Delightful Grade 2 listed cottage in a quiet and picturesque thatched Devon village in an area steeped in history and close to the sea. The house is beautifully decorated, light and comfortable with a secluded garden and country views.

The space
Although small, Batts Cottage is full of character and has been sensitively renovated into a wonderful contemporary space to make it light and airy whilst still retaining its period features. The pretty upstairs bedroom has a comfortable double bed and an en-suite bathroom with a shower. Downstairs, there is another attractive bedroom with a single bed and an additional pull-out bed. The sitting room is open plan and has a dining table which expands to seat 4. This leads through to the light and well-equipped kitchen with a door to the garden, and a downstairs family bathroom with a bath. There is a low beam in the sitting room so taller guests have to watch their head, although I am 5'11" and have no problems! The house sleeps 4 adults comfortably or would be ideal for a small family. There are lovely views from the garden which has two small areas of lawn, flower beds and a deck with table, chairs and an umbrella. The house is near the village green and situated opposite a beautiful 14th Century church. There is parking right outside the house.

Where you’ll be

Gittisham, United Kingdom

Gittisham is in the heart of East Devon in an area of great historical interest. Ottery St Mary, the birthplace of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, is ten minutes away, and the market town of Honiton with its wonderful antique shops is a five minute drive. Until recently the entire village of Gittisham was owned by the Combe Estate and because it has never been developed, still retains a unique charm. Combe House, the original family home of the Marker family which sits above the village, is now a five star hotel boasting a superb award-winning restaurant. There are many more excellent pubs and restaurants in the area including the popular Otter Inn at Weston and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's River Cottage Canteen in Axminster. The seaside towns of Sidmouth, Beer and Branscombe with their lovely beaches are all within easy reach and Lyme Regis which is part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site is half an hour away. Both Honiton and Ottery St Mary have good supermarkets and farm shops as well as many other amenities and there are twice-weekly markets at Honiton, Axminster and Bridport which are well worth a visit. Exeter with its famous cathedral, cinemas and excellent shopping is a 30 minute drive. If you are interested in walking, there are some lovely walks you can do straight from the house, or if you are looking for something more challenging, there are some magnificent coastal walks within easy reach. There are a number of National Trust properties in the area as well as Escot Park, one of the top visitor attractions in Devon.

My husband Tom and I fell in love with Cape Town when we visited 10 years ago and have been living here ever since but we still keep strong links with England and own a small cottage in the beautiful Devon village of Gittisham. We have three children, all grown up, and run our own interiors business, 'Avoova' with five shops in South Africa and a factory in the Karoo.

During your stay

I spend most of the year in South Africa so sadly will rarely meet guests, but I have a lovely lady, Laura, who manages the cottage and will be there to help in any way she can.
