The space

If you are looking to relax and escape hectic life, you have found the perfect spot.

Calamity Cabins are situated in the rugged, remote, sparsely populated Medicine Bow Mountains near the Colorado/Wyoming border.

Situated on a forested mountainside and built in the 1800's, this one room, historical, authentic trapper's cabin still stands. Be prepared to rough it, although in rugged luxury.

It is approximately 200 square feet studio with a king-size bed, a small sitting area, and a primitive kitchen area. The cabin is constructed of hand chinked, log antique railroad ties, with a simple pine floor, and exposed beam vaulted ceilings. The rugged décor is locally collected or found, and authentically western. There are incredible views of mountain landscapes out every window.

It is a rustic cabin-which means there is no indoor plumbing. This requires making trips to the nearby new, hand-built, clean outhouse. The outhouse is located 60 feet from cabin, and shared with the other guests.

We provide you with potable, washing and drinking water. The kitchen area features an electric teapot for heating water, a microwave, a Kurig coffee pot with coffee, and a cuisine-art electric stove top burner.

There are also basic cooking items in the kitchen: plates, bowls, cups, silverware, pans, paper towels, wooden spoons, cutting board, sharp knife, and a washing station. Prepare for a visit as you would a camping trip, with these amenities provided. You are also welcome to use our grill or cook on the campfire.

The bed is a luxurious, clean king size pillow-top bed, topped with a down comforter with the best mountain view from the bed.

The Trapper Cabin has limited access to electricity. But there are outlets for phone charging and appliances.

The cabin is heated by a gas fireplace (looks like a wood burning stove but burns natural gas). There is also electric heat backup.

The front porch is where you spend most of your time taking in the wild surroundings, or at the nearby communal campfire ring, breathing the crisp mountain air.

We have a 20' communal teepee on the mountain top to relax in.

Hike, ski, snowshoe, snowmachine, or four wheel drive from your cabin door into the Medicine Bow/Routt National Forest finding endless, winding logging roads leading into Wyoming. Discover the untouched, rugged wilderness that surrounds our property that is full of remnants from pioneer logging and mining camps. The North Sand Dunes are 4 miles away...easily accessible by ATV or vehicle from the cabin, it is unique and beautiful.

The entire 80-acre property consists of three rental cabins and our home. The cabins, including ours, are located on approximately 10 acres and although private, they are in close proximity of each other. (see photo)

Where you’ll be

Walden, Colorado, United States

We are located in a very isolated part of Colorado. Jackson County is about 1500 square miles and the population is 1500 people. That is one person per square mile.

"North Park" is what the locals generally refer to this large, undiscovered area. If you are an outdoors person, or want to reconnect to the outdoors, we are in a perfect spot, as not only our immediate surroundings, but the entire park is full of mountain hiking trails, lost alpine lakes, and undiscovered fishing streams.

The National Forest and the North Sand Dunes are absolute heaven for skiing, hiking, snowshoeing, motocross or ATV activities.

We are located close to a few Natural Hot Springs. The Hobo Pool (FREE with showers!) in Saratoga, Wyoming which is 60 miles. We love eating and drinking at The Wolf Hotel when we visit Saratoga. Strawberry Park Hot Springs is a must see in Steamboat Springs, Colorado which is 80 miles from us. These would both be a fun day's adventure.

Restaurants in Walden are open.
