I Romiti is a unique accommodation and retreat within in converted 13th Century monastery. Situated high above the river Turrite in the Garfagnana, Tuscany's mountainous province, it is a place to find well-being and restoration in a valley of natural beauty.

The space
The origins of I Romiti can be traced back to Roman times, when it served as watch post for the Roman army. Its strategic position and perfect orientation for the cultivation of crops secured a future with roles of a very different nature. In 1214 the people of neighbouring Trassilico gifted the fertile lands and buildings, known then as l‘Eremo di San Galgano, to the hermits who had taken up residence there. Among their number, Fra Stefano became a founding member of the Tuscan hermits, who evolved into the Order of Saint Augustine. The monks built an imposing church to serve the local community, and the monastery thrived for more than two centuries.

The restoration of I Romiti, which started in 2011, has been undertaken by local craftsmen using local materials and with painstaking attention to the preservation of the historic fabric. Sustainability has been at the heart of the approach: the mountain spring from which the monks drew their water and irrigated their crops still provides the water supply, and state-of-the-art energy and waste management systems ensure minimal impact on the environment.

Guest access
8 bedrooms ( double and triple) all en-suite, some with private/shared sun terraces. Huge kitchen and dinning area with vaulted ceilings. Salt-water infinity pool nestled in hill side surrounded by a chestnut forest. Outside eating terraces overlooking the valley, converted outbuildings with yoga studio and craft workshop spaces.
Library /sitting room in private chapel, converted for use as a cinema, banqueting, party and concert space. Outdoor pizza oven. Extensive grounds for woodland walks .

Location

Lucca province- fabbriche di vallico, Toscana, Italy

I Romiti is situated in a dense chestnut wood and at the base of the Alpi Apuane mountain range, with the National Park extending above us. The place feel gloriously isolated and wild, yet the local village is a 10 minute walk away and a cappuccino or a glass of Prosecco is never far away. It is equally great for families, holiday groups and romantic getaways - and weddings.

There are numerous beautiful hilltop towns and villages nearby including: Barga , Bagni di Lucca, Castelnuovo di Garfagnana- which all have with some spectacular eating and cultural events such as the Barga Jazz. The surrounding mountainous countryside is unforgettable.

For cultural day outings, there are historic monuments, museums and shops all within close proximity. The medieval walled city of Lucca is 35 minutes away , Pisa is 1 hr 10 minutes by car or Florence 1hr 30 minutes by either car or train.

The nearest beaches are Viareggio or Pietrasanta ( about 1 hr) and the river below can be swam in and is crowd free.

I am a glass artist and have always had a great love for Italy. I love the history, of places and people. I think it is important to restore structures in ways they retain both their architectural integrity and significance for the people that use them. Whilst loving solitude, an open sky and a good pile of logs to chop, I like to open the door to new faces and tell them the story of historic site.
