Our experience was excellent from the time of the booking. Francesca was incredibly responsive by email, helping us out with lodging and activity ideas in Antigua, and booking shuttles and boats for our trip to the Lake. The setting of the house is gorgeous. The view is unbelievable. The gardens are beautifully tended and there are limes, oranges and papayas growing among the flowers. There were no bugs at all in March. The house is great and was perfect for me and my three adult kids. The upstairs bedroom is beautiful and spacious - I woke up every morning looking at the lake from my bed. The second bedroom was cozy and quiet and my son slept in the bed tucked in to the living room area. It was very clean and well maintained. The kitchen is well-equipped with pots, pans, plates, utensils but check with Francesca about what else to bring, such as aluminum foil, plastic bags, paper towels, etc. She did recommend that we buy groceries in Antigua which was great advice. There is a decent-sized supermarket there but it's also possible to get groceries in Pana. You can't just run out and get something that you need - or run out and grab dinner - so you need to be stocked. Do not forget flashlights. The paths from the house to Santa Cruz would be impossible to negotiate at night without them. The looseleaf notebook provided at the house is a big help with where to go and how to get there. Be prepared to haggle for almost everything. Boats are pretty easy to get from the Paxanax dock which is very close to the house. You will have to wait sometimes but can flag a boat down going either direction. Or walk over to Santa Cruz (10-15 minutes on a rough path) and take a boat from there. We had fun visiting the hostels and restaurants within walking distance and especially liked Isla Verde, La Iguana Perdida and I would really recommend Los Elementos Spa and Adventure Center for paddle board and kayak rental and especially Elaine's amazing massages. This is a peaceful place with a relaxing vibe. There is plenty to do during the days but there is nothing going on at night as the last boats leave the villages at 5 (you can get a private boat but it's expensive.) We are hoping to return and would love to stay here again!

Response from Francesca:
Thank you for your long and informative review and we really appreciate your comments and suggestions. Good-quality pillows, sheets etc are really hard to get here in Guatemala - only possible in the capital and even there limited! I just bought some new sheets, so I fear they didn't get used - so I will look into this. I also have new pillows, as I know the current ones are not up to standard, even though they are relatively new! We have been wondering about the lighting situation, so thank you for commenting on that; we will now try to improve the whole living area lighting situation. Thank you for that suggestion! The kitchen sink area is more major and something we plan to look into once there are some funds to be able to do this. Again thank you though for bringing it to our attention. Along with extra keys, another good point! We very much hope you will all return again soon! So sorry we couldn't find the teddy bear - did you find it?!

Santa Cruz is a beautiful area of Lake Atitlan. The house was very appropriate for the area. Francesca was very helpful with coordinating arrival time and setting up boat transportation, as was Pascual who helps with the house.

I'm from the UK, but live in Guatemala now with my El Salvadorian partner/boyfriend. I have lived in various parts of Guatemala on and off for nearly 20 years, but permanently in Panajachel, Lake Atitlan for over 8 years.
I have been lucky enough to have travelled all over the world on a shoe string, but it was to Guatemala that I kept on being pulled back to, like a magnet! It is now my home.
I love to be able to share the wonders of this amazingly varied and fascinating country with others.
Be warned, once you come, you may never leave!
