The space

Ideally located between Murray Hill and Gramercy Park, is one furnished large bedroom available in a two bedroom 880 sq ft. apartment with shared bathroom. Convenience is what you will find in this elevator and 24 hour doorman building, which features wood floors, central air conditioning, laundry room and is only steps from the 6 subway line and plenty of bus lines. The location is only a few blocks away from Grand Central and Penn Station and is also very close to United Nations, NYU and Bellevue Hospitals, Langone Health Center, Parsons School, The New School, and Fashion Institute.

Private bedroom and shared bath, limited kitchen facilities. While host is home use of microwave and refrigerator are permitted until 7pm, after which kitchen is off limits.

The only reason I EVEN gave the place a 2 star is because the location of the building and the room itself were great. Room is spacious and nicely decorated, very comfortable. The building is situated in Midtown East, surrounded by plenty of restaurants, and is only a few minutes walk from the 6 train. It is a doorman building, and the doormen are all extremely helpful and friendly. Despite the positives, I found living with the host difficult and uncomfortable. I stayed there for 4 months, and could not wait to get out of there. I had tried to find another apartment, but was unable to secure a short-term lease, otherwise I would've moved out of there. The host and I communicated via text and e-mail a few weeks before my arrival, at which point the host had told me that there is "limited access" to the kitchen, and that cooking should be limited. I said I was fine with that since I didn't cook often anyway. Upon my arrival (with all my bags already moved in), she told me that the kitchen will only be open as long as the host is awake. She sleeps at around 5-6 pm, and that is when the kitchen will be closed. I was not allowed to go into the kitchen, even to retrieve water or food from the fridge. She also told me I should get a toaster and make breakfast in my own room, and that I cannot use the stove AT ALL (even though she does cook from time to time herself). The breaking point for me was when she berated me for ordering food at 11 pm (I had not eaten the whole day because I was sick, and the host knew I was unwell. When I tried to explain to her again, she said "you just cannot order food at this time." Mind you, the buzzer had only rung ONCE when I rushed to pick it up.) The next day when I confronted her, she said "I had already told you from the start that the kitchen closes at 6 pm. There is no point for me to close the kitchen if you're still going to order food and wake me up.) On top of the bizarre kitchen rule, there are also several other strict rules imposed upon the guest. The guest is expected to scrub the bathtub with a sponge and soap every single time after using it. The host will actually go and check to see if the sponge is wet to prove that the guest had done that, and will confront the guest if not. The ironic thing is, on several occasions I've come into the bathroom to see the sink covered in food bits/toilet not flushed. I have never brought this up to the host, simply cleaned and flushed it because I felt living together comes with compromise. The host was not as accepting. It appears we had some issues of communication. Per house rules, use of kitchen is off limits after 7pm, Monday thru Thursday, as my room is adjacent to the kitchen so any noise made after this hour wakes me up. I work with Europe, wake up early, and is why I go to sleep at such an early hour. Please note, I go to my weekend house Friday's and return Monday, so kitchen use during weekends are uninhibited. Regarding ordering food, I never said she could not order food, I merely asked her that if she order food after 7pm, to ask the doorman to call her cellphone and not buzz the apartment as buzzing the apartment is very loud and wakes me up. Regarding the tub, the cleaning lady only comes once every 2 weeks, and thus I ask guests to keep the tub clean in the interim, which this guest was not doing and why I brought it up. Note: if a guests wishes to have the cleaning lady come in more than once every 2 weeks, they may do so at their own expense.

Tania is a lovely lady, and a very welcoming and accommodating host! She made an effort to help me settle in, and made my stay very enjoyable. The room is spacious and clean, and very pleasant in the mornings as it receives a lot of natural light. The apartment itself is well-located, very close to the 6 train and there are a lot of food options around it. I would highly recommend Tania and this apartment to anyone looking for a longer-term stay in New York!
