About this listing

More than a room, you have courtyard, living/dining room and kitchen access with complete privacy. This house is in a safe, quiet neighborhood that is less than a 10 minute walk to The Jardin or 5 minutes to the Instituto. Large, quiet & private with en-suite bathroom, 1 King or 2 Singles. Maid service, courtyard with fountain, new linens & Wi-Fi. Fruit, yogurt and oatmeal breakfast included.

The space

Extremely rare in SMA, Casa Encantada de Los Gatos (House of the Charming Cats) is a single-level house with only two steps down to a quiet flower filled courtyard.

The location is ideal: Centro (maximum 10 minute walk), the Instituto Allende (5 minute walk) and the Jardin (an easy 15 minute walk).

This is a nicely sized room that is separate from all others, providing complete privacy. The room can be made up with one King Bed or two Single beds (with new and correctly sized linens). I have tried to meet all your needs by furnishing it with new pillows, a coffee set, small refrigerator and a large flat screen TV with American and Canadian broadcasts in English. There is an en-suite bathroom with shower and another 1/2 bath just across the hallway for your use. Inside your room, you will find new cabinetry, a built-in desk, and Wi-Fi.

A maid is available before noon to iron clothes. After noon, you will have access to the iron and board. There is also a laundry just around the corner if you want to have any clothes cleaned and ironed. They are very reliable and reasonable, charging by the kilo.

Guest access

Much more than just a room, you have full access to the courtyard and dining/living room areas. In regards to the kitchen, the maid can help you with any special meals and you are welcome to use the microwave oven.

I urge you to use the courtyard for that much needed afternoon siesta or glass of wine. After all your sightseeing and before you set out for your various night time activities (dinner, a concert or an art opening), I can pretty much guarantee you will need to recharge your batteries a bit. Of course, if you choose, you are more than welcome to just ¨hang out¨ in the courtyard during the evening.

A chaise lounge with a built in umbrella is available for relaxing in the courtyard and I can tell you from personal experience, it is the perfect place for reading or catching up on your emails.

Interaction with guests

I will be available if you want, or if you prefer, I will let you do your own thing. SMA is an amazing town and I would love to provide you with some ideas and options to make your visit exceptional.

I love to cook and know many travelers would enjoy the chance to learn how to make a Mexican Specialty, such as traditional Chili Verde or Chili Relleno´s. If this is of interest, please let me know in advance and we can work out the details.

Other things to note

As you can see from the photos, local artists (both trained and graffiti) have made this house VERY colorful. There are murals in the entryway and courtyard and the room has been decoratively painted and contains Mexican artwork.

Upon arrival, you will receive a welcome basket containing water and fruit. Your room will also have an array of travel magazines, street maps and tour pamphlets. I can also help you arrange any activities that are of interest.

Casa Encantada de Los Gatos (House of the Charming Cats) gets it´s name from the three cats who believe they own the house. There is Vito (a Ragdoll), Luigi (a rescued Norwegian Forest Cat) and Frida (a Mexican street kitty that I rescued when she was just 3 weeks old). So for those of you who had to leave your 4 footed family members at home, this is the perfect place to get your Kitty Fix! They love people and will probably want to get to know you, so be prepared for some kitty curiosity.

The large shower has new hardware, providing a stationary head and wand. I have installed a Purified and Pressurized water system using Solar-Water-Heating.

A maid is available until noon to serve breakfast and provide cleaning services.

If you are thinking about coming for Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead), November 2, please note that I ADORE this Holiday and will probably be hosting a Make Up Party that you are encouraged to attend!

Excellent place to stay in San Miguel! Mellissa's house is well located, it is 10 min. away from downtown and it is in a calm neighbourhood. The bedroom is big, cosy, clean and it has everything you need to be comfortable. Mellissa is an excellent host, she is a really nice person! She can give recommendations on what to do and where to go in San Miguel.

We spent three nights at Mellissa's in mid-May and had a very nice stay. Everything was as expected based on her listing. We didn't get to meet Mellissa, who was out of town, but were greeted by her boyfriend upon arrival. The room was comfortable, clean, and with all amenities as listed (also looks just like the photos). Enjoyed the morning breakfast of fresh fruit in the courtyard. As is often the case when traveling, we made use of earplugs and eye masks when sleeping. The room is on the street and though there is very minimal through-traffic, there are of course sounds from the neighborhood as well as light from street lamps. The ceiling fan was very useful at night as it was quite hot while we were there. Everyone in the neighborhood was friendly. We walked daily to the center of town (15 to 20 minutes depending on the destination, slight uphill on the way there). Walked home at night and felt safe. Mellissa provided a binder of useful information regarding her home and the city. This is a great place to stay if you want to be near the center but be able to retreat to a quiet place at the end of the day and also get a feel for the town beyond the touristy center.

We loved our time in Mellissa's home! Mellissa is a great host. She is so warm and helpful; took us in like family. We arrived late in the evening before Good Friday due to delay in our trip, to help us out she even cooked dinner for us which is delicious! Her place is really well set up, beautiful and comfortable. It has everything a traveler needs! The location is great, quiet, safe, and just a short walk to everything. We also enjoyed just hanging out in the courtyard during the downtime! We cannot recommend Mellissa and her place more!! Will definitely come back next time in SMA!

Melissa's room was a wonderful place for us to stay for a week in San Miguel. It looks as good in person as it does online. We were very impressed by the beautiful wall paintings, both in our room and in the hallway outside of it. The room was large enough for my wife and I to spread out comfortably. Everything was very clean and there was lots of closet space and places to hang our clothes. The bathroom had a shower that was heated by solar panels and there was plenty of hot water. Melissa's maid Marisol provided delicious breakfasts when we needed breakfast. Melissa's home is very well located and only a 5 - 10 minute walk to restaurants and the central Jardin. One unexpected bonus - we were there when hundreds of indigenous dancers come to town to dance in the Jardin. One of the troupes had their in-town base just around the corner and we got to see them as they prepared and practiced and then danced to the Jardin. It was quite memorable. Also, our travel schedule was such that we were ready to check in before noon and Melissa was able to accommodate us. This was very helpful to us. We highly recommend Melissa's.

We really appreciated the abundance of nice towels and washcloths. (A rarity in Mexico)!!!! Melissa left us a basket of apples, granola bars and bottled water. The in room coffee pot was equipped with real ground coffee! Plenty of hangers - that's always a treat! The breakfast of Greek or flavored yoghurt, with fresh cut fruit and granola was good.

I am originally from Southern California and have lived in SMA for almost 4 years. I love to entertain so I figure renting out this room will help serve that purpose, plus I will get to meet some amazing people along the way! I really want you to love my adopted city as much as I do and would love the opportunity to help ensure your trip is a complete success.

I have done quite a bit of traveling within Mexico and should be able to help you decide upon other destinations here. Croatia is one of my favorite destinations in Europe. Banff is probably my favorite city in Canada, but there are so many beautiful places on both coasts and in-between, it is a hard call. I haven´t yet been to Australia or Asia, but my fingers are crossed.

I am a Valley Girl raised on good old Rock and Roll, but I tend to have fairly eclectic tastes in music, depending on the moment. This was one of the big draws for me to move here, because on any given night, you can pretty much hear all types of music: Rock, Jazz, Salsa, Show Tunes, Classical, Choir, Cuban and too many others to name.

I am a pretty laid back person, don´t worry about much and avoid drama and tribulations at all times (mi casa es muy tranquillo - my house is very calm) . My goal is your comfort and happiness. Hopefully you will be like so many of us Ex-Pats here in SMA, and will be returning very soon.
