A charming, rambling house overlooking Kampala, Makindye Hill House offers affordable rooms to let in a green and pleasant compound with plenty of birdlife. Convenient for Kampala, but far from the city bustle, it's perfect for nature-lovers.

The space

Makindye Hill House offers the perfect escape from the city, near the city. Close enough to Kampala to be convenient yet you can fall asleep to the sound of the owls hooting, and wake up to the plaintive calling of one of our resident pair of sparrow hawks.

The room for this listing is a large double en suite room with shared bathroom sleeping 2 people. It has a six foot wide bed - so is perfect for couples - provided with classic safari style square bed nets suspended from a Mavule frame. This makes for a far more comfortable sleep than tussling with a cheap, circular bed net!

Wall to wall closets ensure plenty of hanging and shelf space, and it is further furnished with a free-standing set of shelves in dark wood, bedside table and lamp, and long mirror. Classic sketches from wildlife artist Joy Adamson are hung on the wall, and an antique Congolese crocodile carved ornament sits at the foot of the bed. The curtains and bedcovers are made with classic African 'kitenge' waxed cotton prints for that added bit of local flavour.

We have other rooms of various sizes and prices within the house, so it's best to get in touch and check with me direct.

Guest access

We have a large kitchen, spacious and comfortable living room and most importantly, some great outdoor space: a vast dining table lines the terrace and a wooden deck, its roof lined in papyrus, extends into the garden area to offer relaxed seating around a dark wooden coffee table.

Parking is ample for those that have cars, and we have a list of friendly Boda (motorcycle taxi) drivers and special hires (car taxi drivers) that know the property for those that haven't.

The gardens include a vegetable patch, which Moses tends. If you would like to buy some herbs, salads or vegetables from him for a great price, just let him know.

He takes care of the compound and rubbish, and is on hand to open the gate for you whenever you are leaving or entering the property. Lucy is our housekeeper, and she will clean and do laundry on a daily basis for you (her younger sister Nancy takes over on Sundays) - all included in the rent. Dickson is our nightly security guard, and will also open the gate for you when you return after dark. There is no curfew - we just ask that should you be returning after 10pm you call Dickson when about 5 mins away. That way, he can greet you at the gate and prevent the dogs waking up the neighbourhood when they bark at your arrival!

There is an Internet router which does not come with any data loaded - but if guests would like to buy some data to use for themselves they are welcome to. It saves investing in an expensive dongle or wifi router if you are only in Kampala a short while.

Interaction with guests

Myself and my partner live on site, in a small apartment separate from the main house. One of us is normally around most days, but we will generally stay out of your way, unless you have any questions or problems.

Other things to note

We have three friendly dogs and one cat on site. They are not allowed inside the main house - but those with allergies should perhaps consider an alternative place to stay.

I had the most amazing time in Kampala at the house where I felt like being at home. The hosts had been extremely helpful and supportive and the staff (Lucy specifically) made everything perfect. I will definitely come back here if I will happen to be again in Kampala.

Anne Marie's house has a great atmosphere with lots of other interesting guests, a great view and a good balance of social and private space. They also have really friendly and helpful staff.

I have only wonderful things to say about my stay in Anne-Marie's home. Anne-Marie was extremely easy to communicate with prior to my stay, and was very responsive to all of my questions. As this was my first time in Uganda, Anne-Marie made sure that I knew all of the necessary information well before my arrival. The home itself had plenty of room for all guests to be able to live together, but still retreat to our separate spaces when needed. Anne-Marie kindly helped me get settled to get my trip started, and the kitchen was fully stocked with all of the necessary tools to be able to prepare daily meals. The neighborhood was very safe, quiet, and peaceful. As a young woman, I felt completely comfortable during my stay even during late night returns home. The maps, and tips that Anne-Marie left in the home for us made my stay very smooth and welcomed. I commuted into downtown regularly, and it was a easy boda ride with the one of the recommended boda drivers that Anne-Marie has listed in the house manual, they were all safe, prompt, and reliable. Walking into Makindye town is a 20 min walk downhill where you can do light food shopping, grab a boda or visit the cafe or country club for free wifi. The view from the top of the hill is simply breathtaking, and sitting on the veranda during the day was the highlight of my trip. Nights can become a bit noisy with all the nature around you, so bring ear plugs if you are a vey light sleeper, but it never bothered me. Lucy, Nancy, Moses, and Dickson are the Makindye Hill dream team, and made my stay of almost 2 months so great! They became like family, and are THE reason to stay at this guest house. Highly recommended. Thank you Anne-Marie!
