My house is a mile from the ocean and close to many exotic sights and sounds of the Big Island, especially birds! The area is amazing! Fall asleep to jungle rain, coqui frogs, and night birds. Take a trip to Volcano National Park which you will never forget. Down the road 2.5 miles is my favorite spot, Ahalanui County Beach Park. Continuously warm volcano heated waters fed by the fresh ocean waves. One of MANY warm swim spots and stargazing like you've never seen before. YOU WILL LOVE IT!
Are you thinking of of living, "Off the grid" or providing for your own electricity and water? Before you make the leap, come and experience this unique lifestyle first hand. The electricity for lights, fans and water pump come from several solar panels and batteries that store the energy. The water is from a rain catch system on the roof. The water is filtered but I recommend bottled water or boiling your own. There are propane tanks that run the stove, refrigerator, and hot water heater. There are two solar powered vents on the roof that pull hot air out of the house. The house has several solar motion detecting solar lights throughout. This unique 650 sq. foot 12-sided house was a church, a yoga studio, and a healing center in past lives. It is now a home and has a shaded 6 ft. round skylight in the center of the ceiling and mirrors for yoga and dance. Note: I recently covered the skylight with a tapestry to make the house cooler and less sunny. It also has an indoor toilet and sink with an amazing outdoor shower, both with hot and cold running water. You will find very comfortable queen and full sized beds in the house with plenty of living space. We have just added a kitchen onto the hale called, "The Jungle Cafe". Here, there is a propane refrigerator and stove as well a 6ft. counter, double sink, and all the amenities of a kitchen.
The house is very private and located on 3 acres of lush ancient mango trees with two buildings. Internet access is available across the road at, "Hawaiian Retreat" (also your hosts) which is a 5-acre organic garden selling fresh produce. I can get a little cell/phone Internet service from the bed, kitchen, and bathroom.
Interaction with guests
The house is very private and managed by "Hawaiian Retreat", across the road. Janelle is available to answer any questions you may have. A gardener visits once a month.
Other things to note
Don't forget to take some inexpensive water shoes for the warm ponds, along with your snorkeling gear. Waking shoes that can handle black lava as many places you visit will be a bit rough. I also pack water shoes for swimming as often the bottom is solidified lava.
Take your own spices for cooking.
A flashlight is a must if you go outside at night. There is electricity in the house with lights.
This is a wonderful location and there aren't any big hotels in the area.
Please call with your ETA. We try to keep check-ins no later than 6:00pm. My hosts need their sleep. Mahalo. We know you are coming from far away so if you have to check in later, we can accommodate you. Just let us know. Janelle can be reached at ((PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) for anything you need. This is an adventure cabin. It is for the nature lover who is looking for a unique and comfortable Hawaiian experience. If you need room service, a swimming pool, wall to wall carpeting, street lights, and the company of many tourists; it may not be for you.
Hale Pohola is a pet-friendly house, as long as the pets are friendly :) Smoking is OK outside the house. Please enjoy this very unique environment to the fullest, but treat her with respect and care.
