Talva loves NOLA!! Walk Hist Lower Garden Dist nearby! See Anne Rice house. Watch Mardi Gras Parades fr balcony. Enjoy popular Blind Pelican Bar .25 happy hr oysters, the Ave Pub's wide array of beers and see a BANKSY upclose. 10 min from French Quarter.

The space

This clean, light filled and cozy balcony 2 bedroom is a shared apartment with one private room dedicated for guests and the other in the back to our monthly paying resident who is very accommodating to guests needs. Talva lives in the next apartment on the same floor and is available to orientate you to the space and answer any questions you may have anytime. A very comfy roll out couch in the living area for overflow guests. The balcony where smoking is allowed, is great for people watching on the street below, on a block that is a unique mix of old school New Orleans pre-gentrification where colorful locals blend with tourists in a dignified neighborhood that feels safe enough to jog or stroll the block to Colosseum Park or walk through the beautiful majestic Garden District only minutes away and see popular tourist attractions like the wedding cake house on Prytania, or Anne Rice's famous mansion on 1st St, modeled on the Mayfair Witches is six blocks away. Magazine a busy thoroughfare, a few streets over is where the locals shop and dine. Many residents start their morning or meet up at Mojo's or High Volt, both great little coffee shops only two blocks away by Magazine and Race St. The French Quarter is a brisk 20 minute walk or 10 minute Uber ride from here through the stately Central Business District. The Streetcar, less than a half a block from the apartment can transport you to the French Quarter or all the way to Jazzfest, City Park or soon to the Bywater! If time is a concern, waiting for the Streetcar irregular timing can be maddening and Uber is advised. Yet if quaint yesteryear open air transportation is your thing, its a great loop around the city.

There is a sweet little laundromat around the corner next to a little known protected outdoor Bansky wall art. The Avenue Pub with its infamous draft beer selection and the Blind Pelican offering 25 cent oysters for happy hour and other amazing restaurants like Emeril's are all within walking distance. One of the most unique is SEED, which sources all locally grown food and offers a variety of vegan gluten free dishes. The GreenFork is right across the street from SEED on Prytania only four blocks away where you can get the best healthy smoothies around!

This area is always a colorful mass of locals and tourists traveling along St. Charles Avenue. This is the place to be during Mardi Gras not only because most of all the most popular parades roll by the apartment and can be watched from the balcony but its hard to find restrooms or get warm between parades. The apartment is so close and convenient. Yet the best factor of staying here is you get to access Talva's wide range of New Orleans History past and present. She has the resources and knowledge to truly make your visit to the big easy a wonderful unique experience that will make you wish you could stay longer and plan to return to catch all you missed.

Guest access

Guests can store food in the refrigerator, have access to the balcony to eat and kitchen facilities if needed. Snacks and extra towels, pillows and blankets are available in the rooms and closet, guest towels are hanging on bathroom wall.

Interaction with guests

We will have as much or as little interaction as needed to make guest visit a memorable and unique experience. We work during the day and attend various nightly events and live a full and varied life. We will make time to ensure guests have all questions answered as where to go and what to see. If you are really good, we might even make our famous red beans, rice and cornbread. Just let us know what you need and we will best accommodate your level of interaction desired. We appreciate clarity and honesty and give that inkind.

Other things to note

Normally we only take 5 night rentals for Mardi Gras, Jazz Fest and Voodoo Fest, 3 night minimum for all weekends and upon special circumstances we are willing to accommodate last minute one day reservations. Mid-week special rates apply of $98.

This is the place for you if you like to experience a part of New Orleans that is unique, a sliver of bohemian meets bourgeois, a lovely spot in between the bustle of the Central Business District, the stately luxurious homes of the Garden District and the gentrification of Central City across St. Charles where the history of the Civil Rights movement began…This city is amazingly fascinating and has an allure and charm keenly felt in this neighborhood.

If you are squeamish about seeing a roach or two in the building, this is not the place for you, as this is New Orleans and the building is near a busy restaurant and Burger King. We have done everything we can to bar the migration of any creepies, but there are occasional unwanted guests because they are every where in New Orleans. The big ones that fly are called Palmetto Bugs and are not roaches. You will see them crawling across the pavement everywhere and consider yourself receiving a bit of luck if one flies into you.

Check out time is by arrangement. A cleaning fee and deposit to secure the booking is required.

