Information for guest about Douglas lake

Set against the backdrop of the foothills of the Smoky Mountain, Douglas Lake is a popular recreation for all types of vacationers. The dam that controls the reservoir was built in 1942, stretches 202 feet high and 1,705 feet across the French Broad River. Douglas Lake provides 513 miles of shoreline and 28,420 acres of water surface for recreation activities. In a year with normal rainfall, the water level in Douglas Reservoir varies about 44 feet from summer to winter. Although most of the shoreline along the 43 mile-long lake is private. Amenities include restrooms with showers, picnic areas with tables, a boat ramp and a swimming beach.

Birdwatching: From late July to early October, birdwatchers will witness the fall migration of shore birds, wading birds, and other waterfowl that flock to Douglas Lake. The birds rest and feed on the muddy shoreline and in areas of shallow water exposed as the level of the reservoir is lowered to winter flood control levels.

Fishing: Nourished by three rivers, Douglas Lake has become the premier crappie lake in East Tennessee. Other good fishing includes: white bass, sauger, black crappie, striped bass, spotted bass, walleye, blue cat, flat head catfish, channel catfish, red horse, red breast sunfish and bluegill. Fishing is a year round sport at Douglas although spring and fall are the preferred seasons. From November to May, the wide shallow embayment, fertile creek hollows and stump beds, attract the crappie in huge numbers during the spring spawning season making crappie fishing excellent! Spring is the best time for bass fishing but you'll find there's good stock year-round.

Trails: If you want to add a hiking adventure to your time at the lake, the trailhead to the Trotter Bluff Small Wild Area (trail map) is adjacent to the Douglas Dam Headwater Campground. Hike the almost 2 miles of trail that winds through 30 acres of hardwood forest and limestone sinkholes to an overlook of the lake's tailwaters. Springtime hikes are enhanced with colorful wildflowers that dot the landscape. The Dandridge Partnership Trail is a 1.2 mile out-and back that winds through wooded terrain.

**Douglas Lake is a seasonal lake regulated by the TVA. There will always be water in the main channel however, during certain times of the year there will not be a lot of water at our shoreline. The TVA starts to fill the lake over Memorial Day and it is usually full by the end of May.. The TVA then starts to empty the lake after Labor Day and by the end of September, there is not a lot of water at our shoreline but there is still water in the main channel and you can drop your boat at one of the marinas on the main channel.

Douglas Lake is one of the cleanest lakes in Tennessee, and the only lake convenient to Sevierville, Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg, and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Douglas Lake attracts nearly 2 million visitors each year. It's an anglers paradise and is the site for several bass fishing tournaments each year, including the Tennessee B.A.S.S. State Tournament.

The resort is convenient to all this area has to offer: water parks, nascar rides, mini and regular golf, horseback riding, hay rides, zip lines, craft and antique shops, outlet malls, not to mention Dollywood, Dixie Stampede, the Titanic Museum, etc.

There are restaurants to suit every taste within minutes of the cabin.
Don't forget beautiful Cades Cove in the Smoky Mountains where you're sure to see deer, wild turkey, and if you're lucky, a bear or two.

Our family's stay at Susan's Panorama Cabin was excellent! We wanted to get away for a week of rest and relaxation in the Smoky Mountains. The cabin is nestled among the tree tops overlooking Douglas Lake. It's the perfect distance to the National Park, and the great shops and attractions in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. We liked the fact that it was not in middle of the tourist zone, but no more than 30 or 40 minutes away from everywhere we wanted to go: zip lining, caverns, whitewater rafting and some of the most beautiful hiking in the country. The cabin was very clean and had everything we needed for a great time. We would definitely stay here again.

We loved the area. It was tucked away and a great spot to escape. We loved the nature around us. It was a great place to relax after a day of hiking, biking and exploring around the Smokeys. The kids loved the hot tub as we used it every night!

Great cabin, very clean! Only issue is that it can be kind of tough to find. Not close to any main strips or streets, but that was exactly what we were looking for!

Comfy cabin with a great view. Loved the wrap around porch and hot tub. Plenty of space for my husband and I and our 2 sons.

My family of 8 arrived to a comfortable, well maintained, and clean cabin. The surrounding environment was so natural and our views from the L shaped deck were awesome. The lake water level was down so we were unable to fish but the playground area for the grandchildren was great and we enjoyed walking the area. Although we didn't utilize some outside amenitites (pool) the facility was clean and nicely furnished and the clubhouse a good place for family gatherings. Back to the cabin-the kitchen was better stocked with staples, dishes, and cookware than any place we've stayed (and there's been many). We are cookers/bakers and I was impressed. The oven temp seemed hotter than selected settings requiring monitoring of baked goods. Interior was nicely decorated, furniture and beds quite comfortable. Bed linens and pillows adequate. Had some initial trouble with the Wifi but after reset it worked fine. Bathrooms were clean and a good size for sharing. Was great to have a washer/dryer. We enjoyed the hot tub and spent a lot of time in the rocking chairs on the deck-lovely at sunrise and sunset. The only complaint we have is with the cabin sleeping 8 why have a table that only seats 4? There was 1 extra chair but Susan had let me know so we took extra chairs to accomodate us. However, it was crowded around the table. That said we had a blast and definitely will return. I would recommend to anyone year round-something for you to enjoy regardless the season. The cabin is secluded but it's proximity to local attractions is good and grocery access just several minutes away. My experience with our hostess, Susan, was she was eager to accomodate our needs, was very accessible, and responded promptly to inquiries before the trip; not to mention warm and friendly-she made me feel welcome before we got there. It was a unique, fun Thanksgiving for my crew. Highly recommend a visit to Panorama!

Our trip was INCREDIBLE! The cabin was everything it said it would be. There was nothing that lacked. The are was breath-taking and the local attractions were so much fun! We have a 12, 9 and 5 year old...when asked which vacation they like better, this or Disney world, two said this trip and the other had a hard time choosing! LOL The cabin was so clean and cozy. All cooking supplies were available. The hot tub was a real treat at the end of all our excursions. We will definitely be back. My kids can't wait! Susan, thank you for allowing us to create some unforgettable memories here. (My husband now wants to move to TN!)
