  • My boyfriend and I had a great time staying at Sue & Bob's cozy studio. The place is darling - no detail has been overlooked, making the whole week we stayed there quite comfortable. The studio has a full kitchen and even a washer/dryer. Sue and Bob were wonderful and friendly hosts, and we look forward to staying at their place again!

  • Sue Carter-Low missed her true calling - she should have been a historic preservationist or interior decorator. Her house is unique, historic and exquisitely renovated and remodeled, as is the "Cottage Garden Apartment" in which my husband and I stayed. Sue's attention to detail and thoughtfulness in regards the comfort of her guests was evident everywhere, and she clearly has an elevated aesthetic sense that makes a stay in her home a complete delight. We loved the small kitchen with authentic, retro fixtures and equipped with every possible tool or utensil one might ever need. Brick stairs lead outside to a private bricked courtyard, (not usable by us in November, sadly, so best appreciated in the summer months!). The kitchen floor is tile and the bedroom is warmly carpeted. Antiques and clever, thematic decorating touches abound. The apartment is part of the house's basement, but is spacious with deep, leaded windows and there is no oppressive, claustrophobic basement feel. In summer months, it would be even better, especially with the use of the courtyard.
The Laurelhurst neighborhood is a quiet, historic residential development in Portland from the 1920s, with curving streets and diverse historic homes, wonderfully situated and close to many amenities, including a terrific microbrewery (Coalition Brewing at 27th and SE Ankeny).
Our hosts, Sue and her husband Bob, are warm and conversational without being intrusive and very generously allowed us to view the interior of their beautiful home, decorated in full holiday splendor.
As an art historian with an interest in Oregon historic architecture, our decision to stay in Sue and Bob's English Cottage apartment was inspired.

  • The cottage was perfect for our stay in Portland. All of the decorations were so neat and it had all the amenities you could ask for. Bob and Sue were beyond gracious and helpful during our visit and we can't wait to come back and stay again! Thank you!

  • Such a well-appointed and cozy basement apartment! Wish we'd had more time to explore the neighborhood but it was a perfect spot for us while visiting John's daughter. We wish we'd had more time to just curl up with our books on one of our rainy afternoons! Thanks, Sue and Bob, for a lovely stay.

  • A charming little apartment with all the necessaries. The accommodations
were perfect for my five-day stay. The kitchen, albeit small, allowed four of us to tuck around the table for the occasional breakfast or informal pizza gathering. Bob and Sue are ideal hosts. They are lively and well informed about the history and high points of the area. They went well beyond the call of duty to ensure my every need was met.

  • The Garden Apartment is a lovely basement apartment with many special touches such as plush towels, down comforter, period kitchen decor, fresh fruit, coffee and tea, instant oatmeal, popcorn, etc. to make your stay very comfortable. The home is located in the Laurelhurst area of Portland with good streets for walking and a lovely neighborhood. It is easy to reach any area of Portland with highway 84 close by. Sue and Bob are welcoming hosts and enjoy interacting with guests. Our only problem was the furnace coming on at night which we were not used to in our own home.

  • We only stayed one night, but this place was great! Bob and Sue were wonderful, and the area was beautiful. Everything about it was awesome, and we will be coming back again.

About
We live in a historic home in Laurelhurst, in Portland. Sue is a retired principal and Bob retired from the big aerospace company in Seattle (Boeing). Sue has a passion for decorating and gardening (is very creative and good at both), Bob is into art and also enjoys and appreciates creating and living in a tasteful environment. We both enjoy entertaining, hosting frequent social gatherings in our home in our English garden or just having friends over for a "glass" of wine. We also have a house on the Oregon Coast that we love and enjoy sharing with family and friends and that is also available for short term rental. We stay constantly busy with our "projects" spending time with the grandchildren, try to fit some time in for a little golf and getting away for a few days from time to time. Now that we have joined "airbnb" we might just find an excuse to getaway a little more. As hosts we would be happy to invite our guests for a tour of our historic home, sit with us and enjoy a glass of wine in front of the inglenook fireplace or on the patio in the garden. If our guests prefer to left alone we are sensitive to that as well. Our goal is to provide a welcoming, comfortable, and tasteful environment for our guests, and possibly develop new friendships. As guests we appreciate friendly, but sensitive to our privacy, hosts that provides a clean, comfortable environment that makes us feel at home. We also appreciate hosts that provide recommendations and insight into places to visit and things to do. As to a life motto we both think that, Live, Love, Laugh and Learn is how we approach life.
