A simple secluded shepherd's hut for two, nestling in the corner of a meadow, facing woodland. Near Hay-on-Wye, on the England Wales border. Outdoor covered kitchen and sitting area ,compost loo and hot shower nearby . complete privacy .

The space

A cosy interior with a woodburning stove. Wood and kindling provided .There is a generously-sized verandah with a fully-equipped summer kitchen and sitting area.

A stile leads into a willow-fringed childrens' playground which also has a clay oven – you can make pizzas with the kids. There is a total of four acres which includes an extensive garden, as well as access to neighbouring woodland and an extensive local network of public footpaths.

Montpelier Cottage is the home of Jo Eliot and Noel Kingsbury, a peaceful rural retreat on the Welsh borders 5 miles from the 'book town Hay-on-Wye.

A special feature here is the garden. Noel is a well-known writer and researcher, and the 4 acre garden functions as test plot, full of flowers and buzzing with insect life and birds.

Well behaved dogs welcome though we do have 2 cats.

Additional camping (max. two tents) negotiable.

Guest access

Close-by there is a compost loo, standpipe and a simple hot shower cabin. Parking is at the top of the meadow, about 80m.

Interaction with guests

The hut is completely secluded and invisible from the house. Montpelier Cottage is down a track, surrounded only by fields and woods. You need not see us at all, but of course we are available for help and advice.

We had an absolutely amazing time in this magical and lovely place. It was beyond our imagination and even better than the description. We enjoyed staying in the hut and the beautiful surroundings including Josephine's gardens. We would highly recommend it!!

Vast skies, misty blue hills. Simple, romantic shepherds hut with veranda, wood burner and pizza oven. Children's play area guarded by sheep. A special place with Hay-on-Wye close by.

A wonderful night spent here, the hut has everything you need. Jo helped us with the clay oven and we had real fun cooking our pizza. Lovely forest walk close by. Very peaceful setting. The hut could probably do with some TLC but I think this just adds to its rustic charm. Thank you for our stay.

JO's hut is a perfect rural back to earth retreat - we had a wonderful night away cooking in the summer kitchen and laying back to watch the stars come out by firelight - we will definitely return - the meadow where the hut is quiet and very private with a wonderful children's playground and clay oven begging for home made pizzas. The summer kitchen has a good range of pans, utensils, crockery etc dont forget tea coffee milk etc - the camp cooker is gas with a grill. There are lots of local walks and we would recomend brilley green lanes up to merton hill. The boat inn is the nearest pub and got to garage or line is in hay on wye sells all you need. Noel supplies wood for the fire basket but you can collect in the adjoining wood - just add food wine and good company for a great experience!

We had a lovely relaxing time staying in the shepherds hut, I booked it as a surprise 2 anniversary present for my husband and we weren't disappointed. The hut and kitchen had everything we needed and Josephine made us & our spaniels really welcome. The locations is perfect and we explored the local area on foot. Even when it was a bit wet we sat out on the veranda enjoying having time to read and watching the weather rather than it being an inconvenience & the log burner keep us coast. The stars are really bright there! Would love to come back and stay for a bit longer. I really liked how down to earth Jo & Noel's explanations in the information pack were, we felt very much at home. Thank you.

The hut and location is exactly as described. Lovely big meadow all to yourself - very secluded and private. Josephine was lovely and made sure that we had a warm welcome and showed us to our hut. The Boat Inn is about a 20-30 minute walk through a wood, so we had some beers & food and then headed back to the hut for a bbq. Great stay.
