About this listing

Our spacious sunlit basement apartment was designed expressly with your comfort in mind. The apartment is sleek and open, yet warm and inviting. We are centrally located, just 3 blocks from N. Mississippi Ave and 4 blocks from N. Williams.

The space

Our spacious sunlit basement apartment was designed expressly with your comfort in mind by your hosts, two world travelers, and an interior designer. The apartment is sleek and open, yet warm and inviting. Walk or bike to New Seasons Market (Portland's superior version of Whole Foods), then cook yourself a gourmet meal with our gas stove (we'll provide cookware, spices and teas for after). Nestle into the L-shape couch and then enjoy a bubble bath in our claw-foot tub. The queen-sized bed will provide a warm and cozy respite after exploring all that Portland has to offer (and tucked under that bed is a single mattress that you can pull out to use as well). It's the perfect oasis in the heart of Portland's hippest neighborhood with a garden and fire pit to boot (we'll supply the wood).

Guest access

Guests have access to the full apartment through a private backyard entrance. Entering into the lower level of our home you’ll first encounter a spacious mud- room to hang your coats and outerwear (this is a shared space). The door to your private apartment lies straight ahead (this door locks for your privacy and you are free to store any bikes you are bringing in the shared basement space).

Once in the apartment you'll find a full kitchen (refrigerator, gas stove and oven, microwave, kitchen island, juicer, and cast iron pans), a queen sized bed, an extra single mattress, a couch and other amenities including a claw-foot bathtub. No TV. Full internet access provided.

We have a lovely vegetable and fruit garden and guests are welcome to help themselves (when in season) to fresh raspberries, blueberries, plums, kale, and fresh herbs. The backyard space has a fire pit, chairs, and table for outdoor eating. Make yourself at home! The backyard is a space that will be shared with us, your hosts. We have a very sweet and friendly Great Dane and also a 9 year-old son who likes to hang out in the yard.

Interaction with guests

We live on-site above the apartment, and are eager to greet guests and are on hand daily to help you navigate your way through Portland and the Northwest if so desired. If we're not home we are available by text, phone or email.

Your level of interaction with us is entirely up to you--The apartment itself is completely private, and while we are more than happy to socialize we also know that sometimes after all the stimulus of new vistas, quiet is what is needed. We have supplied the apartment with a book of menus, pamphlets, maps, and brochures of surrounding attractions and restaurants, for when you go out and a small book collection to enjoy with a cup of tea for when you return.

Your hosts are quintessential Portlanders, Jill works in alternative healthcare and Eric is a professional accordionist and opera composer. However, when guests are staying he abides by this dictum: "The definition of a gentleman is someone who can play the accordion, but doesn't."

We have a lovable elderly great Dane that barks for a few seconds a couple times a day and a ten-year old whose feet you might hear a little as he pads off to school in the morning. You will hear us during the day for sure as we live above you but we'll do our best to keep the noise level down in the morning.

Eric's place was a lovely basement unit that was very clean and had comfy furniture. It's also within walking distance of Mississippi Ave where they have great food and access to public transport. This place is recommended!

The Mississippi Red Apple Pie basement apartment is adorable (Well-decorated) and cozy. Loved the garden entrance and that it was tucked away and secluded. It felt like our place while we were there and Eric meet us and helped us get situated. The best part was the cache of tea and extra blankets. Eric left a handy list on the breakfast bar that has simple instructions and a list of recommended place to eat and do in the neighborhood. We enjoyed walking to Mississippi Ave and checking out the shops and grabbing food. Great all around!

Eric's was amazing. The place was incredibly clean, which I appreciated greatly. There were teas, spices, honey, books, and games there at my convenience. He was flexible with check-in. 5 star Airbnb host.

Our stay at Eric's place was really comfortable and easy. The location is perfect. Easy to walk to a variety of restaurants, cafes, shops and bars. Not far at all from downtown Portland. Eric was super easy to communicate with. He was flexible with our late check-in time and super nice during our stay, even offering us earplugs when he learned there would be a party happening next door (which we didn't hear at all during the night anyway!). So thoughtful of him though. I met him, his son and his dog briefly, and they were all lovely. I would definitely recommend as a safe, easy place to stay for families, travelers and businesspeople alike!
