The casita is a converted carriage house. It was originally a studio but we have added a small bedroom accessed through the covered patio. So it has a bit of the feel of the old Berkeley sleeping porches. The entire casita is fenced.
The casita is a converted carriage house on a unique property in North Berkeley. The main house is on a flag lot up a long driveway. The casita is a quirky private cottage on the property. It has a long history of being occupied by various family and friends. This is the first time it is being offered to the public.
Once you close the gate behind you you are in our own private world. There are two outdoor spaces to sit and enjoy nice weather. One is covered and can be enjoyed even when it is raining. There is a cozy wood stove for colder nights. There is also electric heat.
Interaction with guests
I live in the house next door to the casita. There is a fence that divides us so I may see you as you enter and exit the property but I may not be able to tell if you are home. I have two large friendly dogs that live with me.
Please do not smoke anywhere in the casita. Please be aware that the baseboard heater can use up a lot of electricity so it would be helpful if you turn it off or way down when you leave the casita. Please do not bring pets. Please do not park in the driveway. This block has no time restrictions for parking on the street.
The casita is a private freestanding structure on the same large property where I live. It was originally a carriage house and it had been converted by the time my parents bought the property in 1960. It has undergone more changes since I bought the property from my mother in 1994. The latest iteration has been accomplished reusing the original 1920's redwood doors, windows and trim saved from the main house remodel wherever possible. The complete kitchen is all new and the bathroom is modern and has a whirlpool tub. So the casita is a cozy mix of old and new. I hope you enjoy the quirky aspects of this very Berkeley home.
