About this listing

The Corner House is a fully refurbished, Grade 2 listed, 4 star rated, two bedroom, self catering cottage, situated in the very heart of the old town of Whitby, with fabulous view of the upper Harbour.

Please don't panic or let the large security deposit put you off, you don't pay that! I've just set it at it's highest level to cover myself in case of serious damage or theft (you hear such horror stories).

The space

The Corner House is a Grade 2 listed, self catering cottage, situated on the corner (unsurprisingly) of Grape Lane and Church Street, in the very heart of the old town of Whitby and has been awarded 4 stars by Visit England for two years running.

With this location, comes the unique selling point of there being no hills or steps to negotiate to get to our cottage, unlike a lot of properties in Whitby; which makes it ideal for families with small children or older family members. This prime position also affords the property fabulous views of the Harbour and up the Esk Valley from every room (except the bathroom!).

During the summer months you can see the smoke from the steam engines of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, as they come and go from the Station just across the river.

The cottage is surrounded by excellent shops, restaurants and pubs, although the old walls and secondary glazing mean that there is surprisingly little noise inside the property, even with all the hustle and bustle outside.

The Captain Cook museum is approximately 30 metres away from the property, so you've got a wealth of history almost literally on your doorstep and the 199 steps are just a short stroll away, as is the most famous restaurant in Whitby, The Magpie.

The cottage is family friendly with a large, open plan, kitchen/dining/living area. We also provide, at no extra charge, a travel cot (with additional mattress), a high chair, baby gate, toddler toilet seat and potty.

All bedding and towels are supplied for your stay (excluding the travel cot) and the gorgeously comfy beds, with their fabulous, oversized, duvets will be made up ready for you to climb into at the start of your stay, so you have more time to explore everything that Whitby has to offer!

The shower room has a large shower enclosure (big enough for two, should that take your fancy!) as well as a toilet and hand basin, which is a large vintage one.

There are TV/DVD's (with Freeview) in each bedroom, together with touch lamps, dressing tables and plenty of storage. They're also tastefully decorated (as is the rest of the cottage) with art and mirrors on the walls.

There is a washer/drier, fridge with freezer compartment, separate drinks cooler, ceramic hob, cast iron stove style electric fire and free Wi-Fi for your exclusive use.

If the weather isn't as good as it could be, the cottage has a TV/DVD, with Freeview, in the lounge area, together with a selection of games, books and DVDs to entertain you and the kids as well as an MP3/DAB radio/CD player for all your favourite tunes.

I don't live in Whitby (more's the pity) but will be on hand via email/text/telephone before, during and after your stay for any queries or questions you may have.

After you have booked with us, I will be in contact to provide with all of the access information you will need. I will also contact you, usually a few days before your stay with us starts, with driving directions, additional information on great eating establishments, parking places etc. but if you need anything else, don't hesitate to ask and I'll do my best to provide it.

Whitby, in April and November becomes the home of the Goths! This world famous festival attracts visitors from every corner of the UK and the globe, who come to experience a truly unique mixture of music, culture, dress and lifestyle for a whole weekend. It truly is a 'not to be missed' event, so all available accommodation does get booked many months in advance. This isn't the only thing Whitby is famous for however, as it hosts must visit festivals and themed weekends throughout the year - from soul and folk to fishing and the regatta!

Guests have access to the whole house - except the loft (but there's only draughts up there!)

Interaction with guests

I will not usually be around to greet guests but I have put things in place to ensure that you have all you need to access the property.

My cleaning and maintenance team do live in Whitby though, so are around if needed.

Other things to note

Whitby isn't a party town - things close fairly early - especially restaurants! That's what makes it so chilled out.

During busier periods it would be wise to make reservations, if you're planning on eating out, as the best places get booked up quickly.

My cottage is both my passion and my business, so I've put together the Booking Conditions outlined below, which are over and above AirBnB's rules and requirements. They may feel a little 'hard' for this 'sharing' platform but are necessary to protect you and my business.

Booking Conditions

These booking conditions (the “Booking Conditions”), which are located within the House Rules section of the AirBnB site, are between the owners of The Corner House self catering cottage (“we”, “us” and “our”) and the holidaymaker(s) who book The Corner House (the “Property”). References to “you” or “your” are references to the person making the booking (“Booking”) and all members of the holiday party.

Any Booking is subject to the conditions below. These Booking Conditions form the basis of your contract with us so please read them carefully. Nothing in these Booking Conditions affects your normal statutory rights.

1.Making your booking

1.1Before booking with us, you must carefully check all the details to ensure that you have provided the correct information, as any errors or omissions will be difficult to rectify afterwards.

