Well-appointed room in the heart of the vibrant Alberta Arts district. Enjoy a well-equipped, small kitchenette, and clear-covered, second story deck covered with grapevines in the rafters!

The space
The room has a small window with views of the lush backyard and overlooks the neighborhood. The room opens into a granite countertop small kitchenette, air fryer toaster oven, coffee maker, rice maker, blender, electric cooking element, (no oven, except for the air fryer, which most guests prefer), and all the utensils, pots and pans, and dishes. The room has a queen size bed tucked into a cozy nook, and lots of hanging space, a desk, reading lamp, mirror and its own thermostat controlled heat. Refinished 100-year old fir floors add lots of character. It shares a full bathroom (newly tiled shower), with 2 other guests, across the hall.

You are welcome to enjoy the common areas of the house and outdoor areas.

The outdoor areas include: a front garden area with lovely fruit trees and plantings, a covered front porch with sitting areas surrounded by vines and a fig tree, a fenced in backyard completely surrounded by lush greenery and more fruit trees.

The indoor common areas include: a custom small kitchenette, with a small table and chairs. The kitchenette has a personal storage shelf, an air fryer toaster oven, coffee maker, rice maker, blender, electric cooking element, (no oven, except for the air fryer, which most guests prefer), and all the utensils, pots and pans, and dishes. We have a cleaner who deep cleans the kitchen, bathrooms, floors every two weeks. If you notice something that needs attention or cleaning please let me know! Guests are expected to clean the kitchen counters, wash their own dishes, and wipe down the bathroom sink after using them. The room and entire house have free high-speed, wireless internet.

During your stay
This upper-floor of the house usually has 2 other long-term guests. There is an easy self check-in system and the other long-term guests can also help you get comfortable with the house. I'm available through the Airbnb message system and prefer to use it for communication. If you don't hear back from me within an hour, there are instructions for contacting my backup. There are good opportunities to interact with other guests in the common areas of the house, but it also easy to find privacy. I've had some wonderful people stay here over the years and look forward to having many more.

Other things to note
Guests are expected to use headphones when listening to music, making calls, gaming or using zoom. Some noise is to be expected, but guests are usually careful to be extra quiet after 9pm and before 8am. Although the house is generally quiet, you may want to bring earplugs if you are sensitive to noise.
The kitchen and bathroom are shared spaces and guests are expected to clean up any messes and wash dishes immediately after using.

Lives in Portland, Oregon
I love living in Portland. I get to ride my bike around town most days or work on house or yard projects. I usually do a range of sports during the week depending on the time of year--including basketball, soccer, ultimate frisbee, running and cycling. However, my biggest sports passions are kitesurfing, rock climbing, and slacklining. I've been climbing for over 20 years and have put up many new climbing routes around Portland over the years. Depending on the time of year, I will have a slackline set up in the backyard. If you've never tried it, it's unlike any other balance sport...basically a single line trampoline that feels impossible at first, but is actually quite manageable after a bit of practice. I like gardening and have spent the last 10 years or so transplanting and cultivating trees, shrubs and sedums at the house. There are all sorts of perennial edibles here--cherry, plum, persimmon, fig, blueberry, huckleberry, strawberry, pear, grape, asparagus, kiwi and raspberry. Feel free to sample anything that's in season! I lived in Bolivia for a couple of years while I was in the Peace Corps and have traveled to about 50 countries since then. I like being an adventure traveler and enjoy hosting other travelers and visitors as well. I bought this house back in 2006 and it was practically unlivable. Then once I decided to replace all the plumbing, it was unlivable for about 3 months. doh! But that was years ago. These days, I continue to work on smallish projects around the house, whether it's transplanting my bamboo, adding a new gravel path, refinishing the 100yr old fir floors, planning a new garden bed, or building a covered bike storage area out of recycled materials.
