The perfect getaway: cozy, away from it all, yet close to it all. Sunny, with beautiful views of Cascade and Mt. Van Hoevenberg, and a warm wooden interior. 10 minutes to Lake Placid, ski-in ski-out to Mt. Van Ho's x country ski trails (or trail run/mountain bike), minutes from High Peaks hiking, 20-minutes to Whiteface. Quiet, private, and romantic - Internet, basic TV, fully-equipped kitchen, and washer/dryer included. Hosts take care of you yet respect your privacy.

The space
Our cozy apartment sleeps two but can also accommodate a family with young children or three adults with the use of a blow up air mattress. It has a washer and dryer, in-floor heating, Wifi, TV, and small but fully-equipped kitchen (including toaster, microwave, cookie sheets, pots and pans). It is directly across the street from mountain biking, running trails, and cross-country skiing, down the street from wonderful hiking and biking (Adk Loj, Cascade, Pitchoff, Craigwood mtn bike trails), and a 10 min scenic drive into Lake Placid and Keene. Downhill skiing is 20 min. away. It is an outdoor enthusiast's paradise.

We live on Cascade Road, which is also called Route 73. It is a busy road. We are set back 200 ft. from the road, but if you are very sensitive to noise, the cars/trucks passing by could bother you.

We've recently added a fire pit and outdoor chairs to the area below the garage apartment. We've also added a small charcoal grill. We hope our summer guests will enjoy this extra space.

We live in the main house on the property, and the guest apartment will be all yours while you visit. Please note we do use the garage directly below the apartment, and we often leave early in the morning (7-7:15 am). The garage door opening does make a noise that can be heard from the apartment. You should park outside in front of the main house by the cairns on the stone wall.

We can help you find your way onto trails or into town, or if you prefer to do it on your own, we will respect your privacy. We will work to make your stay as comfortable as possible. A two-sided sheet on our notice board will guide you towards our favorite restaurants and places to visit in the area. A hiking map can be found in the apartment, as well as other flyers about surrounding activities. However, if you plan to hike some high peaks, please come prepared with map, compass, guidebook, and good gear. Our mountains are steep and weather can change rapidly.

We accept very well-trained and mellow dogs. You may NOT instant book if you have a dog - please contact me directly to make sure it's a good fit. Please do not throw poop into our trash can. Pick it up and throw it into the woods. We charge a $30 pet cleaning fee unless you choose to do it yourself and leave the place exactly as you found it. This mainly entails vacuuming the apartment and sweeping the stairs coming up. Pets are not allowed on the furniture. However, if hair did get onto the couch or bed linens, we would expect that you would wash the linens with the washer and dryer or vacuum the couch.

An air mattress and pack-n-play are provided. If you use the bedding for the air mattress, for more than 2 guests, then there is a $20 charge, unless you wash/dry the sheets and put them back in the storage bag. You are welcome to bring sleeping bags if you prefer to use those. Extra pillows and blankets are provided free of charge.

Whether here to relax indoors with a book or to explore the Adirondacks, we think you will love staying at Cascade Getaway. Check in is after 3 pm, but we can normally accommodate earlier if need be. Check out is 11 am, although again, we can normally do later if given advanced notice.

Other things to note
A few guests have had issues finding our place. We are between Draper's Acres Campground and Mt. Van Hoevenberg Cross Country Ski Area on Rt. 73 (between Bobsled Run Lane and 37 Wrights Way). We are 6 miles outside of Lake Placid, on the opposite side of the road from Mt. Van Hoevenberg. If you are sent to the ski jumps by your GPS, this is incorrect. Please travel back towards Keene for 4 miles.

David and I met in Lugano, Switzerland, where I was teaching Biology and he was Dean of Students at The American School in Switzerland. Our first dates were running (pretty quickly, on a hilly course) three days in a row. We joke that he has rarely to never run 3 days in a row since :) That said, we are avid outdoors folk, and we feel we have found a little piece of paradise living in the Adirondacks. David now works at North Country School, a very small 4th-9th grade private day/boarding school one mile from our home (Director of Admissions). Presently, I substitute teach and do a variety of volunteer opportunities, although my most important job is taking care of my family - David, Samantha, and Luca. If you visit, you'll hopefully find us home (because in addition to good food, we do love to travel). We thoroughly enjoy visitors, David speaks beautiful French and I get by (if you're from a French-speaking part of the world), and we live simply, but abundantly. One of my favorite quotes is a Real Reason quote: There are things you do because they feel right and they make no sense and they may make no money but they may be the real reason we are here; to love each other and eat each other's cooking and say it was good!
