. We would absolutly recommend staying here.

We loved the cottage and Harwich too. Perfect for what we wanted - a beach / boat / crabbing experience ! Our 3 year old was in heaven and the baby happy too. Sarah was welcoming, helpful and friendly - kindly left so many treats to welcome us. Harwich is a hidden gem and perfect for exploring other nearby places. We went to Colchester castle park, Felixstowe, dovercourt beach and Beth chatto gardens. All super. Would love to visit again ..

We had a wonderful stay at Fisherman's Cottage. Sarah was a welcoming and generous host, who made us feel very comfortable in her home. She even provided some fresh eggs, bread and wine, which were a very much appreciated after a long day on the ferry from Holland! The cottage is well equipped and well located - one street back from the pier. The home was full of quirks and interesting artwork. Sarah's recommendations for places to eat (the Thai and the Alma Inn) were great. All in all, we had a lovely stay and would definitely recommend Fisherman's Cottage.

I had messaged back and forth with Sarah a few times before we arrived, so felt I already knew a little about her. She was warm, welcoming and generous. Her pretty cottage was very clearly her home and not a sparsely-appointed "holiday let". Lots of interesting paintings all over the house, a fully-equipped kitchen, and a lovely garden with distinctive statues! We could not have been made more welcome or more comfortable. The cottage, although small, is so well-arranged that it feels like all the space you need. I quickly got used to going down the stairs backwards, on Sarah's advice (it is more like a ladder than most staircases!) And Harwich was even nicer than we expected. An abundance of good and welcoming pubs, chatty and friendly locals, and the food in the Alma is fabulous. Sarah's beautifully-written and funny guide to Harwich contained some excellent stories, including the one about the cross-dressing railwayman who lived in the High Lighthouse in the 1930s. They made the town come alive for us. By the end of the weekend my husband was wondering out loud if we could move there ...

I love travel, photography, food, friends, making new friends and life. My partner Clive and I have a gorgeous fun dog called Fergus who keeps us on our toes, and we have bought a yacht which we will be living aboard very soon. We are great guests, always leaving a place as we found it, and sometimes even fixing things which might need repairing while we're there! We are looking forward to being hosts.
