This listing is for a private, lower-level, studio apartment. It has its own entrance, living area, kitchenette (hot plate, microwave, kettle, fridge, sink) and bathroom. There is a full-sized bed, sofa and wardrobe. Please note there is no TV. It is spacious, at around 650 sq ft, newly renovated and furnished with unique and hand-built features. The apartment is located in Woodbridge, a residential, quiet and safe neighborhood, about 1.5 miles from Downtown/Midtown.

The space
The apartment is in a converted turn-of-the-century brick building. We completed a top-to-toe renovation, so its a modern and luxurious conversion (think of heated tile floors in winter!). We live on the first floor level, and the AirBnB space occupies the whole lower level. Our neighbors are incredibly friendly, and they'll quite often be found around the fire pit in our shared backyard.

While the studio is entirely separate from our apartment upstairs (sharing only a utility and laundry area), we do share walls and ceilings. You *can* hear life from upstairs -- and we can hear you. We are very mindful of noise travelling to your unit, and we also ask our AirBnB guests to be considerate of noise traveling upstairs. If you plan on late night loud conversations or music, this isn't the space for you. Similarly, if you are sensitive to noise and hearing sounds from above will impact your enjoyment of our space (and your ability to review us fairly), we urge you book elsewhere.

We have been hosting on AirBnB for 11 years, and have over a hundred 5* reviews. We were rated the best AirBnB listing in Detroit in the Metro Times in June 2015. If you'd like an AirBnB experience in which the host really knows what they are doing, you're in the right place! Please feel free to email with any questions. We look forward to hosting you in our home. Thanks!

Guest access
We provide all linens and towels, and bathroom supplies. There is a kitchenette in the studio that is equipped with the utensils you need to make simple meals. Guests are welcome to help themselves to any cooking items they find in the kitchen. We make sure its kept stocked with tea, coffee, olive oil and basic spices. There is a shared backyard and laundry facilities (free). There is no TV, so please bring a laptop if you want to use the wifi to access your streaming services. The studio is designed to accommodate two guests comfortably. If the two guests don't wish to share the full-sized bed, we have an air-mattress, and some extra bedding which can be used to create a separate sleeping space (we charge a small surcharge for this).

Other things to note
This studio is located in the basement of our apartment, which is in a 110 year old building. Old buildings creak and noise travels. As mentioned above, you *can* hear it when people move around upstairs, and loud voices or music are audible in the studio. We keep pretty normal waking hours, so the house is usually quiet 11pm-7am. Please remember that sound travels both ways - you can hear us and we can hear you. Since anything above normal conversation level is very audible to anyone upstairs, we only accept reservations from guests who can assure us they will be respectful of our living environment.

We’re emphasizing this aspect of our space because its more than normal apartment to apartment sound travel, so, if you think this will impact your enjoyment of your stay, please don't book this space!

Neighbourhood highlights

Woodbridge is one of Detroit's most vibrant, safe and stable neighborhoods. Full of tree-lined streets with turn-of-the-century houses, it is beautiful and welcoming. Woodbridge has a weird and wonderful collection of inhabitants, many of whom share a great passion about the neighborhood, and city as a whole. There is a fantastic sense of community here - like none other I've ever experienced. Porch life is one of the best things about the neighborhood.

Woodbridge isn’t in Midtown or Downtown - it is located just to the west of Wayne State campus, about one and two miles from Midtown/Downtown respectively. It is conveniently located minutes from all freeways, and 20 minutes from DTW international airport. There is ample street parking around the house.

Woodbridge is primarily residential, but it takes only about 10 minutes on a scenic wander along the length of the neighborhood to the local pub or bar (The Woodbridge Pub/Lexington), pizza shop or sushi place (PieSci/Bash) or coffee shops (Roost/Bikes and Coffee) for a tasty bite to eat, and new things are springing up all the time on Trumbull Ave. It’s about 15 minutes from our place on foot to Midtown (which has all manner of shops and restaurants), and a longer walk, short drive or bike ride Downtown to more bars and restaurants, the stadiums, riverfront and Eastern Market. We have local maps and guide books available in the apartment for you to use.

I am a 40 year old research psychologist and university lecturer; originally from London, but living in the US for the last twelve years. I started using AirBnB to travel in 2011, and was convinced by my host on a trip to Hawaii to list my guest room in Detroit...and have been hosting ever since! My husband (Chris) and I renovated a home in Detroit seven years ago. We have a guest suite in the basement of our apartment that we list on AirBnB. We enjoy meeting guests from around the world and spreading the word that Detroit is a fantastic place to live; we think our little corner of the city showcases it pretty well! I also act as listing admin for my Mum's place in London. She isn't online enough to be a responsive host, so I run the show for her with respect to bookings/inquiries etc. She has a beautiful flat in Central London that she uses only for work during the week. Its free most weekends and for the whole of the summer. Its really a fantastic place from which to explore London. So, please book away - we look forward to welcoming you into our home in Detroit, or corresponding our way with you to a smooth check-in in London! Happy travels, Sophie
