The Boathouse is a modern take on a Robinson Crusoe beach shack. It's on the water's edge of a tropical garden oasis. You can cast away from big city or island bustle, beachcomb miles of Shela Beach. It is solar powered & wifi connected. A private ensuite bedroom with an open air bathroom plus a separate living & dining area. The B&B rate includes linen, daily cleaning, Lamu style breakfast on the terrace. Watch dhows sail by, plan your day, explore, work or relax. Chef Service is available too.

The space
Safari camping at the beach with Robinson Crusoe inspired living. Carbon neutral, Eco style, using plenty of recycled local materials & local craftsmen we have sought to make the traditional Swahili Fisherman's camp modern. Not quite 'glamping', but definitely not basic. Local dune palm matting, palm leaf thatching, Mangrove pole walls make the structure. A queen size bed with mosquito net, cupboard space, a work desk with a view and all ensconced by local billowing fabrics. Coconut lamps are powered by solar. Water is from our well. The bathroom is ensuite & open air, with private flushing toilet, a locally made basin and a warm rainfall shower, great for that escapist feeling. Adjacent to the bedroom is a chill out living area and a dining terrace. Out the front you are steps away from a good morning swim on a high tide.

The Boathouse is on the edge of Shela Village, and Shela is on the edge of what we all love about Lamu Island, the long beach, 12 kms of beach, skirted by sand dunes and almost deserted. Dhows (sailing boats) are the traditional mode of transport, great for fishing, snorkelling and especially for sailing as the sun sets - this is great fun; pack a few drinks and some snacks. Motorised boats plus windsurfing, kayaking, are available locally. Beach side restaurants and cafes dot the village, and you will find a fantastic bar and restaurant at Peponi Hotel, Kijani House, or Majlis. We will bring you some of the local fare from the morning street side bakeries for breakfast. But chai in the afternoon at the cafe on the Sea Souk with a sweet local treat of sim sim or labania. Shopping in the village is great, stop by Aman and visit all the other shops in the square. Head to Lamu town for a busier, big town experience.

Born & raised in Kenya, I have been holidaying in Lamu since I was a small boy. My father Brian loved Lamu and bought a beach house in Shela in the sixties.