1.2Ensure that you have made yourselves familiar with the Damage Deposit which applies to all bookings made via AirBnB.

2.Cancelling, amending or Curtailing your Booking

2.1If you need to cancel, amend or curtail your Booking you must write to us or email us as soon as possible. A cancellation, amendment or curtailment will not take effect until we receive confirmation in writing or via email from you. The cancellation policy described on the AirBnB site applies to your booking.

3.If we cancel or amend your booking

3.1We would not expect to have to make any changes to your booking, but sometimes problems occur and we do have to make alterations or, very occasionally, cancel bookings.

3.2If this does happen, we will contact you as soon as is reasonably practical and inform you of the cancellation or the change to your Booking. If we cancel your Booking, we will refund you any fees you have already paid to us. However, we will not be liable to refund you for any fees you may have paid to any third party in connection with your holiday (including, without limitation, fees for travel, entertainment, activities or insurance).

4.The Property

4.1You can arrive at the Property after 1500 hours on the Arrival Date for your holiday and you must leave by no later than 1000 hours on the departure date we give you. These times will also be advised by email.

4.2If your arrival will be delayed, you must contact the person whose details are given on the booking confirmation, so that alternative arrangements can be made. If you fail to do so you may not be able to gain access to the Property. If you fail to arrive by midday on the day after the Arrival Date and you do not advise the contact of your anticipated late arrival, we may treat the Booking as having been cancelled by you and we shall be under no obligation to refund you for fees already paid to us.

5.Your obligations

5.1You agree to comply with the regulations set out in any property manual provided to you and any other regulations reasonably specified by us from time to time and ensure that they are observed by all members of your party.

5.2You agree to keep and leave the Property and the furnishings, including items such as kitchen equipment, crockery and glasses clean and in good condition.

5.3You agree to not cause or allow any damage to the walls, doors, windows or any other part of the Property, nor to do anything that may be reasonably considered to cause a nuisance or annoyance to us or to any other occupier of adjoining or neighbouring properties.

5.4You agree to take all necessary steps to safeguard our property, as well as your own personal property.

5.5You agree to AirBnB recovering, on our behalf, any monies required to cover (this list is not exhaustive) the cost of any damage, loss, breakages, breaches of security brought about by your negligence, any unauthorised late check out or any additional cleaning, which may be necessary after your stay.

5.6You agree that, whilst your liability will end at maximum damage deposit amount with AirBnB, it will not end your liability with us. You therefore, further agree to pay, on request, any monies required over and above the damage deposit amount, which will be charged, at our discretion, at the full cost of replacement, including any fitting and delivery.

5.7You agree to inform the owners of any damage, loss, breakages, breaches of security or other reportable incident as soon as they occur. If there is nothing to declare, we will not request any damage deposit monies from AirBnB.

5.8You agree to ensure that each member of your party is covered by comprehensive travel insurance (including cancellation, flight delays, loss and damage to baggage and other property) and health insurance (including evacuation and repatriation coverage).

5.9You agree that you cannot allow more people to stay in the Property than expressly authorised, nor can you change the makeup of the party during your stay in the Property, nor can you take your pet into the Property unless it is shown on your booking form or detailed in other correspondence and agreed with us in advance. If you do so, we can refuse to hand over the Property to you, or can require you to leave it.

5.10You agree to allow us, or any representative of ours, access to the Property at any reasonable time during your stay for the purpose of essential repairs, or in an emergency.

5.11You agree to provide the full name and address details of the person making the Booking, along with the full name(s) of all members of the holiday party, including their age if under 18.

5.12You agree to provide the nationality of all members of the holiday party, including their Passport number if they are from outside of the UK.

5.13Entry details for the Property will be sent via an SMS (text) message on the Arrival Date for your holiday, therefore, you agree to provide a valid mobile telephone number for this purpose.

5.14You agree to ensure the security of the Property is maintained at all times and that any codes provided to you, are not communicated to persons outside of your party.

5.15You must ensure that no smoking, including any type of e-cigarettes, takes place in any part of the Property.

5.16You must ensure that no naked flames (including sparklers) are used in any part of the Property.

5.17You must ensure that no illegal activity is undertaken in any part of the Property, this includes the use of the internet.

5.18We will treat any of these circumstances as a cancellation of the Booking by you and we shall be under no obligation to refund you for fees already paid to us. We may also refuse to hand over the Property to you, or require you to leave it.

6.Complaints

6.1Every effort has been made to ensure that you have an enjoyable and memorable holiday. However, if you have any cause for complaint, it is important that remedial action is taken as soon as possible.

