The space
Converted glamping horse lorry, off-grid getaway, in own field with optional personal sauna, near Totnes, child and dog friendly.
Ruby Rose is the perfect off-grid getaway for 2/4 adults or a family
of four. The lovingly converted horse lorry is situated in its own field on a 12-acre smallholding with views across the rolling
countryside, accessed by a traditional Devon lane. But it’s just 5
minutes from the quaint rural town of Totnes and only 15 minutes from
Dartmoor and the coast.
This unique, eco-friendly glamping holiday space is completely
off-grid, with solar panels and chemical-free borehole-fed water
supply. But it has everything you need to make it your comfortable,
cosy, alternative home-away-from-home, including wi-fi, Freeview TV
with DVD player, radio with Bluetooth, instant hot air heating system,
kitchen area with gas cooker, fridge/freezer and instant hot water,
and a compact washroom with shower and eco-friendly modern compost
loo. You can even have sole use of a unique wood-fired sauna!
The living space includes a comfortable seating area in the former
cab, dining area with fold-down table and stools and plenty of
storage.
The separate bedroom has a raised full double bed, with storage
underneath, and there’s another full double bed in the space above the
lorry cab, accessed by a short ladder. This sleeping area, the
perfect hideaway full of adventure for children (or adults!) of all
ages, has a side window looking across the valley and two roof-mounted
viewing ‘bubbles’ giving a private view into the surrounding treetops.
You can make the most of the amazing valley views from two raised
decking areas: one on the side of the lorry, with double doors opening
from the living space (with child-friendly railings and gate); the
other at the back, where the original fold-down rear access ramp has
been repurposed to create an open-air balcony (perfect for romantic
evenings enjoying the amazing sunsets), accessed from double doors in
the bedroom.
Outside you have use of the whole field for ballgames and
hide-and-seek, swings and table tennis plus a unique open-air dining area where you can eat, drink,
play cards etc
The portable sauna is wood-fired (all wood supplied) and for your sole personal use, for an additional £40 per stay, payable on arrival.
There’s also a barbecue area for preparing and
enjoying al fresco meals in the tranquility of the Devon countryside.
The only sound (apart from birdsong and a soft ‘mmmm’ from the alpacas
in the neighbouring field), comes from an occasional passing train on
its way to Cornwall on the railway line at the bottom of the land.
For a true taste of country living, Ruby Rose even has its own
chickens - three feathered friends in a nearby house and run, where
(subject to nature’s productivity!) you can collect eggs for your
breakfast.
Ruby Rose is the perfect place to get back to nature without leaving
all your comforts at home - an ideal getaway to read, paint or draw,
play with the kids or just kick back and enjoy a long, slow drink away
from the ratrace.
The smallholding is called Tigley Tump and has hens, alapacas, two donkeys (Mary and Ethel), a large vegetable garden and beehives, producing eggs, fruit and veg and honey for the three permanent eco-homes on site. Completely off-grid, with its own borehole water supply, no chemicals are ever used, hundreds of trees have been planted and many areas are left uncultivated to encourage wild flora and fauna.
The alpacas are kept for their fleeces and as chicken guards and the
donkeys live there because they’re unbelievably cute - and there are
plans to train them to pull a small cart.
Ruby Rose is luxury glamping at its best - in a private field with
sole use of all facilities.
Because Ruby Rose is off-grid, supplies of power and water are not unlimited - we ask, therefore, that you don't bring a hair dryer (we provide a low-energy hairdryer for your use) or iron.
All bedding, towels, wood for the sauna and charcoal for the barbecue
are ready and waiting for you. A welcome pack is provided on your arrival.
Well-behaved dogs are welcome, but please keep them off the sofa and beds and pick up poos from the field. There is an additional charge of £20 per dog, payable on arrival.
The photos will help you decide if Ruby Rose is suitable for you and
your family - please be aware there are steps up to the front
door, a short ladder to the double bed above the cab, an open barbecue
area and uneven ground.
