The space
Calypso was our believed grandmother, the dynamic teacher of Makri, renowned for her cooking, artworks and positive spirit. This stone house was hand-built in 1905 and renovated in 2021 with love and care, combining upcycled antique furniture, handmade olive wood creations and comfortable modern amenities.

Calypso 2 apartment is located on the first floor of the house, which consists of an independent apartment on the ground floor. This apartment offers two independent bedrooms, an open kitchen and dining space, a cosy living room and a modern bathroom. The main bedroom features a double bed (130x190) with distant sea view while the second bedroom features two single beds (90x200) and a wardrobe. The kitchen is fully equipped for cooking with a brand new four-ring stove, oven, fridge/freezer as well as kitchen utensils. The kitchen table overlooking the beautiful courtyard can comfortably be used as a workspace. The living room can easily sleep a child on the sofa, while offering a cozy reading corner by the old chimney. The bathroom is characterised by the stone walls and the original furniture handmade with olive wood.

Due to the ecological principles followed during renovation, the house is not equipped with A/C but every room features a fan, while the thick stone walls guarantee natural isolation and Makri’s natural sea breeze offers chill nights during the summer. For autumn/winter stays, the flat is equipped with a wood-burning stove.

Our shared courtyard is a quiet hideaway at the heart of Makri village, ideally set up for family breakfasts, lunches and dinners, olive oil tastings or even small-scale private events. The stone shapes, lush garden and romantic lighting create a truly unique atmosphere at night! The courtyard features a 12-seat “taverna” area, a wooden deck ideal for sunbathing, yoga or reading and a BBQ space with open air kitchenette. The external shower, handmade with stunning local beach pebbles is a true highlight after a hot day on the beach!

Guest access
During your stay, you will have the opportunity to taste Calypso, our award-wining, single varietal, organic extra virgin olive oil and olives of the rare, indigenous Makri variety. Make sure you book the Airbnb Experience “Calypso Organic Olive Oil Tour” to get a private tour of our olive grove and learn the secrets of four generations of olive growers.

During the summer, you will have access to our little garden of organic vegetables and herbs; during the olive harvest season (October-November), you are more than welcome to join us for a unique hands-on experience in the olive grove.

Other things to note
Your host Despoina (Nana) is a renowned cook and can prepare a series of local recipes including seafood, meat or traditional vegan / vegetarian meals upon request. Traditional breakfast can be served between 9-11am for an extra fee.

Alternatively, within a 5min walk you can get to the main square of Makri where you will find a bakery, mini market, a pharmacy, cafes and tavernas. Alexandroupoli is a 10min drive away while many beaches can be reached by car or local bus (Aghia Paraskevi, Kyani Akti, Dikella, Mesimvria). We want you to discover the very best of Thrace. Calypso rural experience is ideal for families or couples looking for off-the-beaten-track, authentic experiences and unique insights from a local family. The two apartments can be booked independently or together to host groups of friends or families travelling together.

After a fulfilling career in the banking sector and local politics, I have decided to combine my passion for hospitality and the culinary tradition of my village in order to offer an authentic rural experience in Makri, Thrace.
