Girnwood Holiday Cottage is a spacious detached cottage with great views. A peaceful relaxing cosy break awaits, perfect for walking, wildlife watching or just switching off and doing nothing.
Girnwood Holiday Cottage is a spacious, detached, self catering cottage with great views. It has had some modern improvements but the kitchen and bathroom are simple in style. Bedrooms are comfortable.
We are 10 miles from the Borders Woolen Mill town of Hawick . It takes 20minutes but feels like twice as far the first time you come. It is single track and narrow roads with passing places which are challenging for some to drive with confidence. Take care as timber lorries use these roads and can be going quite fast. After more than 5 years of potholes and damage to the council road up to the farm a full reconstruction has now finished and it is smooth tarmac again. However the last 300m of farm track into the cottage is still quite rough and it is recomended to drive slowly with care.
The extensive views are of unspoilt border hills but you are close to the farmhouse where the owners live and work should you require any assistance.
There is no wifi and very limited phone signal. Access to internet can be arranged at the farmhouse. But in the Scottish Borders we call it 'super slow narrow band!!'
The cottage accommodates five people with a super king sized bed in one bedroom and a double and a single for a spacious family bedroom in the other, both are upstairs. We have 2 folding beds to use for any extra guests. Let us know if you need them on booking and we will prepare them in whichever room you wish. All bed linen and towels are provided. The spacious sitting room is warm and comfortable with a large corner sofa, dining area and log burning stove. A separate american log boiler provides central heating and hot water. All fuel is included in the price. Freeview tv, with radio, a library of books, dvds, and games (indoor and out). There is NO wifi and very little phone signal. The bright kitchen has cooker, microwave, kettle, toaster, fridge-freezer, dishwasher, washing machine and clothes drying machine. The bathroom has a large bath and separate electric shower. It is a self-catering cottage, I do provide tea, coffee and sugar but do not do breakfast. I try to keep basics like salt pepper, oil and herbs. Cleaning products are kept in a kitchen cupboard.
Interaction with guests
We always like to be around when guests arrive to give a tour of the cottage and answer any questions. We like to allow our guests privacy but are available at the farmhouse next door, if help is required.
Other things to note
Hawick is famous for knitwear, rugby and common riding. The Heritage Hub and Textile Towerhouse have exhibitions and information. There is a cinema, coffee shops, leisure centre and knitwear outlets throughout the town. The park and walled garden and museum are worth a visit. Popular places to visit nearby are Floors Castle, Abbotsford House and Bowhill.
Arrival is from 3pm and Departure is 11am and it is helpful if you can give us an expected time of arrival. We are very flexible on this as long as you are aware cleaning may still be in progress. We welcome all pets. Smoking is permitted.
I am shepherd to 620 South Country cheviot ewes and live with husband David who looks after 50 Cows and their Aberdeen Angus calves at Girnwood a 600acre hill farm in the heart of the Scottish Borders. My other loves are my horses and my vegetable garden.
