A house with a bedroom with a queen size bed (120x190cm) with a double layer IKEA duvet in a lovely house on the hill in the Shola area of Addis Ababa (behind British Embassy). An extra mattress is available if traveling with a friend.
Beautiful garden with a view of the city. The bathroom is shared with the owner, there is a living room and a fully equipped kitchen that you can use.
The veranda and the garden are perfect for relaxing. Lounging chairs are available. And if you are a bird watcher, you will love this place, we have white eyes, speckled mouse birds, chats, lovebirds, bulbuls etc.
There are three dogs in the compound but they are NOT allowed inside the house.

Free laundry services are available ONCE a week (except during severe water shortage periods), but due to cultural norms, the guest are required to wash their own underwear :-)
Bed sheets, towels and soap are provided.
In the rainy season (2nd half of June, July, August and 1st two weeks of September) it can take a while for clothes to dry, up to several days.

The house is off the main road, on a hill. About 5-10 minutes walk from the main road (faster on the way down the hill)
Local minibuses to Arat Kilo, Piassa, and the other way to Shola and Meganegna are available regularly. After 9 pm it is advisable to return with a contract taxi for safety reasons, especially if you are carrying valuables.

A reliable and reasonably priced contract taxi is available in the neighbourhood.
Airport pick ups can be arranged at extra cost of 15 dollars with a reliable local company (arrivals possible from 6am until 10pm - if your flight is arriving late at night I suggest you book a guest house room for the first night and arrange a pick up with them, I can advise you on reasonably priced guest houses in town ). Consult with me about check in time at least a day before arrival.
Random taxi from airport is also possible, but unless you have very good bargaining skills you'll pay at least 20 dollars and they will struggle to find the house.

Local shops are available at the bottom of the road and a house guard can be sent to do your basic shopping for you at no extra cost.

The neighbourhood is safe and friendly.

the owner is a seasoned Ethiopia traveler and can provide information about traveling around the country. Bradt and Lonely planet Ethiopia and Somaliland guidebooks are available (not the latest editions though). Guidebooks and other books can be borrowed from the house, but please return them for other guests.

Local food can be prepared if ordered in advance.

We can arrange an Ethiopian coffee ceremony in the garden for no extra cost (only on weekday and between 10am and 2 pm and only during dry season.)

I can help arranging local SIM card, if told well in advance.
Internet access with a wifi router is available, but at extra cost, as internet is very expensive in Addis. Charge cards are used, so you can pay as you go. Expect to pay at least 5 dollars a day, for basic e-mail and browsing use. Also, very important: I CANNOT guarantee internet will be working at all times as it is extremely unreliable.
There are hotels near by where you can browse the internet for free (or at a cost of a drink).

Guest access

Kitchen has a gas stove. All pots and pans, cutlery, dishes, etc you may need. Fridge with a freezer compartment.
You can help yourself to food on your first morning, then please buy your own groceries. When leaving inform me of the things you're leaving behind in the kitchen or in the fridge.
You can use the whole house except my bedroom.
Bathroom is shared, so kindly clean up after yourself.

Interaction with guests

I am happy to give additional advice on best places in Addis and travel around Ethiopia.

The neighbourhood

The neighbourhood is calm and generally very safe but I don't advise walking alone after 10 pm. Not very central but close to main points of interest. As in all middle class neighborhoods there are dogs that bark at night. I provide earplugs :)

Getting around

Minibuses are available at the bottom of the road, about 5 minute walk and they run form 6.30 am to 10pm. Contract taxis are also available in the neighbourhood. I have affordable & reliable regular drivers I can recommend.

Other things to note

Guest are NOT allowed to bring people to the house without permission from the owner.

House Rules

No parties or events
Check in time is flexible

Smoking only allowed in the garden. While there is a maid that comes 3 times a week, you are requested to clean up the major mess after using the shared spaces.
You can borrow books, but you must return them.
Please take care of the kitchen utensils and dishes as most were brought from abroad and cannot be easily replaced in Addis.

Liza's place is a real germ in the busy city of Addis Ababa. The house is individually furnished, the garden just a paradise. The place recommendable for people, who know the country and know how to move in the city.

Liza's place is great. Peaceful, great location and enjoying morning coffee on her garden is priceless. Her book collection is also something else, she was great and provided all the information I needed. I highly, highly recommend her place, you will not regret it!

What a great place. A real oasis in a fabulous city. Liza was super helpful with travel advice and recommendations, even leaving us a phone to use. A thousand time better than any hotel with the added bonus of three lovely doggies to entertain us. Would recommend without hesitation.

Liza's place is cute and her staff were exceptional in helping me figure out things in the city. She did a great job helping arrange my arrival and was very responsive to my questions. Her dogs are sweet, but if you're sensitive to noise the dogs, hers and the neighborhood, do bark throughout the night.

Response from Liza:
Barking guard dogs and stray dogs are part of living in traditional Ethiopian neighbourhoods. I am truly sorry Tracey found them too loud, but I state clearly in the ad that there are dogs in the compound. My guests so far found that having the dogs in the compound to be a plus.

Liza's house is wonderful, The well organised arrival, the friendly house staff (Tadesse and Mimi) all add to the wonderful stay. This really is a home from home and to top it all off, the three dogs are so friendly that it is a real shame to leave. I will definitely book at Liza's again - the nicest place I have stayed in Ethiopia (by a long way) and I have stayed here a lot.

What a lovely home and Lisa is a great host! I also really fell totally in love with Pica, Maks and Lucy (the canine hosts) I enjoyed my stay hugely, the house is an oasis of calm and peace in Addis and is immaculately clean, well equipped and really well presented but still homely. I definitely recommend this place and the bed is the most comfortable bed I have ever slept on in Ethiopia. Excellent home, excellent location (near the British Embassy but high enough up the hill that you are away from the traffic fumes), excellent everything :)
