This stay was wonderful for our family (kids are 10,8,8). It's in the midst of a jungle fruit orchard, we could walk out the door and gather fruits for a smoothie! Nearest town is about 10 minute drive. Run off of solar, the house operates near a normal "city" home, just a few minor adjustments which were no big deal to us. You can hear the ocean at night, it's a short walk to ocean overlooks and a 10-20 min drive to some protected snorkeling areas. This area is less "tourist-y" than Kona, which we appreciated. We were able to view the current lava flow and visit volcano park (appx 1 hr). Most importantly, our host Bill was most welcoming and helpful. He was available for anything we needed and made sure we felt at home in the area. We would definitely stay here again!

Bill's cottage is a wonderful home away from home and a peaceful unique retreat rolled into one. The cottage was clean and filled with all the amenities you could need from bathroom toiletries to beach towels and snorkel gear. We so appreciated everything that he supplied us with in the kitchen... his farm fresh fruit, free range eggs, and the fantastic coffee were just the highlights. My husband and I loved our morning walk with coffee to the beach to watch the sunrise and see the turtles swimming. Bill let us know all the great places to go nearby as well as when the local markets were on. This stay was a highlight for our family - our kids (10 and 12) prefered this stay in the jungle with no TV or air conditioning over the condo we stayed at in Kona. Bill was very generous with his time as well giving us a tour of his fruits and spices. I think our kids liked that best as well as the geckos that provided hours of entertainment and kept the cottage free of all insects. My only regret is that we did not stay for longer - we would love to come back and stay here again!

I experienced good communication with Williams. The arrival was easy and successful. He had placed eggs (the best ever) in the fridge and fresh fruit on the counter ! The house is spacious and looks nicer than the pictures on airbnb tell ! He is providing bottled water and treated water from town, as his is rain water collection. Williams is friendly and kind, he showed me around his amazing fruit and spice orchard/jungle which was very delightful and delicious. He even has bees ! Expect to be in a jungle when staying at Williams house... There are a few down sides: the frog are insanely loud and immediately outside the window, the house is directly on the road, he has to run the generator every night for 2 hours and sometimes in the morning for 1 hour at 6.45am, also there are annoying goats across the street which are not his i believe ... I think the house needs some urgent detailed cleaning !! and there is a little musky smell in the house probably due to mildew or mold hence it is so incredibly wet around that area ... As a general observation it would be so nice to see more people use natural/organic/biodegradable cleaning product as a favor to sensitive guests and also for the health of each one of us and the earth *_* especially when living in such natural paradise ... I am getting a new generator this week ( a Honda) that is very quiet as my present one has been making more and more noise even though 200 feet away from the cottage. I know Marlen was very concerned about night noises, but there is nothing I can do about the coqui frogs which are all over the Island and which chirp at night. And although I told her about chirping frogs before her visit, she still decided to book. However many of my guests have told me the frogs remind them of crickets and they aren't bothered.

Great stay in Pahoa. We really enjoyed the off grid stay on Bill's orchard, the little bit of generator noise for a couple of hours was well worth the beautiful dark skies at night! While I realize this might not be for everyone, we really enjoyed it. We learned what a Rambutan was and ate a bunch of them! The house is wonderful and quite roomy - oodles of gecko's to keep the bugs down. An old friend joined us and the setup made for great conversations inside and outside looking over the gazillion lush plants on the property. Lots of great things to do in the area and doubly great to have a long time resident host with local tips (the beach was awesome :) Would stay again.

Bill was incredibly welcoming and gave us a thorough tour of the place as well as recommendations of things to do in the area. It was lovely to stay at tree top level in his cottage, which was fully stocked with what you'd need (including the best guide book on the island that we came across!). The delicious fruit from his orchard was a lovely bonus.

Bill's cottage was very beautiful, with a wrap around porch and elevated so you feel like you're in a tree house. We enjoyed the tide pools, the thermal pool, the fresh fish place in Pahoa, reading books on that porch, and the bird and insect noises at night.

I am a retired Horticulturist and Urban Forester now living in the beautiful area of lower Puna Hawaii. I was born in Washington D.C. but have lived in North Carolina and California most of my life before now calling Hawaii my home.
The private guest cottage is on my 9 acre Tropical Orchard, just steps to the sea . My cottage is just down the road where I live with a friend, our dogs and chickens.
I enjoy sharing my tropical fruit, flowers, and range free eggs with guests and learning whatever my guests want to share about their selves.
I like living here for the weather, the rural and primeval location, and mostly for the wonderful community that embraces all life styles . And I strive to take an active part in the community.
This area of Hawaii is truly unique with many natural attractions and there is even an active volcano nearby.
I have traveled to South America, Europe, Australia and Thailand, but hope to still travel to other countries, like China, Turkey, Russia etc. I really enjoy learning about different cultures and especially trying new foods.
I also love to read and keep up on politics. I speak Spanish, having lived in Chile , South America as a Peace Corps Volunteer.
