My boyfriend and I were traveling from PA to Maine and we're looking for a place to stay along the way. Ken and his wife were very welcoming and quick to offer recommendations for restaurants and things to do in town. We did have to take an Uber into town, however it was very cheap and the people in the area were extremely friendly! Our room and bathroom were clean and we were able to get privacy as we were the only ones renting for the evening. Just a heads up though they no linger offer breakfast! Overall a nice stay in a good area :)!
This was my first experience with AirBnB and I have to say it was amazing. Ken and Pam are such wonderfully warm people that they instantly made me feel welcome in their home. I didn't feel like a stranger at all, but more like a part of the family. It brought back all the nostalgia of visiting my grandparents. The home they have is really beautiful. Ken has had a very interesting and eventful life (and lots of fascinating stories to go with it) and from his time as an art broker he has amassed a very nice collection of artwork that is displayed around the house. I was working most of the time during my visit so I wasn't around much during the day, but every morning we had a very nice time at breakfast. Ken even took me on a tour of the state when I had a day off. The only downsides I can think of were that the WiFi was down during my stay and the house is located near a not-so-great neighborhood. Still, I walked around alone at night and never felt unsafe so it wasn't that bad at all. All in all, I would highly recommend stay here. Absolutely wonderful people and excellent accommodation.
It's was my first experience of Airbnb and it was amazing. I have tons of experiences of different levels of hotels and family hotels. But I have to say, Airbnb is great! It gave me a chance to talk to the local people, to know their culture, which is much more attractive to me, rather than just live in a fancy hotel with extremely cold AC. Ken designed his own house. When we walked in the house, we were falling in love with the beautiful, decent decoration and the sophisticated Italinate design. Ken also has collections of painting and artwork. He was knowledgable about his collections. He's willing to share stories of each item. It made me feel like going back to 20 century and see how people lived. There are more pretty stuffs in his small library. The furniture is fascinating. I can smell the dignity and proud from old time, as well as tracking the history of Rhode Island. Besides the location is good. It's close to Brown university and federal hill. Both are about 10 min drive. lots of good restaurants are worth to go. In all the experience was good. I was glad to read all comments before I decided to go, because I would like to know the host's habit and rules. Some trouble could be caused by misunderstanding and lacking of communication. As long as the visitor and host can respect each other, it is beneficial for both sides. I am glad that we communicate very well and I would highly recommend his place.
The house was very nice and clean, and breakfasts each day made by Ken's wife were fantastic. It was enjoyable to talk with other travelers, and Ken gave us good recommendations in the area. Caveats -- The neighborhood is a bit sketchy, so I probably wouldn't stay here without a car or go running nearby. The wifi is good downstairs but too weak to really use from upstairs in the rooms. There is no kitchen access (microwave, fridge, etc). The bigger disappointment was about being nickle-and-dimed. When we arrived, we were told that our room's door hinges were broken and the door wouldn't close. I would have wanted to know this before booking. Ken offered us a different room but surcharged us $50 dollars because it was bigger. We felt a little trapped as a romantic couple, since we didn't have much of a choice but to take it. The hottub was extra as well ($15 per usage), and we were ultimately charged an additional cleaning fee as well after a miscommunication. The house is pet friendly and I made sure of it by asking before booking. However "pet friendly" isn't THAT friendly. My dog couldn't go on lots of their fancy furniture so we kept him in our room. Even then, the host didn't like us leaving him in the room without supervision and insisted we put him in a tiny kennel in the backyard. We also bumped heads when he came into the room without our knowledge and saw our dog on the comforter. He was clearly upset that we used the comforter. He claimed that it wasn't used for sleeping and it was for decoration and charged us $35 to clean it. Overall the experience was mixed, nice people, but perhaps we had a clash between a more formal/traditional bed-and-breakfast and AirBNB expectations.
