About this listing

Lakeshore traditonal 'Cortijo' (rural house) with fantastic views & easy access for swimming in the cleanest waters you'll ever experience. 10 mins from beautiful Castril and IN the National Park

The space

My calendar is updated every day so you may 'Instant Book' with confidence. :)

My holiday home is a traditional Andalucian 'cortijo' (rural cottage) in a remarkable position on the edge of Portillo lake just outside the famous heritage town of Castril.

Fine lake views from the first floor, and astounding one from the rear garden... but the best bit is the lake itself below the house that will probably provide the best bathing of your life - clear, clean fresh water that has an amazing green/azure glow from the limestone rocks. We supply inflatable rubber rings and a snorkel and mask. During the year of renovation we never had to share the bathing beach below the house with a single other (URL HIDDEN) it feels like your own lake.

Once down at the water you can see for miles across the National Park...and not single property in sight - it really is a very special location.

Days out will take you to the Alhambra in Granada (a 'wonder of the world'), a choice of lakes and geo-thermal spas, or the coast which has a surprising number of small, traditional and unspoilt resorts.

Ground Floor:

Lounge - with large (and good quality) double sofabed, radio, open fire (plenty of free wood down at shore). Dining table for 6

Kitchen - oven, hob, toaster, kettle, fridge with small freezer compartment, two sinks, small dining table for 2/4

Bathroom - large room with large new double shower. hairdryer

Upstairs:

Master bedroom - double with great lake view

Bedroom 2 - large room with double and single bed, and direct access out to rear garden

Outside:

Parking for 2 cars
Dining table and chairs for 4
lounge chairs and outdoor rug
Astounding views from the land at the rear

Guest access

A whole house, with two bedrooms, and access down to the lakeshore for swimming.

Interaction with guests

Communication is mostly by email, though I have a local housekeeper in case of problems. Access is typically via a keycode so late arrivals are ok.

Other things to note

Note that young children would need to be supervised in the back garden as there is a sheer drop to the water.

Wow - Just Wow! After having stayed in some stunning locations, Amazon Rainforest, Rio de Janeiro, Maldives, Thailand I can say that this place was my favourite!!! The setting is idyllic, it really is paradise and looks even better when you visit than it does in the photos. The house has been refurbished to a great standard. The lake is amazing, it has beautiful islands you can swim out to. It's the perfect place to retreat and relax. Can't wait to return, thank you Greg!

This place is amazing, the views are incredible and it is a great place to get away and relax with no technology. Castril is within walking distance and worth a visit, as is taking a trip further into the national park for some great walks. The cottage is very rural and other than the neighbour Paco you will probably be alone the whole time. Paco is very friendly and has some lovely cats including two 35 day old kittens which he was kind enough to show us. The black BMW is no longer parked outside as per the instructions but it's not hard to find the spot about 30m from the building. The bed in the master is a bit collapsed in the middle so could do with a new mattress but this small issue is not a big deal overall. I would definitely recommend Greg's place!

We had a great time in this house in Castril. The surroundings are beautiful! Just like the pictures. We enjoyed our daily breakfast at the private terrace with lake view. We did nice hikes and haven't seen any other tourists. There are good facilities in the house and Castril is a friendly little town. Not speaking Spanish could be a problem, but the neighbour can use sign language and locals are likeable and patient.

Greg was very well organised and communication for the arrangement of our stay was good. We didn't meet Greg. The cottage has been respectfully refurbished and provides comfortable clean but fairly basic accommodation. We loved it. The situation is fantastic with amazing views over the lake and mountains, which we loved too Great place for a quiet retreat and Castril is a pretty village with good local facilities.

This was a fantastic location, apart from the neighbour we saw very few people and were able to swim alone, it felt like our own private lake. If you like remote and quiet, this is the place for you. The views are stunning.

My partner and I have just spent a very relaxing and stress free week in this wonderful and charming home. Everything was perfect, in the most beautiful setting. We could not have asked for more, as we enjoyed the comforts of the cottage, views across the mountains, swimming in the lake, adventurous walks, canoeing, drives, the lovely town of Castril and the sheer escapism of it all. Thanks Greg for sharing such a unique spot. Looking forward to visiting again.
