The neighbourhood

Quiet, calm and serene. Close to shops, super markets and a good children hospital. There are some traditional nyama choma places around and also good restaurants. Nearest shopping centre is Valley Arcade which has a Java coffee house, a number of restaurants and bars. There is a good walking and jogging trail leading to Jeffrey's sports club.

Getting around

Very good public transport to the town center. Also, reliable taxi drivers.

Mary did everything possible to be sure our access to the apartment was easy when we arrived and the apartment is clean, safe, pretty and very big. We felt at home, immediately. The neighborhood is an oasis in busy Nairobi, but still centrally located.

The space itself was nice, but I found communication with the hosts to be really frustrating. There were at least 5 separate instances when someone said they would come at a specific time, only to never show up or say they were not coming. This first happened when we arrived and the key was supposed to be left at the gate but wasn't. Finally it showed up about an hour later. We then went upstairs and noticed that several light bulbs were burnt or or missing, so that multiple rooms were completely dark. We called Matthew the caretaker right away around 5 pm and he said he was coming "now." By 7 he still hasn't come so I called back and he said he was on his way, but I never heard back from him that night and he did not bring the lightbulbs. The cleaner came the next morning at 7 am with them. The second time this happened was when the master bathroom started leaking. It took about 3 days to schedule the plumber to come to the place and he was supposed to come at 9, and came at 11 to take a look at the problem. I told him I had somewhere to be at 2, and he said he would be "right back." By 3 he still hasn't come so I left and got a call from Carol that he would come at 4:30. He finally came around 6:30 and made a repair but the problem continued and the floor was covered in water the next morning. Again he was supposed to come and never showed up or called to say he wasn't coming. The last instance of this was when I was leaving for the airport and Matthew was supposed to come at 4 and get the key. I never heard anything from him and finally left at 5, and just left the key with the guard. This was the third time that Matthew had done this- said he was going to come and never came- I never actually met Matthew as a result of this. Because we were in Nairobi to do work, this was very disruptive and I lost many hours from waiting around for people to show up. Carol was very polite and responsive but it should not have been left to me to deal with irresponsible people so many times. On top of this, we also found it frustrating that the place was missing basic amenities, such as trash bags, toilet paper, and dish soap. This should not have been our responsibility to purchase. And there was only one set of keys, which made it hard for myself and my research partner to get our work done. In general this place has a lot of potential but they need to invest more in setting up a better system for Airbnb rentals.

Dear Maggie, Many thanks for your feedback. My sincere apologies for the inconveniences you went through. As I mentioned to you, I am based in South Africa but I have put in place a system that works, from check-in to check-out. I am not sure what happened this time round. Also, I am usually in touch with the guests as their check in or check out, either by email or Whats-up. Carol, my sister in law is also assists. Sometimes, we even give the house keys a day before or we arrange for airport pick up for ease of check in. I did try to communicate with you regarding your check in time and also contacted you once you checked in. I did not detect any problem and also Carol tells me that she did not hear from you on this. We would have been happy to help you immediately had you indicated that there was a problem. When you booked, I sent to you the User Manual for the apartment which I requested you to familiarize with as it had all the information on the apartment. However, you indicated in an email exchange that you have not read it when you asked me about the garbage bags. My assumption is that you would refer to it. The master bedroom started leaking during your stay and we tried to get the plumber to come. My apologies for the plumber not coming on time as promised. Regarding soap dishes, kindly note that they were there. I came to the house two days after you left and found them intact. Trash bags, toilet paper and soap dish are part of the basic household items and we had them. For Matthew, I do not understand what could have happened. He told me that he was waiting for you downstairs and he saw you giving the keys to the guard which he took. As mentioned, the apartment is a family home equipped with all the basics. Previous clients were happy with the services and also the value for money. Lastly, I find it very unfair that you encountered many problems but you did not raise any of them with me but waited to write a nasty review. Having said that, my sincere apologies for any of the inconveniences. I will be happy to host you again once you are in Nairobi.

Mary's apartment I could easily call my home in Nairobi. Big and clean apartment very family friendly. The price is great value. Location perfect. Apartment is located in a secure compound in wonderful suburb of Kileleshwa. Mary was a great and flexible host though at the time of my stay she worked abroad. Everything was arranged and worked perfect. I hope the apartment is available next time I visit Kenya.
