Great B&B in a very good location for local bars and restaurant. There is free parking nearby between 18:30 & 08:30 which is a bonus. I would recommend Anthonys place, it is clean & comfortable

The Bastion is easy to find and there was parking on the street near by. I arrived about 21:45 but Anthony was there to let me in and show me to my room. I had forgotten my toothpaste but Anthony kindly found me some (unexpected). The bed was comfortable and you have a lock on your door and a key to the front of the building. The only slightly negative thing is that the stairs are squeaky because it is an old building (not that I noticed anyone else walking about as I slept like a log). In the morning I got breakfast in the Bastion Kitchen directly across the street. The pulled pork and egg bap was excellent and only about 6.00 Euro. I'll be staying there again next time I'm in Athlone.

Anthony was a friendly host and he made us instantly welcome. The building was fascinating and we loved the communal kitchen area. The location is brilliant - really close to the castle.

The Bastion is a fabulous place - incredibly individual and informal, and we were made to feel at home immediately by Anthony and Vinny, even though we were only there for one evening. It is ideally located near to lots of interesting places to eat and drink, as well as the town's main visitor attractions, so you don't need to walk far for its best features. The room itself was very attractive, with a good en-suite shower room and very comfortable bed. Tea and coffee making facilities are available in the shared kitchen, which is a great place to sit and relax, too. Anthony and Vinny were very helpful with advice about the local attractions, as well as information to help us in travelling to our next destination. Athlone is a lovely town, made lovelier by the welcome we received at The Bastion. Highly recommended accommodation!

Anthony was very welcoming. We loved this interesting little B& B full of character and charm. The bed was comfortable and we had a good night's sleep, although you can expect a little traffic noise. The continental breakfast was fantastic, and the atmosphere of the house is very warm and inviting, with lots of interesting books to browse and curios. The neighbourhood is very artsy and bohemian with lots of quirky little shops, cafes and pubs. We wish we could have stayed longer, and would love to go back.

This room was booked for my father John. He is 6'6" tall and 75 years old. He slept beautifully and especially enjoyed the geraniums in the window (which reminded him of his mother) and all the art house coffee table books in the lounge area. He/we couldn't have had a better time. Thanks again.

Hi I'm Anthony. I run The Bastion with my brother Vinny. Our street is named after the Royal Bastion which once occupied the street where we are.

Our house is a bit of a labyrinth inside. There's lots of history here. The world famous Irish tenor John Count McCormack often visited in the early 1900s. More recently we had Michael Jackson downstairs at The Bastion Gallery!

Our style is laid back and relaxed. We love good food and the left bank area is a gourmet district with lots of great restaurants and pubs. You definitely won't go hungry here. Ireland's Oldest Bar is just down the hill. There is music most evenings. Close by, McGuire's Bar boasts over 100 craft beers.

The beautiful river Shannon is just at the end of the street. The imposing and enormous stone castle built by King John in 1210 majestically guards the river crossing.

In 1691 the area was besieged by the armies of King William of Orange in a battle with King James for the English throne. Thirty thousand cannon balls were fired across the river in the barrage that ensued. We have one of them!

The nearby Luan Gallery hosts great exhibitions throughout the year.
