With its own beachside garden and breathtaking uninterrupted views of the wildest of Essex creeks and marshes, the cottage is only to be reached on foot atop a sea wall. The perfect retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The last in a row of westerly facing cottages, perfect to watch the evening sun go down . From the front garden or even laying in bed, watch the tide slip in and out, the fishing boats come and go and live, for a while, in a world moving at a slower pace.

The space
VIP * The upstairs is reached by quite steep wooden stairs and the loft bedrooms have low ceilings but stunning views. The only toilet is downstairs. The cottage downstairs is largely open plan with the main living areas merging. However you can see the sea and the state of the tide from almost everywhere. Wooden floors and high ceilings and plenty of light. The downstairs front windows are one way during all but the darkest of days so you can see out but it is hard to see in. (Please note that when it is darker outside than inside the one way property of the windows is negated)

Where you’ll be

West Mersea, England, United Kingdom

Mersea Island lies 9 miles south of Colchester (50 minutes by train to London Liverpool street) and is reputedly the most easterly inhabited Island in the UK, sitting in the estuary created by the rivers Colne & Blackwater. Mersea is a tidal island becoming separated from the mainland when the sea floods the single access causeway, The Strood. (Check out Strood cam to see if you can cross) Mersea has been famed since Roman times for its oysters which are still grown and harvested from the local creeks. The famous Company Shed seafood restaurant is a 2 minute walk away from the cottage. Being surrounded by the sea and tidal mudflats has made Mersea a favourite destination for yachtsmen, sea anglers, bird watchers and photographers alike.
