Large Studio – Walk to Town

During the pandemic, please do not contact me about a short 2-3 night reservation. I'm keeping it open for potential longer reservations that are really a perfect fit. I will resume having shorter reservations at sometime in the future.

IMPORTANT: Please read the full description about the eco-friendly policy before inquiring and click the "CONTACT HOST" button, rather than make a reservation. I will respond very quickly to your request. Please let me know what laundry detergent you normally use when you inquire. Please read our eco-friendly policy below– this Is to help me make sure that we are a good fit, before accepting the reservation. Thank you for your consideration!

Longer-term reservations
Please feel welcome to contact me for longer-term reservations for one person only. I often host visiting professors and students from Smith College for the semester/year or the Smith Social School during the summer. I have a preference for longer-term reservations of three days or longer and I often do not accept requests for reservations for only two nights very far in advance. I normally wait until the calendar starts to fill up and then can add some shorter reservations for only 2 nights. Thank you for your understanding around this!

Longer-term reservations are for one person, accommodating up to three persons is for shorter reservations and not practical for longer-term reservations.

WE ARE ECO-FRIENDLY
This is an eco-friendly space designated, dedicated and maintained for people who are looking to avoid harsh chemicals in cleaning products and the environment. The host is sensitive/allergic to commercial laundry products and fabric softeners and is dedicated to maintaining an eco-friendly space for others with the same needs or an eco-friendly lifestyle.

If you do use natural products and no essential oils, this will likely be a great fit. It will save a lot of back-and-forth, if you let us know right away what laundry detergent you use. This request is not about doing laundry while you are here (we are happy to provide detergent!) Please feel free to ask any questions around this, because we don't want to miss an opportunity to host you. Thanks for your consideration! Please see more info about this in the description below.

WELCOME
Welcome to a slice of European hospitality in one of the hippest towns in America! This is a place where artists and writers can find inspiration or scholars can research. Here friends and family can come for weddings, graduations and other milestones and enjoy a beautiful setting to compliment their celebrations.

This is a spacious 280 ft.² room with a queen sized bed and a private bathroom in an 1885 historic Queen Anne Victorian house amidst a beautiful garden with winding stone pathways and terraces. A chair makes into a comfortable single bed.

It is a short walk to downtown Northampton and Smith College campus and ideal for parents, family members and alumnae visiting the five colleges here in the Pioneer Valley. Close to hiking and bicycle trails. Also perfect if you are coming to the Valley to do a workshop or training, looking for a house, or for a few months to work or study.

A 7 min. walk takes you to town and about 40 restaurants and many galleries and performance venues. The neighborhood Is all around wonderful with stellar community participation and commitment, and has a number of writers, filmmakers, and artists.

The gardens are permaculture-based with many native plants and trees from apples, pears and blueberries to bamboo, yucca, dogwoods, sweet ferns, herb garden and perennials. Behind the neighborhood and beyond you can walk to an Audubon sanctuary.

We will have some simple breakfast items (granola, almond milk, fruit) on hand for the first week of your stay. There is a great selection of teas and coffee, and you are welcome to keep your favorite yogurt, granola/cereal, snacks and fruit, restaurant leftovers, etc. on a shelf in the refrigerator and a shelf. Whatever you bring for breakfast, I am happy to provide a beautiful setting, but I prefer minimal use of the kitchen for short stays. We also offer a beautiful place in the garden to eat next to the water garden on a large stone terrace in season. Please feel free to ask about cooking for longer stays.

OUR ECO-FRIENDLY CHALLENGE
The host is sensitive to commercial laundry products , fabric softeners and conventional dry cleaning solvents and is dedicated to maintaining an eco-friendly space for others with the same needs or an eco-friendly lifestyle. If you happen to be making a reservation far enough in advance, our eco-friendly challenge is to become eco-friendly before you arrive by changing to an eco-friendly detergent that is designated "free and clear" like Seventh Generation well before you come.

In order to maintain the eco-friendly standard, all bedding is line dried to keep it as fragrance free as possible and this is quite labor intensive. If you shop at Whole Foods Market, Trader Joe's, co-ops, natural foods or other similar stores you are likely to be aware of this issue. Thank you so much for your consideration and with that in mind, we would love to host you and offer a very unique experience. Please feel welcome to ask me any questions regarding this, because I would love to host you, if we can make it work.

We look forward to hearing from you!

A blog post from my daughter:

Growing up in an Urban Oasis

It’s a rare and wondrous thing to grow up in a house where you are a quick walk from the center of town and at the same time watch bears and rabbits pass through your yard. The blueberry bushes, water garden, lush flower beds, and fruit trees make the gardens that surround the main house and studio an informal sanctuary for animal visitors. As a child I loved climbing the apple tree like the squirrels and watching the frogs gather on the lily pads. The old apple tree fell over a decade ago, but with half of its trunk still firmly rooted it continued to produce blossoms and fruit, and attracted more animals with its bounty more accessible low to the ground. There is something especially magical about seeing a skunk sneak through the underbrush or a wild turkey dart across the grass in a place that is far from remote or wild.

I grew up in a house with spanish cookbooks and Barcelona style decor and design in a town teeming with restaurants and writers, music and multicultural events. The house itself is a classic Queen Anne Victorian with stained glass windows, turreted roof, and quartered oak floors. It has always been a home for the meeting of cultures—New England architecture and European food, furniture and art books. In the studio space I watched a Shakespeare company rehearse, listened to a local reggae group perform one night, and a poetry reading another. Home was both cosmopolitan, and a place where I could pick blueberries and write quietly by the edge of the water garden.

Having traveled and lived in other places now, I realize even more what a unique and beautiful thing it is to be located in the heart of a town so full of exciting events and artists, in a house that feels international and at the same time is itself a kind of calm oasis. The tall trees separate the house and garden from the road, and make the yard and water garden feel like a world of its own.

Guest access
You will have access to the gardens, the living rooms and dining room area. You will have limited access to the kitchen, but feel welcome to make any requests for my consideration. See further description.

Other things to note
Moderate cancellation policy – please note that I am able to alter the dates depending on availability, but only you can cancel from your end up until five days before the reservation. I am not able to do it from my side, as I would lose my superhost status.

I was a dancer and traveled extensively all over the world and based myself in Barcelona, Spain for almost 10 years where I appeared in 40 television commercials. I also had an antique shop and art gallery in the fishing village of Cadaques where Salvador Dali and many other famous artists have lived. Many of my friends were architects, designers and artists. I have also spent a lot of time in Kauai. I more recently spend part of the year in Brazil in a wonderful community where people come from all over the world. For many years I have been dedicated to making a difference in the world through a nonprofit organization I founded called Remineralize the Earth. I am passionate about nature, hiking, creating a new vision for a new Earth and sustainable communities as well as food, film and culture.
