This might just look like you may be staying in a bonafide castle; and indeed it is. A 600 year old castle but with a new kitchen and ensuite of course. Thenissey is about a 40 minute drive from Dijon and the property is a very green, quiet area that just so happens to be a 18th century palace. The castle is opposite the palace inside the moat. Yes there is a moat. Yes, I meant to say palace. Jacques is a very friendly and accommodating host. He helped us immensely on our stay and his dog, Gabon, is also very friendly and got on well with our own dog, I don't wish to spoil it any further; but to finish; our only disappointment was no ghostly encounter :)

The stay was amazing. The castle is very well maintained with all of the conveniences you'd expect of a modern home. The village is rural so it is very much an escape from everyday life. Jacque is welcoming and a very kind man, and the very friendly dog is great. Some great things are the door key which is like something from Zelda, the 15th century castle vibe, the reliable internet, the acoustics. A couple of times a day you might hear the TGV in the distance otherwise it is impressively quiet.

This was one big surpise. A beautiful old castle with walls 1.5 m thick keeping the inside cool. Beautifull master bedroom, living room. The hospitality of Jacques was far beyond of what can be expected of a host. The complete package of the castle, the gardens, the environment and the host with his dog makes you want to return one day. Highly recommended.

We had an amazing time in Thenissey! We arrived in the afternoon and found Gabon (the previously-mentioned castle dog) waiting for us on the steps of the chateau. Jacques met us and showed us around the old castle, which was well-equipped, spacious, and beautiful. He also showed us how to use the wood-fired stoves to keep the place warm—November can be frosty out here! During our stay, we spent our time admiring the scenery in Thenissey, cooking, and lounging around near the fire. It was a fabulous experience and we were sad to leave. One thing not previously mentioned: this area is remote, but if you get here by car, there's a large grocery store, butcher shop, and several restaurants within a 15 minute drive.

We arrived late at night. The Chateau was hard to find for us in the dark, but Jacques waited patiently and welcomed us on his courtyard. The wood stove in the living and in the master bedroom were lit up when we arrived. It was a lovely and warm welcome. In daylight it only got better. The area surrounding the chateau is beautiful, especially when we were there, in the fall. With the leaves of the trees in all sorts of colors in the sunlight of the last warm days of the year. The castles themselves are also enchanting. The old castle, where we stayed, is old in all the pleasant ways, but is equipped with a modern kitchen and bathroom. In the area we hiked, we've visited a cheese farm and we've had a delicious dinner at a restaurant in a town nearby. Our four-legged companion quickly made friends with the castle dog and has never felt home so quickly. It was a long trip for a short stay, but absolutely worth the drive from Netherlands. If you ever want to stay here it may be comforting to know that the owner also speaks English.

This place is really special: you can feel in the middle age but with all comfort you would expect. The living room has a special athmosphere especially when you start up the fireplace. (by the way, fireplaces work better than electric heating) So don't miss it! Jacques was really kind and open for discussion. He presented us the history of the castle and also the main castle. So we keep the Château de Thenissey in the list of the "must revisit" section of our agenda and next time, hopefully, we can have an off-road ride with Jacques. We really liked the castle's key, a really heavy 20cm key. Definitely you are aware that it's in your pocket.
