I Romiti is unique accommodation, a place to come together with friends and family in an unforgettable historic setting. Immerse yourself in the tranquility and seclusion of ancient terraces and chestnut forest in the Garfagnana mountainous corner of Tuscany. There is a beautiful chapel, outdoor pizza oven, multiple outdoor dining areas and large tables for gathering. There is also a secluded salt water infinity pool and pathways to venture into the forest.

The space
The restoration of I Romiti, started in 2011 and completed in 2013, was undertaken by local craftsmen using sustainable materials and with attention to the preservation of the historic site.

8 bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms are simple with stone walls and chestnut wood floors.

Shared spaces include the chapel, mezzanine library and sitting room, foyer with a fireplace, a pottery workshop, along with an additional open floor building for workshops or yoga.

3 outdoor terraces include: a roof top space, wisteria covered terrace with long dinning table overlooking the valley, a covered area connected to the kitchen, and a large stone terrace with an outdoor oven.

There is a large professionally equipped kitchen and dining area in the old cantina with a table for 10, connected to a covered outdoor space.
I Romiti can be booked on a self-catering basis or a private chef can be provided on daily or one off meal basis.

There is a salt-water infinity pool filled from our spring nestled in the hill side and surrounded by the chestnut forest.

Sustainability has been at the heart of the approach: the mountain spring from which the monks drew their water and irrigated their crops still provides the water supply, and state-of-the-art energy and waste management systems ensure minimal impact on the environment.

I Romiti is a non for profit cultural association.

I Romiti is situated in a dense chestnut wood and at the base of the Alpi Apuane mountain range, with the National Park extending above us. The place feel gloriously isolated and wild, yet the local village is a 10 minute walk away and a cappuccino or a glass of Prosecco is never far away. It is equally great for families, holiday groups and romantic getaways - and weddings.

There are numerous beautiful hilltop towns and villages nearby including: Barga , Bagni di Lucca, Castelnuovo di Garfagnana- which all have with some spectacular eating and cultural events such as the Barga Jazz. The surrounding mountainous countryside is unforgettable.

For cultural day outings, there are historic monuments, museums and shops all within close proximity. The medieval walled city of Lucca is 35 minutes away , Pisa is 1 hr 10 minutes by car or Florence 1hr 30 minutes by either car or train.

The nearest beaches are Viareggio or Pietrasanta ( about 1 hr) and the river below can be swam in and is crowd free.

I am a glass artist and have always had a great love for Italy. I love the history, of places and people. I think it is important to restore structures in ways they retain both their architectural integrity and significance for the people that use them. Whilst loving solitude, an open sky and a good pile of logs to chop, I like to open the door to new faces and tell them the story of historic site.
