The space
We used to do a lot of canoe camping in our younger days. We call this "glamping." Refrigeration, a/c, high-speed WiFi, and an oven are wonderful luxuries... Good news! We are fully solar powered!

We tried to imagine, if we were returning from a week-long canoe trip, what would we want? A hot shower, a washer and dryer, internet connection, and a good hot meal. We are “living the dream in the Adirondacks,” and we are happy to share with others.

Imagine waking up in the morning to birdsong. Cooking a hearty breakfast of pancakes with local maple syrup, yogurt, fruit, and bacon. Plan your hike of the day... will it be easy, medium, or challenging? Will you pack lunch, or plan to eat in a local cafe or diner? When you return, take a hot, refreshing shower outdoors, while enjoying the view of the woods.... Cook dinner on the grill, over the firepit, or on the stove indoors. Relax in the Adirondack chairs by the firepit. If it's chilly out, you can relax on the front porch with a cozy fire in the woodstove.

We have enjoyed visiting the Adirondacks for many years. My husband Richard and I retired in June 2024. We could not think of a more beautiful and peaceful place to live out our retirement years. We finally settled on the gray house in Westport, with 32 acres of wooded land.

We love the Westport-Wadhams-Whallonsburg-Essex area. The people are warm and friendly, creative and outdoorsy. We find people who enjoy hiking, crafting, gardening, making music... The Grange Hall and Whitcomb's Arts Studio in Whallonsburg are great places to meet people interested in art, jam sessions, and films. Classical music lovers will enjoy incredible performances at the Meadowmount School of Music during their summer program, as well as around the community (roughly June-August). Live theater performances are available right in the Westport train station building! You can find yoga in the park, Adirondack history exploration in Elizabethtown is great for a rainy day at the Adirondack History Museum.

Check the What's Happening in Westport FB page for local current events. When you make a reservation, I will send you a virtual “packet” of information about places to go, local events, restaurants, etc. We look forward to meeting you. 😉

Guest access
You have the entire camper, porch, high-speed satellite internet, full kitchen, indoor full bathroom with composting toilet, outdoor shower and washer/dryer, fire pit, outdoor seating, outhouse, and 32-acre woodland surroundings. Feel free to explore the private marked walking trails (former logging trails). Park in front of the camper.

There are two barns and a gray house nearby, which are not included. My husband Richard is a talented woodworker. He makes beautiful bread knives, cutting boards, furniture, cabinets, as well as urns and caskets.

We are located in a central area… You can reach us easily from I-97, the “Northway,” exit 31. To the east you will find the Champlain Valley, farms, the easier Champlain Area Trail System (CATS) hiking trails, the ferry to Burlington, Vt. To the west you will find Elizabethtown, the gateway to the high peaks region of the Adirondacks (Giant Mountain, Owls Head, Baxter, and more), and on to Keene, Keene Valley, Keene, Lake Placid, etc.

Other things to note
Please keep in mind... this is a camping experience. You may hear coyotes. You may see deer, foxes, raccoons, opossums, toads, chipmunks, turkeys, owls, and other wildlife. We have never yet seen bear or raccoons on our property, but it could happen, so please avoid leaving food out unattended.

Be aware of mosquitos, biting flies, poison ivy and ticks. We recommend insect repellant. If you don't know what poison ivy looks like, I can show you.

If you do touch poison ivy, be sure to scrub thoroughly with soap and cold water within 15 minutes. You'll find a first aid kit in the hallway drawers, if needed. The first aid kit contains an anti-itch solution.

Check yourself carefully for ticks. There is a large mirror on the front porch with good light for this purpose. You can pull your socks up over your pant legs for protection. (No, it's not fashionable... but it could prevent a tick bite, so it might be worth your trouble.) It is important to remove them as soon as possible.

Please note, this is a camping experience. Mice and spiders want to come inside. We are fighting a never-ending battle, with brooms, cleaning solutions, and traps. Please keep food inside the refrigerator or in snap-on bins (located under the bench seats in the dining area). We scrub and wash down surfaces. We are currently working on stuffing every edge and corner with stainless steel wool to become mouse proof. Wish us luck... We run all the dishes through the dishwasher before each visit. We appreciate your help in minimizing crumbs and other temptations.

Relax, enjoy, and breathe in the amazing fresh, clean air. Hear the bird songs, enjoy the local waterfalls, mountain views, and endless hiking 🥾 opportunities (easy to challenging). If you’re not sure, I’m always happy to advise, based on my experience and comments from previous guests.

Neighbourhood highlights

The camper is located on the edge of our 32-acres of forest. We have two barns and a lumber shed for a functioning carpentry shop nearby. Richard drives a skidsteer to clear snow, haul rocks and firewood, clear our hiking path, etc.

The Champlain Valley is the "breadbasket" of the Adirondacks. You will find numerous organic farms... The Essex Farm, Full and By, DaCy Meadow, Juniper Hill, and many more. You can purchase their products at the Essex Food Hub in Westport, or the Elizabethtown Farmers' Market on Fridays, at the Keene Farmers' Market on Sundays.

We have theater performances available at the Depot Theatre in Westport. In the summer Ballard Park in Westport offers concerts on the lawn (usually on Thursday evenings). The Whallonsburgh Grange offers independent movies, concerts, and special events in spring, fall, and winter. In the summer it is dedicated to a summer theater camp for kids. The Whitcombs Gallery, across the street, offers exhibits of local art, occasional workshops, and a weekly music jam on Thursdays, 6:30-8:30 (bring your guitar, mandolin, harmonica, voice, etc.).

Westport has been growing recently! We have a new florist, Vagabond Blooms; a deli, K&D; several gift shops, Ledge Hill and the Finishing Stone; a bookstore, Snow Fort Books. Restaurants include Jambs coffee shop, The Mountain Dog (which welcomes pets, if you eat on the outside patio), Winton's Tavern, Portside at the marina (summer only), The Yacht Club nearby (summer only), The Knock located in the renovated Mill (for comedy, music, and vegan fare).

You can reach Burlington in an hour (check the ferry schedule from Essex, NY to Charlotte, VT). Burlington is a vibrant city, with music, restaurants, and every type of business.

The high peaks of the Adirondacks are 30 minutes to the west of us, through Elizabethtown.

Upon booking, I will send you a "virtual packet" with detailed information about hiking, biking, shopping, swimming, sites to see, eating out, etc. It includes addresses, websites, and more.

We purchased our Adirondack dream home in 2020. We built the structure around the camper in 2021, so we could visit often. We finally moved here permanently in June 2024. We love hiking, skiing, gardening... My husband Richard is a talented woodworker, so you will see his handiwork everywhere! We consider ourselves ADK tree huggers and hope you do too!
