Looking for a simple yet unusual overnight stay in the Thuringian Forest? Then THE PREVIOUS (R)BERGSKIRCHE in Tambach-Dietharz is just right for you. From 1 July and 15 September, the very special sleeping accommodation in the tower room of the Luther Church offers you an individual retreat overlooking the adjacent marketplace. Furniture is also available in the church area to share. Enjoy a very special sleeping experience!

The space
The largest and busiest of the Her (R)bergskirchen locations, the town of Tambach-Dietharz, offers the best space for a retreat. The Luther Church on the small market square has a turbulent history. This is reflected in the collage of various architectural styles that characterize the appearance of the church: the oldest construction phase of 1350 is still recognizably reflected in the lower floors of the tower made of natural stone, while the upper part dates from 1883. A series of fires destroyed the church and caused it to arise again and again. It has been a community centre since 1976. Martin Luther himself visited the church on the way back from the meeting of the Protestant princes in Schmalkalden in 1537. In the centuries-old tower is also the small, cozy room for overnight guests. The simple, bright nave serves as a place to stay. The church benches are mobile. So there is the possibility to create a very own sense of space with the available tables and stools specially designed for the project. Toilets and a kitchen are available in the basement of the church. The shower in the nearby "Haus des Gastes" reaches guests 24/7 with a short walk through the neighbouring spa park. On the way back, you can then reflect on the restful night in the tower claw in the Meister-Eckhart Park, dedicated to the medieval mystic born near Tambach-Dietharz.

Neighbourhood highlights

In the HER (R)BERGSKIRCHEN Thüringer Wald you can stay overnight with a fantastic view of the church sky and is an unforgettable experience for travelling individualists.
With an opening of sacred rooms that is exemplary for the region, unused churches along the Rennsteig hiking trail are rediscovered as places of everyday encounter. The HER (R)BERGSKIRCHEN see themselves as a ‹door opener› for further exploration of the region and create a new tourist special for the Thuringian Forest. The aim is to connect guests with the diverse offers of the regional natural and tourism landscape as well as the local actors through the possibility of a very special and individual sleeping experience. Finally, new usage perspectives and support models for the preservation of church buildings are tested, and new impulses for social and democratic coexistence in the region are also provided.

A first pilot project of HER (R)BERGSKIRCHEN was initiated in 2017 by the congregation of Neustadt am Rennsteig and architects from Berlin, Leipzig and Vienna. The idea came about in the context of a competition, sponsored by the Evangelical Church in Central Germany (EKM) and the International Building Exhibition (IBA) Thuringia. Based on the pilot project in Neustadt am Rennsteig, a future-oriented development approach for the entire region has grown in recent years, to which other municipalities have joined. The HER (R)BERGSKIRCHEN Thüringer Wald is an official project of IBA Thüringen and is supported with funds from the Evangelical Church in Central Germany (EKM), the European Regional Development Fund (LEADER), the State Tourism Programme of the Free State of Thuringia, the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy and the Federal Cultural Foundation.
