Interaction with guests

Staying at Tikondane is authentic ethical travel. ALL income from visitors and tourism goes straight back into Tiko, so your stay directly helps the people in our community. The Tiko crew will always be about for a chat or advice on local sights. There is a school on site so expect to meet lots of little ones! Also, you will see villagers collecting water from the onsite wells and attending HIV/AIDs counselling on a daily basis.

The neighbourhood

The Eastern province sadly remains as one of the poorest regions of the world, with people relying heavily on subsistence farming for survival. By staying here you won’t change the world, but you will help to make a difference to the lives of one or a few people. And we think that’s important.

Much of daily life in Eastern Province is still heavily influenced by traditional beliefs and practices. In the villages there is still the spirit of the gift society, where things are not sold but given and where everything is shared. It is because of the reliability of the extended family that people can survive a national unemployment figure of 80% and don’t feel needy. On the contrary, they seem to truly know about happiness.

Situated close to Katete in Eastern Province, Zambia, Tikondane is ideally located as a stop off on the route to numerous tourist destinations:

- Many people stay at Tikondane as a break from the road on the way to South Luangwa National Park, renowned as one of Africa’s best wildlife parks. Mfuwe is the closest town.

- Close to the border with Malawi and Zimbabwe.

Tiko is a very nice place when you want to have a feel of how the locals live. We arrived late at night and received a warm welcome. Then in the morning we saw the locals busy with various projects. This is a community based accommodation which is basic and neat. We enjoyed our stay here and made new friends.

I have lived in Katete for 22 years as cross-cultural psychologist. The people here have attitudes completely opposite to ours, but the way they put up with us is so charming, I would not want to be in any other place but my magic Tiko community centre. Other than the lodge we have many other activities, in education as well as in income-generating activities and in agriculture, and you are heartily invited to take part in our family. People like to show you what they are doing, they like to be photographed and - having you as an interested visitor, makes them feel better.
