The Red Fox Retreat is the ultimate luxury glamping getaway location. A twist on the more conventional ‘pod’, the cabin features a curved wood interior entered from an arched doorway in front of which is situated a perfectly appointed king sized bed with amazing views of the Trottenish Ridge and the croft (farmland) that surrounds the property. It is warm and cosy to protect against the elements and yet light and airy. The cabin is accessed via a spectacular large undercover deck area.
The space
The Red Fox Retreat is a luxury glamping cabin. This means it is compact but by no means small. The cabin is a studio format, with a kitchen area along one wall and and separate bathroom on the other.
It features a sleek and well equipped compact deluxe self catering kitchen, complete with fridge and freezer compartment, two ring induction hob, excellent combined microwave, oven and grill, slimline dishwasher, toaster, kettle, toastie maker and a Krups Nespresso Aeroccino coffee maker with a range of complimentary coffee choices. We also offer a selection of twinnings teabags, fair trade sugar and luxury hot chocolate.
It also has a bathroom with a large rainforest shower, heated towel rail and storage. We provide all towels, as well as fluffy luxurious robes for your stay. We offer a range of complimentary toiletries from The Highland Soap Co throughout the retreat which are organic, sustainably packaged and fragranced with essential oils. We provide Bumboo loo roll which is made from bamboo and therefore is environmentally friendly.
The main studio has a small dressing table area with hanging space for clothes and drawers for belongings. We provide a hairdryer and diffuser. Bags and cases can be stored under the bed to save space.
There is a comfortable single armchair and accompanying footstool. The cabin has beautiful handmade HarrisTweed soft furnishings. It also features sheepskin rugs from Skyeskins, a local luxury stockist. We have heating throughout the property so you will always be cosy!
There is WiFi and a Smart TV, as well as Bluetooth speakers which you can connect to your portable device. We have USB charging points throughout the cabin.
Perhaps the most sought after feature of the cabin is the extensive deck area, which stars an antique roll top bath restored with love from a local property on Skye. From the comfort of the bath you can sit and gaze at the stars (with or without water, or clothes!) through the glass roof or admire the amazing views. We suggest you may like to bring your swimming costume if you want to preserve your modesty!
The deck also features an open air seating area, plush rugs, cushions and blankets, hanging chair and a hammock, as well as intimate outdoor lighting.
There is an outside area with seating and a fixed fire pit. We provide a wood box containing firewood, kindling, matches, firefighters and marshmallows, which if used we ask for a £10 payment. We can provide more wood if needed. We also have a bbq and tools available on request and charge £10 for this an a bag of coals. Please let us know the day before if you wish to use it and we will get this ready for you.
All in all the cabin is equipped to a standard perfect for our stunning remote location and for those who want to be completely self contained.
The cabin is the perfect place for a romantic getaway, honeymoon, elopement, anniversary, baby moon, special mini break, luxury adventure base or simply if you fancy some uninterrupted peace and quiet on your own! We welcome single people, couples, 2 friends who don’t mind sharing a king size bed. Please note the space is not suitable for babies or children.
If making a booking for a wedding, elopement or special occasion please make a booking enquiry first or send us a message on order that we can discuss the bespoke nature and details of such special occasions. We take wedding and elopement bookings directly only. If you book via Airbnb without an initial discussion we are unable to guarantee any additional celebratory packages and services, and may not be able to accept your booking.
We celebrate all cultures, races, genders and sexualities and would expect our guests to do the same.
We work closely with theGKexperience a charity close to our own hearts that offers young people life changing opportunities to experience the outdoors. £5 from every booking will be gifted to the charity and more information can be found in your welcome pack or on our social media.
Guest access
Guests will have the whole Retreat to themselves. this includes the cabin, large under-covered deck and surrounding outside space with fire pit and outside seating. The cabin is in the grounds of our home but has it’s own parking, entrance and outside area, and is not overlooked by our home, which is clearly separated by fencing and is some distance away from our property, in order to promote a sense of privacy and isolation for both you, our guests, and us! There are no other rental properties on site.
Other things to note
We like to ensure we help our guests be as prepared as possible, and so therefore it is important to understand that the Red Fox Retreat is in a remote location, which takes approximately 5-6 hours driving from the central belt (Glasgow or Edinburgh) We are in the North End of the Isle of Skye so when you reach the Skye bridge (if you come by road) we are another 1 hr 20 mins drive. Please note if you come from Glencoe/Fort William your Sat Nav may send you via the ferry from Mallaig- you must ensure that you check ferry times and potentially book before heading in this direction- it is a big detour if there is no boat! However, more generally - it is well worth the drive, and the main road from Portree on Skye to our property is perhaps one of the most spectacular drives in the UK- if not the world! Guests travelling without a car should note limited public transportation arrangements and a 20 minute uphill walk from nearest main road/bus stop. It is possible, but please don’t review us negatively for our completely spectacular location if you decide to come without a car. Being one of the nearest self catering properties to the Old Man of Storr by it’s nature means we are remote. Please remember this when booking. We promise it’s worth it!
We have Coop supermarkets on the island (Broadford and Portree) and our nearest excellent but small village shop Staffin Stores is a ten minute drive away, and is open Monday-Saturday during the day. There are two cafes in Staffin (The Hungry Gull & Columba 1400) which offer daytime food and some evening meals and takeaway on varying days largely during the Summer months. In Portree (30 mins drive) there are many restaurants and takeaways, but reservations are strongly recommended from April-October.
We provide a breakfast starter pack containing essentials like bread, milk, orange juice, fresh eggs (when available) and butter. We also will have an honesty shop where you can purchase simple meal ingredients e.g pasta and sauce if you get caught out, as well as more eggs, local ground coffee and other local produce. It is not possible to arrange online deliveries because of our remoteness!
We offer a range of celebration packages on request for guests who are staying as part of a special occasion. Please message us if this is something that you would like more information about. The packages include luxury breakfast hampers, celebration picnics, couples grazing boards and champagne on ice on arrival, amongst other services. These are offered on a strictly limited basis and are subject to availability. They require advanced booking generally 6 weeks minimum before a guests stay.
