Perfect for nature lovers, this ecological retreat beside our wildflower meadow is the perfect place to unwind. Our unique former water reserve in the grounds of our C18 wine chateau has been lovingly transformed into a 32m2 off-grid bed and breakfast suite with a king bed, shower room/toilet, private terrace and equipped outdoor kitchen. Guests can enjoy all of our other facilities including our stunning heated pool and grounds. Not suitable for children, pets or those with reduced mobility.

The space
In addition to the Bed and Breakfast rooms in the main house (see 3 separate listings) our unique water reserve, L'Ancienne Citerne, dates back to just after the French revolution. It has been recently and lovingly saved from ruin and converted into a 32m2 Bed and Breakfast suite on two floors using recycled materials from a local château. It sits peacefully in our 16 acre parkland beside wildflower meadows and guests have the use of our beautiful swimming pool in the walled ruins of the former wine cellars.
L'Ancienne Citerne, constructed from recycled and locally sourced materials, is completely Off-Grid, being powered by a 12 volt solar panel. A rainwater catchment system supplies a handbasin, a WC, and an Italian shower in what used to be the bassin of the water reservoir. The first floor has a comfortable king size bed and a hanging chair from which you can take in the view. There are USB and car charger points throughout.
There is a small terrace in front of the unit with a table and chairs at which you could take breakfast, which is delivered to you daily to meet your taste, unless you choose to eat in the main dining room.
For your own private use is a lovely outdoor kitchen, equipped with a gas plancha, gas barbecue and cooking utensils. Perfect for al fresco dining with table and chairs and parasol providing shade and shelter.
A private parking space is provided and, behind the unit and with beautiful views across the wildflower meadow, is a second private garden area with benches, a hammock and a small herb garden.
The sum is a unique, comfortable, and ecological holiday suite where you can come and leave the outside world behind.

Guest access
Guests staying at L'Ancienne Citerne are welcome to enjoy our heated pool, wander around our grounds or find a quiet corner to sit and relax. Whilst breakfast can be brought to your terrace every morning, guests are most welcome to come in and join other guests in the main dining room should they prefer. The drawing room is also available for guests' use.

Other things to note
Please note that L' Ancienne Citerne is a historic building which cannot conform to all modern norms and is therefore not suitable for babies, children, pets or people with reduced mobility. It has been renovated to a high standard using recycled and locally sourced materials. For example, the staircase to the shower room is made from cedar recovered from a friend's chateau: due to the placement of the oak floor beams, it is rather steep. There is no mains water or electricity, no WiFi, television or radio. Electricity is 12v throughout and runs off a solar panel and large battery pack. There is 4G coverage and USB and car charging points are provided in both rooms. Rainwater is collected from the roof and provides for the basin, electric WC, and is pumped to a large Italian shower. Hot water is purely by solar heating and will vary in temperature, so if you need a roasting hot shower you are welcome to use those in the main house. Fresh bottled drinking water will be provided throughout your stay and a generous breakfast basket will be delivered daily to your door. Being permanently on site in our 18th century former wine chateau, we can also provide meals, including packed lunches, on request (at least 24h notice required please). Other facilities are also available on request. If you are in a large group, please note that we also have rooms to rent in the main house (see other airbnb listings and contact us for any further details that you may require. Paul and Lynne look forward to welcoming you to this unique and charming property.

Neighbourhood highlights

We are situated on the edge of the beautiful bourg of Lusignac with its ancient 13th century Church and stunning views across surrounding countryside.
There is something very special about Lusignac; everyone who comes here comments on the peace and tranquility, the relaxing air that helps you switch off the moment you arrive...

We fell in love with this former wine chateau the moment we saw it and our daughter and son-in-law even chose to get married here in the former walled vegetable garden. There really is a very special aura here and we are delighted to be able to share it with you!

Business
An English couple, we have lived in France since 2013 and have dual French nationality. Our aim is to sympathetically restore this special old house, respecting its history and maintaining its original 18th Century features. You'll find peace and quiet here and a special ambience in the untouched hamlet of Lusignac, perched on a ridge overlooking the beautiful Dordogne countryside. Our pleasure is sharing all this with our guests.
