Maria is an excellent and very welcoming host. She made sure that I had all that I needed, including information about the neighborhood, and breakfast every morning (fresh coffee, bread, cheese, jam, yoghurt, and homemade scones and jam - nice) a perk of the stay that I had actually forgotten about! She was also happy to answer the questions I had about Lisbon. I could not have hoped for a better host!
The room is a decent size, on the first floor, with plenty of space to keep clothes, two single beds, and a window that opens on to the street below. The temperature was over 30 degrees during the day and 22-24 at night, but with the window open the room remained well ventilated. You can use the main room where there are sofas and chairs, and if you smoke, there is a small balcony which also faces onto the street. Sometimes there is a bit of street noise from below, but the neighborhood is a lot quieter than other places where I stayed in Lisbon (and not touristy at all). The bathroom was immaculately clean, with a shower cubicle and toilet. The kitchen has a window that opens out on to other flats at the back. A nice, quiet space to sit and drink coffee in the mornings with the sun coming in. The review would not be complete without mention of Maria's very small and companionable dog, Taka, who is truly lovely and barks only when you are outside the flat's door!
As for things to do, the area is close to Belem. I liked the walk there, 10-15 minutes along Rua da Junqueira, although buses are available if needed which take 5 minutes to walk to. Walk in the other direction from the flat for 1 minute, and you can find buses which go all over Lisbon. There are also trams, which take you towards the town centre, about 15-20 minutes away. Oh, and at the top of the road, there is a Church, Nossa Senhora da Ajuda. Along this street on a summer evening, the tram's silvery tracks and black overhead lines are beautiful against the backdrop of a summer evening sky, the Church, and the neighborhood's old architecture and the kind of quiet street scene that is unique to Lisbon and what I love about it(URL HIDDEN)
