My marvelous stone house looks like it was plucked up in Tuscany and set down in the rolling, "driftless" region of southwest Wisconsin. Your 2nd floor Beatles-themed guest room is comfy; kitchen, bathroom and deck have been recently updated.
Large oak and black walnut trees surround the gardens and a 1/2 acre restored prairie attract birds, butterflies, deer, and other wildlife.
30 min. drive to Madison; close to many charming small towns, state & county parks, trails, lakes, and attractions.

The space

Welcome to my historic 1860's home and your colorful, comfy 2nd floor private room with a Beatles theme! The guest room has a full-size Ikea foam mattress with memory foam topper for 1 person or 2 people who can sleep together. If you are a couple traveling with a small child, I can provide a bedroll.

There is an adjacent 1/2 bath (nothing fancy, just a toilet and laundry sink); the primary (shared) bathroom with shower is downstairs on the main floor.

The stone exterior keeps the house cool in summer; AC in the guest bedroom, and ceiling fans throughout the house.

If your family is 3 or 4, check my separate listing for my cool, spacious Art Studio, just steps from the main house. https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/7661185 More privacy, a queen and a single bed, and an additional cot available. There is no running water or WIFI in the studio, though. All guests may utilize the primary downstairs bathroom in the house, which has a nice shower and plenty of clean towels.

Good coffee or tea and bagels provided before you head out to explore the area. Mt. Horeb has good breakfast spots! Make yourself at home. Enjoy the surroundings during the day and the starry, starry night!

Guest access

This is where I live! You'll be a welcome guest in my home. Access to shared living areas (master bathroom and shower, living room, kitchen), new deck with grill, fire pit, yard, and prairie trails.

Interaction with guests

I like to greet my guests upon arrival, show you around and let you get settled. This is a situation in which you are sharing my living space. I'm gregarious, and I'm more than happy to interact as much as you'd like, but I will also stay out of your way. You can enjoy complete privacy in your room, on the deck, or strolling around the 3-acre property and adjacent park land.

Other things to note

There are many great side trips (for car and bicycle) within a 30-mile radius: New Glarus Brewery, Blue Mound State Park, Taliesin, Wisconsin Brewing Company, Cave of the Mounds, House on the Rock, American Players Theater, and of course, fabulous Madison! Kayak or canoe many local rivers and lakes. Wisconsin Dells, Baraboo, and Devil's Lake State Park are an hour away. Great area for cycling--in early September, the bike route for Iron Man Triathalon goes right by the road to my house!

A wonderful house in a beautiful location. The room has a perfect view into a bird feeder which I was memorised by in the morning. Nina extremely accommodating and I would highly recommend.

Very happy experience indeed at Nina's special, secluded, peaceful stone house. Her welcome was total and we loved her and Dale's kind, generous laid-back way of having us to stay in their home. A lot of snow fell overnight while we were there which made the house even more magical, but also confirmed Nina's exceptional care: she offered us snow shovels etc. to ensure all was well - which it was! We can't recommend this place enough. If you want somewhere special, unique with the natural world at your doorstep, and in a beautiful spot, then this is for you. We had come to visit Frank Lloyd Wright's home, Taliesin, using Nina's house as our base, and could not have been more pleased with our choice.

If you put surroundings, atmosphere, host friendliness, and peace and quiet ahead all other considerations this is the place for you. The newly updated bathroom is located one flight down from the bedroom, and meets the highest standards of spaciousness and functionality. The bathroom just outside the bedroom is utilitarian and adequate for all but the most demanding guest. These considerations are far, far outweighed by the location and availability of gorgeous hiking trails and vistas in a vast panorama of peaceful trails and streams and hills. The also don't compare with the amazingly knowledgeable and friendly hostess.

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Nina’s place. She is a warm, inviting hostess, and her home is a reflection of that. The view from her porch is beautiful, and the overall atmosphere of her home is one of tranquility. For me, it was a much appreciated peaceful respite. The location also provides very convenient access to state parks, biking trails, local towns - anything you could want for a weekend getaway. I had a wonderful time and I could not recommend a better place to visit.

I enjoyed every aspect of my stay at Nina's, including our communication beforehand, the eclectic, interesting, clean and comfortable home, the two cats, and the neighbor's horses who wandered over to the pasture just off the front porch. I also had a very nice time talking to Nina and wished I could have stayed longer to learn more about her interesting life. My bedroom was comfortable, clean and quiet.

Rustic stone cottage as described. The place was surrounded by beautiful natural surroundings. Once you settle in, you totally decompress and relax. I felt as if I was visiting an old friend. Loved getting to know Nina and her cats. The room was comfortable and the bed was especially comfortable to sleep in. Loved the way Nina makes the fresh roasted coffee. I will definitely be back.

I'm Nina (pronounced Nine-a, not Neena). I'm fun, artsy, and a former professional entertainer (juggler and performing artist). I love the outdoors: hiking, bird watching, cross-county skiing, and kayaking are my passions. I travel whenever I can, even if it's a just a weekend getaway to one of the beautiful areas of my home state of Wisconsin, or a jaunt to Chicago. I have lived in Utah, Vermont, and northern California, but I'm a Wisconsinite at heart.
One of my favorite quotes is by Ray Bradbury: "You've got to jump off cliffs all the time and build your wings on the way down."
