Sitting atop Banker's Hill, the most historic and romantic of San Diego's neighborhoods, is the Sherman Doig House (SDhouse). Built in 1887, this historic Victorian home offers the intimacy of bed & breakfast in the center of "Americas Finest City".

The space

This listing is for the lower 2 floors in SDhouse (a Victorian 4 story home) with private access and includes linens, towels, paper products, and kitchen accessories to make this your home away from home.

FloorsOne sleeps 7 and has 2 two-bedroom suites, each with 2 separate entrances and interiors of each suite separated by full length privacy curtains for each bedroom. FloorTwo is an example of a traditional Victorian 2 bedroom home.

If you have a larger group (more than 12), please refer to our other SDhouse airbnb listing for other options.
NOTE: We can also include the Carriage House for this listing, which includes an additional full sized bed, to increase sleeping capacity to 14.
In addition, there are a unique variety of optional 'extras' available which help set this vacation rental apart from any others in San Diego.
Check out SDhouse for more info using 'dot' us !

Guest access

Guests will have PRIVATE entry to FloorOne + FloorTwo which includes 2 full bathrooms, a full kitchen, butler's pantry, a large living room with flat screen TV and dining for 4 on each floor, and extra sitting area with kitchenette on FloorOne.

TERMS for AIRBNB guests:
Unexpected guests will automatically forfeit 100% of deposit, as we prepare the set-up, linens, towels, and paper products for a comfortable stay for the designated number of guests at the time of reservation.
If additional guest spaces are needed, we need at least 3 days advanced notice - and there will be additional charge at posted rates. (which MUST go through AIRBNB)
Likewise, because we match the space for the number of guests requested at time of reservation, we do NOT offer partial refunds if ANY of your guests cancel at within your group AT ANY TIME after the reservation made.
In order to ensure a peaceful environment for all guests, we limit entry to the house strictly to OVERNIGHT guests at ALL times - unless other arrangements are made to host an "event".
Events include meals, gatherings, parties, or any entrance of 1 or more individuals into the home (or using outside patios/decks) that were otherwise not part of the overnight guest roster.
If you would like to host an "event" at the house arrangements must be made at time of reservation. Events can only be held if there are no other reservations in the house.
Hosting an “event” without prior consent will forfeit 100% of deposit.

Interaction with guests

We prefer to meet and greet ALL of the guests in a reservation upon arrival. Other than check-in and check-out, we so however respect the privacy of our guests but remain available via email, text, or phone at all times.
NOTE: All reservation changes must be submitted through airbnb - including adding/reducing days and adding/reducing guests. We do not allow any alterations of reservations outside of the airbnb system (no exceptions).

Other things to note

The home is currently under stewardship of the trustee of the Bertha Stroud Family Trust and was purchased not only to establish a legacy estate for the heirs of the trust, but to share this historic landmark with locals and visitors to San Diego. This property was chosen because, just like the namesake of the trust, it is eclectic, whimsical, and possesses a unconventional character that can best be described as eccentrically unique.
This house is historically preserved and was registered as a California landmark for San Diego in 1975 after undergoing a complete structural and aesthetic restoration. So although there are modern amenities such as electric stove, energy saver refrigerators, microwaves, flat screen TVs, satellite dish cable, wireless internet, etc.....the construction is definitely from Victorian era. Stairs (both in and out) are steep and narrow, railings are historic (i.e. not current safety code), and plumbing is limited to a bath on each floor (except the first floor which has additional powder room and spa room because the former owner ran a luxury Day Spa).
Guests therefore must use caution when navigating between floors. This home is NOT suitable for small children, and guests under 18 may only stay on top floors.

We can make arrangements for your overnight guests to host an event - only with advanced notice, as there may be other guests staying on other floors. An event is any gathering that involves visitors to the house that are NOT part of the overnight guest list.

Cassandra made my group very comfortable. She was an incredible host! The home was beautiful and excellent for a big group. Excellent location near Little Italy!

The Ravenettes Banked Track Roller Derby team from Seattle and Arizona stayed here for a weekend while visiting and playing the San Diego Derby Dolls. The house was so eclectic and charming! Cassandra was even available to check us in early! Great for groups! The carriage house is adorable and great for just a couple. Close to downtown and the airport.

Cassandra made us feel very welcome. The building has a lot of history and the pictures don't do it justice. There were 6 of us staying and had a really comfortable stay. There is plenty of indoor and outdoor space and each one of us got our own bed. There is even a drive way to park a car which came in handy. Would definitely stay here again.

Cassandra made us feel very welcome. Upon arrival, she was friendly and gave a tour of the beautiful home. Everything was straight forward and the house rules were completely reasonable and easy to follow. The listing was very accurate to our experience. The description and pictures of the rooms and furnishings was spot on. Everything was extremely clean and well kept. The neighborhood was safe and quiet. The historical house masks any noises outside and we found it quite peaceful. The location was ideal because it was so close to Little Italy. Most mornings, and many evenings, we would travel under the bridge to the main drag in Little Italy (5 minute walk) and grab a bite to eat. Extremely convenient.

Cassandra's home was wildly wonderful! There is ample space for everyone and the decor in the house will keep you busy! There's so much in Cassandra's home. It's lovely, she met us and showed us the ropes and helped with my endless questions on transportation Thank you Cassandra!

Eight of us stayed in the house while attending an academic conference (at the Sheraton Marina). We found it to be a pleasant and more affordable alternative to staying at the conference hotel. Cassandra was quick to respond to inquiries and helpful in introducing us to the space. With one couple sharing a bed, the rest of us all had a bed to ourselves. Although we didn't all get a room of our own, the division of the two rooms in the basement with curtains meant the four people sleeping there each had some further privacy. We had plenty of bathrooms between us. We enjoyed using the shared living room space and kitchen. It is worth noting, given that guests don't have access to laundry facilities, that there is a launderette close by. The only drawback we could see to staying on the lower floors was that the rooms, particularly in the basement, don't get a great deal of daylight. The layout still worked out better for our group, but you might bear this in mind if choosing between the two spaces.

Response from Cassandra:
Our house is located high on a hill, and a portion of the rear of FloorOne is wrapped in cinder block, however the entry is ground level directly off of the driveway entry. So while FloorOne is the first floor of our house, it is NOT a basement! All of FloorOne rooms have widows, however they are all elaborate stained glass windows - and therefore the rooms end up with a 'filtered' daylight. Most guests enjoy the environment that this creates in their sleeping rooms - as FloorOne bedrooms are the quietest and darkest of any floor. In fact, when we have whole house reservations, FloorOne is the favorite choice for sleeping! Laundry facilities are not made available to our guests, which is clear on our listing. We reserve our washer/dryers to our cleaners who have 4 floors, 5 bathrooms (with dozens of towels), and 16 beds to keep clean! The local laundry mat and dry cleaners are 2 blocks away.

Formerly from Ohio, I migrated to California after medical school, grew roots, and haven't looked back since. (although I still miss real tomatoes, sweet corn, and Cedar Point)
My two "adult" children and I try to find time to travel together and stay in private homes when on vacation.

We have been using airbnb since 2007 and hosted many wonderful guests from around the world.

Currently we have a large Victorian house that can be split up many ways to accommodate a wide range of group sizes (from 1 to 26 guests) and thus we have 8 separate listings for variations within this house, with a private entrance for each.

Looking forward to your visit!