All though the apartment has been recently remodeled with tile floors and new fixtures and kept clean and tidy for your arrival and stay, I can not guarantee to what degree the other apartments have been updated as turn over in this building is very slow or what shared spaces of the house may reveal. This is a very old house (late 1890's) with five apartments total and the landlord has many properties within the block that are kept minimally maintained. Expect evidence of neglect, wear and tear and the laisse faire attitudes that prevail in NOLA. My apartment happens to be an anomaly and have benefitted from the new windows and brand new air-conditioning system that was installed before I moved in…which makes this apartment an oasis in the heat, hustle and bustle from the outside world.

I provide snacks, bubbly water, fruit and yogurt for your convenience. There is space in the refrigerator for left overs or groceries you may need. A food agreement with meal plan options is made upon booking to let host know how much or little preparation is needed while staying. Grocery shopping service is available to maximize your time and free you up for more experiences.

Guests must be considerate of other tenants in the building and if coming in late at night to keep noise to a minimum. TV can not be left on all night and volume down after 10 pm. Guests must pick up after themselves in the common spaces. A phone call to let me your Host know any change in previously arranged plans would be most appreciated. I value clear and honest communication. Smoking is only allowed on the balcony.

The hosts were very friendly, helpful, and fun! I loved the entrance to the balcony. It provided a charming, old-school indoor/outdoor experience as well as a view into neighborhood life. Highly recommended!

This is a beautiful apartment in a great safe location. The cat odor was a bit strong, however if you love cats it shouldn't be a deal breaker, especially as with cats came a distinct lack of bugs which was awesome. This was a prime Uber location, we never waited more than 2 minutes for our ride. Loved our stay here and highly recommend for anyone not allergic to cats.

We really like the place a lot, its very central located in the Garden District. The St. Charles trolly is 20 feet away from her place which is easy get around town. Its 20 mins walk to downtown if you like walking. just know there are couple of lovely cats there to keep you company.

Diana's apartment is in a great location, and she was a host that was easy to contact and made booking very easy. The apartment itself had a quirky, fun feel when we entered, although there was a slight smell of cat urine upon arrival. (Diana has 2 cats which we were aware of before booking). My husband and I brushed it off thinking it was likely just the litter box. As our stay lengthened, the smell of cat urine got much stronger and almost unbearable. It was so bad to the point that we only went back to shower, change and sleep. The apartment also needed to have some serious cleaning done. The floors weren't swept, the tub was badly stained and there were no clean towels other than decorative ones. I am also 6 months pregnant, and can get sick from the ammonia among other bacteria that cats carry in their feces. If we would have known we could change locations, we would have on the first evening. Lastly, when I brought this to Diana's attention upon checkout, all we got in response was "no worries! Come back again!" Umm, NO. We will not be coming back to your home. It is sad to me that she even allows guests to stay in a place this unsanitary.

Response from Diana:
Emily, this is Talva the lady that set the apartment up for you. I am terrible sorry you had such a difficult time. I cleaned the shower with ajax and I think it might have dried and left a bit of whiteness in the tub. Also, the towels that were there were not decorative they were for you to use. I do understand that the cats urine can be problematic and normally I would be there going in and out to check but I was out of town also. I see that in my absence it got a bit out of hand. Again, I want to apologized for your discomfort and wish you safe travels in the future. Thank you

While I never actually met Diana herself, her neighbor Talva helped me get settled and she was AWESOME. She's a lovely lady, and the apartment was perfect for what I was looking for- a place to keep my stuff and to sleep, as I was out in town all day and evening. There are so many fabulous restaurants around the house too, so I never had to search far to find food :) overall, a wonderful little place :)

Young at heart, mother of three young adult children, (2/3 relocated to NOLA!) and devoted to sharing the lesser known features of New Orleans with arriving guests and tourists. Arriving soon after the levies broke after Katrina hit when the French Quarter first reopened October 2005. Video documented ongoing recovery for the first four years and reluctantly returned to Minnesota for family reasons for 5 years until returning again to this magical beloved city over a year ago.

Diana is a landscape designer, urban farmer and permaculturist versed in social activism and the influential intersection of food and music on the quality of life. Hobbies are filling her balcony with plants, keeping her two young adult rescue kittens happy and content. She happily jogs through the Garden District regularly while working primarily at Harold's Garden Center in the Bywater and at the 24 Carrot St. Roch Community Youth Garden, finding delights and surprises all over the city to share with guests. Diana made memorable trips for people staying in the Backyard Ballroom PT house-managing that Air B & B location in the Bywater last year and is excited to finally open up her space for others to enjoy the benefits of the Lower Garden District and all things NOLA. Her Motto could be, "Turning lemons into lemonade, appreciating the silver in every cloud". She couldn't live without soaking in water from time to time, sharing laughter with a friend, enjoying a really excellent meal now and then, experiencing something new and making a difference where ever I am.