6.2It is essential that you contact us if any problem arises, so that it can be speedily resolved. It is often extremely difficult (and sometimes impossible) to resolve difficulties properly unless we are promptly notified. Discussion of any criticisms with us whilst you are in residence at the Property will usually enable any shortcomings to be rectified straightaway. In particular, complaints of a transient nature (for example, regarding preparation or heating of the Property) cannot possibly be investigated unless registered whilst you are in residence.

6.3If any complaint cannot be resolved during your holiday, you must write to us with full details within 28 days of the end of it.

7.Our liability

7.1Our maximum liability for losses you suffer as a result of us acting in breach of these terms and conditions is strictly limited to the total fees you have paid for the Booking.

7.2We shall not be liable for any losses which are not a foreseeable consequence of us breaking these Booking Conditions. Losses are foreseeable where they could be contemplated by you and us at the time your Booking is confirmed by us.

7.3Your Booking is made as a consumer, for the purpose of a holiday and you acknowledge that we will not be liable for any business losses howsoever suffered or incurred by you.

7.4We shall not be liable to you for any personal injury or damage to, or loss of, personal property, except where the injury, damage or loss is caused by our negligence.

7.5This does not exclude or limit in any way our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence or for fraudulent misrepresentation; or for any matter for which it would be illegal for us to exclude or limit, or attempt to exclude or limit, our liability.

8.Law

8.1The contract between you and us is governed by the law of England and Wales and we both agree that any dispute, matter or other issue which arises between us will be dealt with by the Courts of England and Wales.

8.2We reserve the right to take appropriate legal action any recover costs associated with non payment of monies requested in relation to breaches of any of the conditions in this document, especially sections 5.5, 5.6 and 5.7.

9.General

9.1You may not transfer your Booking or any rights and responsibilities under these Booking Conditions to any other person, without our prior written consent. If at any time any part of these Booking Conditions is held to be unenforceable for any reason under any applicable law, that part shall be deemed omitted and the enforceability of the remaining parts shall not in any way be affected by that omission.

9.2We reserve the right to take appropriate legal action to recover costs associated with any damage, loss, breakage or additional cleaning, as outlined in the 'Your obligations' section of these booking conditions; where payment is not made on request.

9.3These Booking Conditions, together with all AirBnB policies constitute our agreement with you and supersedes any previous agreements, arrangements or discussions.

This is a lovely little cottage in a fabulous location. Despite being in the middle of the action it was really quiet at night and we slept really well in the comfy beds. Nichola was a fantastic host, with great communication from the outset and loads of helpful recommendations of what to do in Whitby. The house was immaculate and had a spacious feel for a town house. We would definitely recommend Whitby to anyone, and certainly stay at the Corner House.

Nichola is an amazing host. She provided us with so much helpful information prior to our stay. The Corner House is beautifully done. It has everything you need for a great stay in Whitby. It is centrally located so you can park the car and walk everywhere. Nichola has thought of and provided everything you will need. She should win AirBnB Host of the Year! :-)

The corner house was a delight. Very well located for both sides of the harbour and just a five minute walk to the beach so great for morning walks. The house was warm and cosy and very clean. It is very well maintained. It was exactly how it was described. I arrived late but this was no problem as the property has a key safe for which Nicola text me very clear instructions. There was a folder with everything I needed to know about the house in it. It was lovely to undraw the curtains the next morning and be greeted with a gorgeous view of the harbour right in front of me. I would definitely stay here again.

This is the best cottage I have stayed in in my many years of visiting Whitby. It has been decorated and fitted out to a high standard. There was nothing I could fault about it. It is a perfect size for 4 people (just 3 when I visited) and everything on your doorstep. I parked in the car park 1 minutes walk away for £2 and then after unpacking drove down the road, past the Fleece pub and left my car for the duration for free. Then did the same when leaving. Nichola told me everything I needed to know and has been a great host! We will definitely be returning. We ate out at The Magpie and The Marine, both excellent fish restaurants.

Corner House is in a great location in the most interesting part of Whitby. It is very clean, comfortable, cozy, well equipped and Nichola has obviously put much TLC into its decor. An excellent base for a Whitby holiday. Highly recommended.

Wow, describe myself! I've recently quit my job to work on the house full time, together with sorting out my own house - which I'm currently in the process of totally refurbishing (as well as living in it at the same time!)

My husband and I decided to purchase The Corner House after falling in love with it and feeling truly sorry for the very poor state we found it in. After 5 months of totally stripping it and starting again, we opened our doors in August 2014. We also wanted to have something by which we could honour and remember our respective parents, who's unfortunate and untimely deaths were the inspiration for this cottage.
