The neighbourhood

Very safe environment, 24 hour security, entry only with hotel issued wristbands. Local people very friendly. A trip to town (5 mins- 3 euros) by taxi) is a must! Excellent, well trained and helpful hotel staff, mostly of Cape Verdean nationality. Many different nationalities stay at this resort, both guests and owners. Supermarket and bank for self catering supplies in next door (south) Vila Verde Complex. Tortuga Resort and now Llana Beach Resort/Bikini Beach (owned and run by same company next door if you fancy a change of scene).

Getting around

Short 10 min walk (or buggies are always around for a lift) through lush hotel gardens to Ponta Preta beach. Santa Maria town 5 mins by local bus (1 euro) or taxi (3 euros) from reception, or 40 mins walk round the coast. 10 mins by taxi to the wind/kite surfing beach on the East coast. Hire a car, bike, beach buggy, or scooter. Welcome pack included in price and airport collection by arrangement. A trip to the capital, Espargos, is worthwhile, as is an island tour to see the salt pans, protected loggerhead turtle nesting sites, plus whale watching (in season) or deep sea fishing trips and various other sights.

Other things to note

Discount for stays of 7 days or more (automatic).

Welcome pack, electricity, water (and drinking water) included in price.

Medical services are good and at reasonable cost. There are doctors and dentists around plus chemists and a hospital. Details supplied. For anything more serious you are flown to Praia the Cape Verdean capital, or flown home.

Mosquitos are around more at certain times of year for example from July to Sept/Oct, so if you are susceptible please take your own sprays/ointments etc., although the local shops do stock them.

Please do not leave doors/windows open when air con is turned on, as this reduces its effectiveness and is a waste of power. Also ensure mosquito blinds are in place when windows/doors open.

I can't say enough good things about Geri's place!! I loved the activities and hangout spots at the resort. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay in Cape Verde and would highly recommend her place. Ps: Thanks for the welcome pack Geri :)

The apartment is great, spacious for 2 people, fully equipped. right next to one of the quieter pools, good selection of DVDs/books available and check in was very easy. Melia itself is lovely - total 5* resort. We didn't use the services there beyond the pools and the occasional drink (reasonably priced - £2 for coffee/small beer/tea) - we would have had a meal on site but found it too difficult to find prices/hotel staff kept giving different information with the check in guy just saying 'very expensive' so we decided against. Not a problem as it was just for our first night but it seems the only way to find out prices is to go and order. The hotel is quite out of the way and obviously set up for all inclusive but once we figured out the area we were glad we had not gone for that option - there is a free bus from the hotel at 9, 10, 11am and back at 4, 5, 6pm. Taxis always available and we thought that taking a taxi a couple of times a day was a fair trade off for staying at such a lovely place. Also, the Ponta Preta beach restaurant was a handy find - 15 min walk there for times when you don't want to go into town for food. Food in town ranged from roughly 15euro for a meal and drink on the main road to 5 euro for a meal and drink in the local eats which were very good. Cannot fault the weather in April, each day was bright sunshine, night times are quite draughty so long dresses/trousers and a jacket were more suitable. Overall, this place is perfect for a peaceful, relaxing holiday and will be my choice of accommodation if I visit Cape Verde in the future.

My friend and I stayed at Geri's apartment for one week in January. From booking Geri was available when needed and provided us with lots of info to get us started. The apartment itself was extremely confortable with quality furnishings, more than was expected from a rental. There is a full modern bathroom and gorgeous terrace overlooking the pool. We didnt need it but there is air con too. If you are spending time in the apartment there is a good selection of tv channels. The resort is huge and you have the option of upgrading to all inclusive/half board. We preferred to eat out in the town which is 3/4 Euros (3-4 min drive) in a taxi and has a large selection of places to choose from. The hotel resort has numerous pools and bars and their food is also of a high quality. There is a beach in the resort which is stunning. Whilst in Cape Verde there are lots of excursions available and we tried the buggies- highly recommended! We would not hesitate to book this apartment again due to its comfort, location, facilites and flexibility. Thanks Geri!

Geri's apartment is in the heart of the resort. It's the second time I've stayed at Melia Dunas and I'm sure it won't be the last. I should imagine I will book with Geri again in the very near future! It's the perfect getaway and great value!

Thank you Daniel, for a great review, and for communicating so well! I'm very pleased you enjpyed your week there. Just a shame the weather was not brilliant for a few days - quite unusual, but not unheard of at that time of year. Would be very happy to host you again and look forward to hearing from you in due course.

Geri was a wonderful host from start to finish. She answered all my questions and she made me feel well prepared for my stay which was important as I travelled on my own. Everything went like clockwork, from the airport taxi waiting for me, to collecting the room key and to upgrading to all inclusive at the hotel. The apartment was very welcoming and I appreciated the extra touches like the water filter and washing machine and the TV film channels and DVD player. It was also well equipped for self catering even though I chose to upgrade to all inclusive. The double bed was comfy and I slept well every night. The location of the apartment was ideal as it was right by my favourite quieter pool, away from the more active/busy pools. It was situated perfectly in the middle of the complex so you don't have too far to walk, although there are little car buggies to take you anywhere you wanted within the hotel complex. I cannot fault it and I would definitely book it again or any of Geri's properties.

Response from Geri:
Wow Vickie, thank you for that - a great review indeed and all true of course! I am delighted I was able to provide the means for a great holiday for you and look forward to welcoming you again in the future. Hopefully you won't have to wait for so long for a holiday next time!

I am a busy 60+ year old, despite having had a serious horse riding accident over 30yrs ago which put me in a wheelchair, thereby slowing down or putting a stop to most of my outside interests such as farming and horses. We still have cows and sheep. I now get all the family's clerical and administrative jobs. In the past, I have set up and run a computer staff agency in London, then back in the country, a tea rooms, b&b, farm shop, and 2 campsites, one with carp fishing lakes. My husband left after my accident, but I have wonderful PAs and I enjoy travelling when I can. My favourite destinations are Scotland, Co Kerry in Ireland, the Cape Verde Islands, Florida, Portugal, Canaries, and Spain, but some are more wheelchair friendly than others. I enjoy my own garden, reading and trips to local places of interest such as NT Gardens etc., meeting friends for lunch or the cinema, plus the occasional trip to London where I lived for 12 years before my accident. I enjoy new projects, and I have tried to make my rental apartments home from home that people will want to return to.

My motto is 'Never give up! There's a wonderful world out there'.
