Where you’ll be

Hamburg, EC, South Africa

To Do In Hamburg
Keiskamma Art Project:
The famous art project has multiple studios spread out in the village, where local artists make beautiful embroidered tapestries, pottery and felt pieces. A visit to Hamburg is not complete without visiting their store and having tea in the studio overlooking the Keiskamma river. The store and café is located down an embankment, opposite the spaza shop, near the entrance to the village.

Spaza Stop
You can find tinned goods, delicious, fresh vetkoek, and some essential toiletries at the local spaza, located just off the main road, close to the entrance of the village.

Snow Goose Liquor Store:
The liquor store is in the village on the main road, next door to the town hall. It has a wide range of drinks to choose from.

Doregos Pub:
Doregos is the local riverside beach bar, where you can get a cold beer and a peri-peri chicken after a game of pool (and possibly sing some karaoke if you lucky). The pub is located in the caravan park, down the dirt road past the wooden jetty. There is a Coca-Cola sign directing you off the main road.

Mussel Ladies:
Hamburg is lush with seafood that is often delivered right to your doorstep! If the mussel ladies have collected mussels or cockles they sell them door to door, and offer to clean them for an extra fee.

Hamburg Beach:
The local beach, which is a short walk straight down the hill from the house, boasts wide sandy beaches for walking and great surfing opportunities. It is a nice short walk to the Keiskamma river mouth, to the left of the beach (if facing the sea) and a little further around the river mouth will get you to Doregos Pub.

Umtana Lagoon:
If you are looking for a longer walk, we recommend walking to Umtana Lagoon from Hamburg beach. It is a +-45 minute walk, each way, along unspoilt beaches and dunes. From Hamburg beach, turn right (if facing the sea) until you get to the lagoon. You can also walk back on the rough 4x4 road above the beach. This is a bit tricker to find, as it meanders and turns a bit. It takes about an hour to walk back to the Jewel Box along the edge of the Hamburg beach reserve alongside livestock and rural homes.

Canoeing on the Keiskamma:
You can rent canoe’s from the Hamburg Backpackers, just next door to the house. Mandy and Alan, who run the backpackers, will be delighted to help you out!
