Papaya Farms Road is great for morning exercise! Off the grid and non-GMO farming community. There is an organic farm across the road with local produce for sale. Steve and Janelle own and run Hawiian Retreat, and will be your hosts. <3Sign from the road on Papaya Farms Road. It's the first right on the road. If you come at night, there are solar lights all around the sign and on two palm trees to guide you in.

My house is a mile from the ocean and close to many exotic sights and sounds of the Big Island, especially birds! The area is amazing! Fall asleep to jungle rain, coqui frogs, and night birds. Take a trip to Volcano National Park which you will never forget. Down the road 2.5 miles is my favorite spot, Ahalanui County Beach Park. Continuously warm volcano heated waters fed by the fresh ocean waves. One of MANY warm swim spots and stargazing like you've never seen before. YOU WILL LOVE IT!

The space

Are you thinking of of living, "Off the grid" or providing for your own electricity and water? Before you make the leap, come and experience this unique lifestyle first hand. The electricity for lights, fans and water pump come from several solar panels and batteries that store the energy. The water is from a rain catch system on the roof. The water is filtered but I recommend bottled water or boiling your own. There are propane tanks that run the stove, refrigerator, and hot water heater. There are two solar powered vents on the roof that pull hot air out of the house. The house has several solar motion detecting solar lights throughout. This unique 650 sq. foot 12-sided house was a church, a yoga studio, and a healing center in past lives. It is now a home and has a shaded 6 ft. round skylight in the center of the ceiling and mirrors for yoga and dance. Note: I recently covered the skylight with a tapestry to make the house cooler and less sunny. It also has an indoor toilet and sink with an amazing outdoor shower, both with hot and cold running water. You will find very comfortable queen and full sized beds in the house with plenty of living space. We have just added a kitchen onto the hale called, "The Jungle Cafe". Here, there is a propane refrigerator and stove as well a 6ft. counter, double sink, and all the amenities of a kitchen.

Guest access

The house is very private and located on 3 acres of lush ancient mango trees with two buildings. Internet access is available across the road at, "Hawaiian Retreat" (also your hosts) which is a 5-acre organic garden selling fresh produce. I can get a little cell/phone Internet service from the bed, kitchen, and bathroom.

Interaction with guests

The house is very private and managed by "Hawaiian Retreat", across the road. Janelle is available to answer any questions you may have. A gardener visits once a month.

Other things to note

Don't forget to take some inexpensive water shoes for the warm ponds, along with your snorkeling gear. Waking shoes that can handle black lava as many places you visit will be a bit rough. I also pack water shoes for swimming as often the bottom is solidified lava.
Take your own spices for cooking.
A flashlight is a must if you go outside at night. There is electricity in the house with lights.
This is a wonderful location and there aren't any big hotels in the area.
Please call with your ETA. We try to keep check-ins no later than 6:00pm. My hosts need their sleep. Mahalo. We know you are coming from far away so if you have to check in later, we can accommodate you. Just let us know. Janelle can be reached at ((PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) for anything you need. This is an adventure cabin. It is for the nature lover who is looking for a unique and comfortable Hawaiian experience. If you need room service, a swimming pool, wall to wall carpeting, street lights, and the company of many tourists; it may not be for you.

What a wonderful experience! The nightly jungle chorus; the walks around the property; the lava fields; the safe snorkeling beaches. The yurt was larger that I expected and the rain ponchos were a useful addition, given that the area is rainforest. Thank you Jenny for the use of your house.

Beautiful place to stay! The location is perfect if you're up for a relaxing time with snorkeling, volcanoes and beautiful hikes close at hand.

My husband and I spent our honeymoon here two years ago! We loved it so much, we have decided to make our visit to the Jenny's hale a tradition. Our stay was as magical as the first time around although some things have changed. The kitchen is now a part of the dodecahedron, which means the overall number of mosquito bites dropped significantly! There also seemed to be less coqui frogs this year which made for quieter nights. We find their chirping and the other jungle sounds (including the rain) beautiful and a part of an experience that you can't find many other places. The secluded outdoor shower is a thrill, and the closest town, Pahoa, is charming, and colorful. Round the corner from the hale, and you're practically on The Red Road, the scenic coastline drive along which you'll find a volcanically heated pond, a black sand beach, big waves crashing onto steep sea cliffs, and a local (or two) selling fresh young coconuts. This place is not to be missed!

Booked for 5 nights, but left soon after arriving here. This place is a clearing surrounded by dense forest. This place is truly off the grid which means no internet, no gps. If you like remote places, do write down all driving directions! Have a map handy. Lots of mosquitoes...bug spray didn't work...wear long pants and long sleeve shirts. Place is not very clean. I couldn't reach the host, so that was pretty concerning as the area is very remote and I didn't know where to buy groceries, gas, etc. I didn't see many travelers on the way to here. Roads are paved, but pretty remote, no street lights. Have a flash light, emergency kit handy in the car. Fortunately, I had saved driving directions to retrace back to Hilo and book another hotel there. Received refund for 2 nights.

Response from Jenny:
Vasavi, the directions are all on Airbnb. No else in three years has had your problems. My description specifically states that it is off the grid, on an off the grid road in an ancient jungle. I also shared where the nearest town and stores are, as well as the wifi across the road at your host’s house. My maid does a fantastic job. You called but left no message for us to help you. Stick with tour groups and hotels. And next time you book, read the description, not just the low cost. Adventuring is not for you.

Jenny accommodated us right from the get-go. She was easily accessible prior to our trip and provided all the details as well as many recommendations for the area. The neighborhood is quiet and friendly but definitely off the beaten path. The Whale House is a true gem if your idea of a good vacation is sleeping in a cottage in the jungle. We loved it, including the outdoor shower (which my 7 year old daughter was very skeptical about).
