About this listing
We live in upper Manhattan in south Harlem, close to the top of Central Park & 10 minutes from Columbia Uni. Gentrification has hit Harlem. Yes, it's a safe area with a great vibe/energy and friendly people. Minutes from Great subway lines (Express A,D) 2 stops to Times Square! Our building is older but our apartment is spacious and well kept. You have access to the kitchen, living room for eating computer use and free wifi. Please don't expect ritzy glitzy soho :) Do expect a true NY experience
We have 2 rooms (or even 3 rooms if all are open) available for rent. Sergio and I will be also staying in the apartment (we have a huge space for NYC! 4 bedrooms). One bedroom has two beds, one is a trundle that pulls out and both are real mattresses. And we have the option to put a super comfy air mattress in another room that fits 2 more people.
We're located in the best part of Harlem. A 8 minute walk to Central Park, new grocery store, laundry, new bars and restaurants, and a 10 minute walk to Columbia University. This is NYC true living. We're not fancy or too upscale, our building is older but our unit is rehabbed and clean. I price reflects all this, otherwise it'd be triple the cost :)
Located by the A,B,C,D,2,3 Subway lines (all are Express except B,C!!) so train takes 10 mins to Midtown, 15 mins to Times Square, and the Village in 20. You can get anywhere you need to go very easily with these subway lines!
Free Wifi. Elevator building. Filtered drinking water. Clothing iron. Blow dryer for hair. Refrigerator space. Kitchen use for simple meals. No curfew. You can access the entire apartment except for our bedroom. You can use the kitchen, living room (sorry TV doesn't work! but we can give you a netflix code for your computer). you can store food in the fridge/cook *light meals. We ask you to clean the kitchen and dishes/counters as clean as you found it. Use of the couch for your computer or table in living room to eat. NOTE: Please keep noises and conversations in common areas (kitchen, living room, hallways) down between 10pm to 11am. Sound carries through the walls of our old apartment building and we'd like to be respectful of the sleeping habits of all in the apartment :)
Interaction with Guests
We provide as much or as little interaction as you prefer. We can offer up recommendations or help if you like, or leave you be to have total privacy.
The neighborhood is great and safe. yes you will be in harlem, and we are ethnically diverse...but it is is all good! Harlem has changed a lot over the years. You can find many great cafes/restaurants/grocery stores on Frederick Douglas Blvd. Central Park is 8 minute walk, Columbia U is 10 minute walk, historic Apollo theater is 5 minute walk.
Nearby Subway lines are awesome! Get you anywhere you need to go in Manhattan or Brooklyn easily.

Soooo...about me: I've been a host on here since mid 2012....before Airbnb was really cool :) As a host, I like to do all I can to make your stay enjoyable, which shouldn't be hard in NYC. First-time visitors to the U.S. and solo travelers often enjoy staying with us. Professionally, I'm a producer/writer/journalist...and love learning about new people, things and places. Curiosity is an innate quality! I've traveled many places in the world and want to do more and more of it.
Airbnb is a super cool platform and way to travel. All we ask is to please actually read this listing, and to please have a completed profile with info and at least one pic (and it's not to judge you based on looks but instead so we can see the face of whomever wants to stay and sleep in our home...surely that's understandable). We also ask you to realize you are not booking a hotel but instead space in our home. We keep it clean and tidy for all. Respect those basic principles and we're likely to get along- it's that easy.
As for our location, while it is not ritzy glitzy soho or super trendy (and expensive!) West Village, I enjoy living in Harlem, which is in upper Manhattan, because it has a warm, energetic vibe. I am close to many great subway lines that can take me anywhere in the city (and to Brooklyn, Queens when needed). The people in this neighborhood are friendly...if you take a moment to enjoy it up here :) We are right on top of Central Park, less than a 10 minute walk away. The A train subway is only 2 stops to Times Square....but you won't have all the crazy hustle and bustle and non-stop noise like down there. We have many new and great places to eat, grab a drink, listen to jazz, go for coffee and so on.
My old roommate and Airbnb partner was Jimena, she's the one in the picture with me and Michael Moore (he's a big fan of ours :)- Please mention the phrase "I love Bananas" in your reservation request as the code word so I know you actually read all this and are not a robot just copying and pasting requests (seriously :0). Now, my current Airbnb partner/BF is Sergio. That's him in the other photo, and you'll see him mentioned in some of the recent reviews.
Peace out...and maybe we'll be welcoming ya to NYC soon,
J & S
